Metcal Fume Extraction products are designed to effectively remove and filter fumes found within the electronics industry.Many operators suffer from symptoms such as runny nose, irritated eyes, sore throats, and occupational asthma. Thesesymptoms can lead to high absenteeism, reduced production throughput and quality, and high staff turnover.

■ Particulate Filters: Smoke particles can be removed with a particulate filter. All particulate filters are graded under a Eurovent Standard (EU), which relates filtration efficiency to particle size. The higher the EU number, the greater the efficiency of the filter.

■ Chemical/Gas Filters: Gases and vapors must be absorbed by chemical filters, which are usually carbon based. Metcal Fume Extraction chemical filters will filter a wide range of chemicals and solvents found within the electronics industry. To understand the filtration efficiency needs of your chemicals and solvents, please provide an MSDS safety sheet to your Metcal representative for review.

Monitoring easeMetcal has developed a revolutionary and unique approach to protecting workers fromhazardous fumes. Two filter monitoring options are available on all products: a DigitalMicroprocessor Panel or an Analog Gauge. If you choose digital control, a user-friendlymicroprocessor control panel manages the system. The touch-sensitive backlit digital displaymakes it easy to monitor filter life, gas/particulate conditions, motor temperature, and

running/service time. Auto diagnostics give audible and visual prompts that warn the operator of impending servicerequirements. With the analog gauge, you get a cost-effective indication of the system's performance.

In many production and rework operations, from hand soldering to using solder pots, adhesives and sealants,airborne particulates are produced that research has shown to be a serious health hazard. Most solders contain fluxes(rosin and synthetic) that, when heated, give off dangerous fumes and gases.

Colophony causes the following fumes to be created

Colophony contains many harmful constituents, from acetone to carbon monoxideto irritating smoke (see diagram). Research lists colophony fumes as one of the sixmost common causes of occupational asthma. Think you’re safe by using non-rosin fluxes? Think again. Synthetic fluxes have been found to be even moreirritating than rosin fluxes and present an even higher potential danger in theelectronics workplace. Even the use of non-rosin based fluxes such as synthetic orno-cleans can lead to serious irritation to the lungs. FACT: Colophony inhalation canlead to occupational asthma.

Metcal offers a wide range of solutions for extraction and filtration of fumes. Selection of the correct method is dependent uponthe application as well as operator preference. In some cases, it may be necessary to use a mix of fume extraction methods.

Bench TopThe BVX-100 Fume Extraction System is Metcal’s new bench top fume extraction unit thatoperates as a plenum or easily converts into an arm system. This unit is the perfect partner forany soldering iron or rework system.

Volume ExtractionProcesses such as heavy soldering, solder pot tinning and adhesive application generate large volumesof fumes and require volume extraction. Arms and plenums are the best fume collection accessories for these tasks. Arms in diameters from 32mm to 75mm can be positioned tobe unobtrusive to the operator, yet provide effective fume capture distances.

High Pressure Tip ExtractionFor hand soldering, tip extraction is the most effective and economical solution. This method allowscontinuous removal of fumes from the soldering iron while in use or at rest. Unlike volume systems, high pressure systems can be installed with smaller ducting, over greater distances.

Cabinet ExtractionSelf-powered fume extraction cabinets offer the perfect solution for applications such as conformal coating, adhesives, mixing resins and solder pots. Fume cabinets capture and filter allfumes within an enclosed environment.

The analog gauge monitors the differential pressure across the filter assembly. As the filters block, the gauge will indicate this by a higher reading. For applications that require extraction over a large area, Bench Top Plenums are an

effective solution. Plenums are available in two sizes. Both include inlet grills to prevent

debris from being sucked into the filter unit, and are supplied with a flexible hose and

end cuffs for simple and quick connection to the high volume extraction system.

Arm extraction requires high volumes of air, but at much lower pressures. Therefore, arm extraction cannot be operated on

the same system as tip extraction. Arm extraction is very effective, however, correct nozzle positioning is critical for

optimum performance. The larger the diameter the larger the effective capture distance from the nozzle.

High Pressure Tip ExtractionThe TX Series of products are designed for tip extraction from soldering irons. This is a very economical and effective method

of fume removal ‘at the source’. A balance valve ensures correct flow rates at the extraction tube and a pressure relief valve

eliminates motor overheating. Depending on your application, a choice of filtration levels are available for each system.

Tip Extraction Kits

Although Metcal offers a full installation service, which is recommended where possible, kits are available for self-installation. All ductingis push-fit for easy reconfiguration. Each kit includes enough parts to fully install one bench position. To order the appropriate numberof kits, add up the number of bench positions required and order that total quantity of relevant kits. Although kit contents are generous,additional ducting may be required to cover long runs between benches.
