1 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : SAMBALPUR 1. Location : Sambalpur district forms a part of North-West upland of Orissa. It lies between 83 o 49’ to 84 o 45’ East longitude and between 20 o 54’ to 22 o 11’ North latitude. It is bounded by the Sundargarh district in North, Sonepur and Angul district in South, Deogarh district in the East and Bargarh and Jharsuguda district in the West. 2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during March to September and cold during October to February The monsoon generally breaks during the month of 15 th June. Average annual rainfall of the district was 1672.5 m.m in 2011 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1495.7 m.m). 3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 6657 sq. kms and 10 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 4.28 percent of the states territory and shares 2.48 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 157 per sq. kms. as against 2.70 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1322 villages (including 84 un-inhabited villages) covering 9 blocks, 9 Tahasils and 3 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 191827 (18.4 %) and schedule tribe population 355261 (34.1 %) . The literacy percentage o the district covers 76.2 against 72.9 of the state. 4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 136thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 3353103 quintals, 1653 quintals wheat, 1308 quintals maize, 29 quintals ragi, 1211 quintals mung, 1077 quintals biri, 2637 quintals kulthi, 3587 quintals til, 779 quintals groundnuts, 3381 quintals mustard, 16227 quintals potatoes and 5270 quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Sambalpur district is about 33.95 thousand MT with a breakage of 18.02 thousand MT nitrogenous, 10.89 thousand MT phosphatic and 5.04 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 115 Kg. 5. Irrigation : By the end of 2010-11, it is reported by concerned department that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 62528 hectares and 26351 hectares respectively through all source of irrigation projects namely Hirakud (P) and Ib (P) irrigation projects in the district. 6. Education : There were 986 nos. of primary schools, 483 nos. of middle schools, 209 most of secondary schools and 43 nos. of general colleges in the district

SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : SAMBALPUR

1. Location : Sambalpur district forms a part of North-West upland of Orissa. It lies

between 83o 49’ to 84o 45’ East longitude and between 20o 54’ to 22o 11’ North

latitude. It is bounded by the Sundargarh district in North, Sonepur and Angul

district in South, Deogarh district in the East and Bargarh and Jharsuguda district

in the West.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity

during March to September and cold during October to February The monsoon

generally breaks during the month of 15th June. Average annual rainfall of the

district was 1672.5 m.m in 2011 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1495.7

m.m).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 6657 sq. kms and 10 lakhs of

population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 4.28 percent of the states

territory and shares 2.48 percent of the states population. The density of

population of the district is 157 per sq. kms. as against 2.70 person per sq.km of

the state. It has 1322 villages (including 84 un-inhabited villages) covering 9

blocks, 9 Tahasils and 3 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste

population is 191827 (18.4 %) and schedule tribe population 355261 (34.1 %) .

The literacy percentage o the district covers 76.2 against 72.9 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 136thousand

hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy

was 3353103 quintals, 1653 quintals wheat, 1308 quintals maize, 29 quintals ragi,

1211 quintals mung, 1077 quintals biri, 2637 quintals kulthi, 3587 quintals til, 779

quintals groundnuts, 3381 quintals mustard, 16227 quintals potatoes and 5270

quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Sambalpur district

is about 33.95 thousand MT with a breakage of 18.02 thousand MT nitrogenous,

10.89 thousand MT phosphatic and 5.04 thousand MT pottasic and the

consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 115 Kg.

5. Irrigation : By the end of 2010-11, it is reported by concerned department that

the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 62528 hectares and

26351 hectares respectively through all source of irrigation projects namely

Hirakud (P) and Ib (P) irrigation projects in the district.

6. Education : There were 986 nos. of primary schools, 483 nos. of middle schools,

209 most of secondary schools and 43 nos. of general colleges in the district

during 2010-11. Besides, there are 5 nos of engineering college in the district

during year 2010-11 to impart technical education.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt.,

Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 48 nos.

of the Allopathic medical institutions with 1337 beds facilities, 20 nos. of

Homoeopathic Hospitals and dispensaries and 10 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries

in the district during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 18 nos. of Hospitals and

dispensaries, 101 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Sambalpur

district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 106 nos. of small scale industries

have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 688.00 lakhs with 397

nos. of Employment generated in Sambalpur district. Besides various kinds of

handicraft works like stone Carving & other handicraft works, silk weaving have

been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Sambalpur district during the year 2010-

11 covers 307.619 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is

1611 which constitutes 94 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 6 nos. of tourist center such as Hirakud dam, Huma temple,

Samaleswari temple, Ghanteswari (Chipilima), Usakothi, and Deojharan identified

by department of Tourism and Culture, Orissa. During 2011, the numbers of

Domestic tourists were 848724 and foreign tourists were 348 who visited the

tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 205 Kms. of National Highways,

142 Kms. of state highways, 114 Kms. Major district roads, 150 kms of other

district roads, 7799 Kms, of Gram Panchayat roads and 752 Kms of forest roads

are operating in the district. Besides, 167.40 kms. of Railway lines with 3 nos. of

railway stations and 15 nos. of passenger halts are continuing in the district.

13. Banking : As on March 2011, there were 101 nos. of schedule commercial banks

having 8602 crores rupees deposit and 1324 Crores rupees credit in the district.
