SOLAR POWER– Basic Components
1. Modules – solar electric collectors. 3 basic types in the marketplace: Mono crystalline, poly crystalline, thin film
2. Array – modules connected together into a system
3. Charge Controller – regulates the power going to the Inverter / batteries
4. Bi-Directional Inverter – converts the DC power produced by the CHARGE CONTROLLER to AC. Vise-a Versa it can convert AC power to DC for battery charging. Same Inverter can also EXPORT power to Grid.
5. Grid Tie Inverter – converts DC to AC and feeds the utility grid with the A/C power
6. Batteries – Stores DC power
SOLAR POWER– Basic Components
TYPES OF SOLAR POWER PLANTS
All PV systems consist of one or more modules which produce DC power. It is what is done with this power after it is produced that determines the type of system.
Stand Alone – Off gridModules, charge controller, batteries, and may or may not have an inverter which converts DC power to A/c power
Grid Tie – Grid connectedModules, and inverter connected to the power grid
Hybrid – Bi-directional Grid connected with batteries Modules, Hybrid inverter, and batteries for storage when the grid is unavailable
Systems can be installed on roofs, ground racks, pole mounts, or on racks which track the sun.
Stand Alone – System Components
Stand-alone PV systems are designed to operate independent of the electric utility grid, and are generally designed and sized to supply certain DC and/or AC electrical loads.
With an inverter to power AC loads Best suited for Remote Electrification requirement, with 1-2 days of Autonomy.
For systems with no battery the energy is used immediately like in water pump application. only works when it's sunny
Common applications are direct power to DC loads, water pumping and telecommunications.
Systems with Battery Backup can supply power 100% of the time: At night, on cloudy days and when the utility power is down/absent

back of or situated very close to a solar panel .• Rating typically below 500W
• STRING INVERTER
• String Level Inverter• Rating Typically 5KW-100KW for 3Ph
distribution• Used in roof top applications in KW scale
installation.
• CENTRAL INVERTER• Big Size Inverter with large arrays installation.• Rating Typically 250KW-800KW for 3Ph
distribution• Used for big Solar Parks in MW scale installation.
Grid Tie System is comparatively the simple but best suitable for the area where utility is reliable and well maintained
Grid-Connected systems can supply solar power to your Load and use utility power as a backup.
As long as there is enough electricity flowing in from your PV system, no electricity will flow in from the utility company.
If your system is generating more power than you are using, the excess will flow back into the grid, turning your meter backwards.

If utility power is reliable and well maintained in the area, and energy storage is not a priority, Grid tie system can work. But if the utility power goes down, even if there is solar, the PV system will be OFF for the safety of the utility workers.
Availability of SOLAR is dependent on Grid source and only in the day time.
Systems with Battery can supply power 100% of the time.

CNPS has supplied 75 solar Hybrid Solar PCU of 1-2KW rating at Dayal Bagh – Radhasaomi Satsang committee.• 75 households with rooftop solar power plants of 1-2kWp with 4-
6hrs backup • During surplus generation the electricity is fed into the other
houses of the colony through Grid and internal net metering system. Torrent Power (the primary power utility provider) has no business beyond bulk purchase.
• Advantage :Batteries have longer lives compared to the islanded mini-grid system. As the batteries are not discharging all the time the number of discharge cycles is lower as compared to the mini grid or individual home systems.
• Power demand in the evenings which reduces through the night to the next morning. The entire demand can be met by the battery bank with minimum load connected.
• Due to combination of grid and the solar, power plant can help the consumer in withstanding power cuts during sustain power cuts.
