INTRODUCTION

Welcome to yet another book on ‘how to play the harmonica’.

This time we are concentrating on the wonderful Mr Sonnyboy Williamson the second - alsoknown as Alex Rice Miller.

What we’ve done here is to explore the style of Sonnyboy’s playing and create a series of riffsbased on the way he played. They are not exact replicas and they are not from specific songsbut you will recognise the similarity as you listen to Sonnyboy himself.

To give you the feel, style, and sense of these riffs Paul has written and played guitar parts togive you a more contemporary setting.

We are continually indebted to Joe Filisko for his encouragement, mentoring and his insightsinto Sonnyboy’s playing and also the low C harmonica I’m playing on this recording; includinghis secret modification to allow me to play it in my mouth without using hands! If you don’thave a low C you can play these riffs on a normal C - but do yourself a favour and get the lowC. You’ll thank yourself. TECHNIQUES & ARTICULATION

Sonnyboy’s default single note playing is an unusual form of tongue blocking; he starts withthe tongue covering the comb - say on holes 1 to 4. Them he pulls the tongue back so youhear all the notes in a chord. Finally he moves the tongue to the left and plants it down onholes 1 to 3 and what you hear is hole 4. Have a go at it, I think it sounds great!

He uses tongue blocking all the time as far as I can tell except when playing chords. On thelower holes he switches the tongue to the right. I don’t think he puckers at all - what do youthink?

His chords are superb. All the tone and texture he gets into them add to the rhythm and Ithink they sound crisp, deep, fruity and fuzzy all at the same time.

His chord technique is based on something we explore in great length in our first book ‘GetChugging’. The trick is to whisper crazy words loudly into the harmonica to produce the textureand rhythms. Do you remember ‘I would like a chicken tikka’ from ‘Get Chugging’? A classicfor you to check out.

So Sonnyboy uses the words written with the riffs to articulate the sound and get the texturalnuances. I’m sure he didn’t think of it in these terms - he didn’t like fattening frogs for snakes- but we feel it is the best way to show you what he’s actually doing. Phrases like ‘doodleoodle oodle dah’ sound great when you whisper them into holes 1, 2 and 3 on your trusty tinsandwich.

Also his throat vibrato is unusual. It’s very fast, like his singing vibrato. It’s done deep in thethroat and I demonstrate it for you on the recording.

Another vibrato is using his right hand. He holds the harp in the left hand and flaps his righthand open and closed to create it. I’ll demonstrate it on the recording and you’ll hear it whenyou listen to Sonnyboy.
