granted 60 trees from the
Department of Natural
Resources. They spent 3
days planning and staking out the area where the trees
would go within the school
grounds. The leaders of
this project, Callie and
Dalton Brown, thought it
would be best to have the
elementary students par-
ticipant any way possible.
These students were able
to learn how to properly
plant a tree, get to know FFA members and what
they do in the FFA, and
spend a nice day out doors.
Callie Brown states, “This
was a great project for our
school, with a wonderful
learning experience for
everyone involved because
everyone learned how to
plant trees properly and
This year the Twin Cedars
FFA Chapter is getting the
elementary students in-
volved with their FFA pro-grams. On Thursday Sep-
tember 22, the FFA chap-
ter and their elementary
spent the day planting trees
throughout their school.
The students dug holes,
planted the trees, and wa-
tered them. They were
help the environment. We
taught the younger stu-
dents about the many dif-
ferent types of trees granted to us, how to plant
them, and properly care for
them. I was very happy to
hear we got the grant. Get-
ting that opportunity to
work young children, Ogle
Nursery, the providers of
the trees, and the Iowa
DNR was a blast.” Dalton
Brown adds that he and his
sister started the project to improve the looks of their
school and that they were
both very interested in tree
identification. Overall, it
was a great learning ex-
perience and a wonderful
way to introduce younger
members to the FFA.

This year the 25th annual
World Food Prize was held
in Des Moines on October
13th. through the 15th. The
World Food Prize Institute,
founded by Dr. Norman
Borlaug, works to stop hun-
ger around the world. There
were over 120 students rep-
resenting 24 states.
Students who participated
were required to write a four
to five page essay about one
country and an agriculture
factor ranging from econom-
ics to land management.
While there students listened
to speeches from various
ambassadors and agricul-
tural leaders including the
former president of Ghana,
the former president of Bra-
zil, and the Secretary of
Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
Students were able to join
the fight against hunger by
spending part of their day
packaging meals through an
organization called Out-
reach. These meals will be
given to family’s in the
United States.
Students also received the
chance to talk one on one
with a ambassadors, college
professors, and other spe-
cialists in the field of agri-
culture. After presenting
their essays in a short speech
to experts, students now
have the chance to apply for
the Borlaug-Ruan Internship
which involves traveling to
one of eighteen countries
and participating in a re-
search project for two
months of the summer.

Chapter members walked

the cause.

Graceland students also
explained various lab ex-
periments to the high
school students. At the test
plot, students were able to
examine soy bean plants to
calculate bushels per acre.
After being divided, stu-
dents were asked to per-
form various team tasks
with increased efficiency.
To accomplish these tasks,
students worked together to
find innovative ideas. Stu-
dents were even treated to
a delicious all-you-can-eat
lunch, of which many took
full advantage.
On Thursday, October
27th, high school students
had the opportunity to visit
and tour the new Agricul-
ture Business program at
Graceland University.
Through grant money,
Graceland was able to pro-
vide funds to the FFA
Chapters in attendance in
order to help make the trip
possible. Schools in atten-
dance included Bedford,
Centerville, Central Deca-
tur, Mount Ayr, and Win-
terset.
While there, students par-
ticipated in leadership
workshops, explored lab
experiments, evaluated soy
bean test plots, and did
team building tasks.
