On June 18, in response to Freedom o f Information

Act provisi ons and in an attempt to comply with the

requirements of an Executive Order, the Central

Intelligence Agency released over 70 0 pages of its

most closely held secrets, called

'T he Family Jewels' and pos ted them on its FOIA

Electronic Reading Roo mwebsite.

Despite the fears of many in the intelligence

comm unity, it is becom ing clear that the release o f

the files -- the contents of which are often of only

lukewarm interest now, as many as 50 years after

the events they describe -- will no t trigger the

agency's s elf-destruction. If anything, the files paint

a stark picture of the differences between then and

now, bringing into sharp relief the considerable

abuses (think extraordinary rendition) of which the

agency and its 'puppets' are ro utinely suspected of

being guilty to day.

Intelligence community obs erver James Bamford,

author ofBody of Secrets told National Public

Radio:

"They have a whole section on how the CIA

held a Russian defector in a jail that was

created by the CIA, a mini-prison for this

person...now, you have the CIA keeping

people in prisons all over the world"

Perhaps another reaso n that the CIA Family Jewels

didn't reveal fatal fault lines in the spy o rganizationis that the truth is mo re multi-faceted than 702

heavily censored pages can cover, due in no s mall

part to the agency's penchant for creating shell

companies, operating companies and agency-

friendly cut-outs in o rder to keep its o wn role in the

dirty work co vert.

The CIA has lo ng used both shell co mpanies (o r

dummy 'front' companies) and operating

companies (and there is a diffe rence ). Shell

companies are corporate entities in name o nly,

hollow false-fronts which own no real assets.

They're essentially an exercise in fraud designed to

keep the CIA's i nvolvement a secret from at least

cursory prying eyes. Operating companies, o n the

other hand, are actual entities owned and operated

by the agency. The most noto rious of these would

be Air America, the company who se fo rebear, Civil Air Transport was created by war hero

Claire Chennault of Flying Tigers fame, and which allegedly ended its days running drugs

in exchange for arms in s upport of various right-wing guerilla causes.

Another source of corpo rate cover is avai lable to the CIA in the form o f companies that are

privately (or even so metimes publicly) owned and directed by individuals sympathetic to the

agency's aims. One o f the mos t notorious examples wo uld be that of the late Howard

Hughes, whose Glomar Explorerdeep sea research vessel was o ne of the most thinly

disguised intelligence-gathering tools of all time. More recently, we have the instructive

example of former Senator Paul Laxalt (a close friend of Ro nald Reagan's), whose law firm

has been linked to aircraft used by the CIA to co nduct extraordinary renditions.

Is Social Net working the Killer App fo r Intel Gathe ring?

As this last example sho ws, shell co mpanies, false fro nts and

friendly corporate cover are no t techniques that the CIA stopped

doing back in the dark old days that serve as the subject matter of

the 'Family Jewels' document. In fact, today, they would appear to

be mo re multi-faceted (and even web-friendly) than ever. One o f

the mos t recent cases o f apparent CIA cover wo uld appear to bethe rather troubling po ssibility that the incredibly popular

Facebook so cial networking application is in fact a CIA

intelligence gathering too l. Part of this yet-to- be-proven

'internet rumour' is based on the a demons trated connection --

however tenuous -- between the Pentagon's abo rtive (yet creepy)

Information Awareness Office . Add in Facebook's venture

capital funding so urces having demo nstrated links to In-Q-Tel,

which is itself a CIA technolo gy incubator, and you have mo re than

If the Facebook iss ue were the only Web 2.0 link to crop up in the last couple o f months, it would be eno ugh -- particularly

when you think about what a massive wealth of data people are freely providing (and how easily it could be mis used by an

intelligence outfit with massive budgets). But out of the blue earlier this mo nth came the revelation that the o wner of the

influential Daily KOS website, Markos Mo ulitsas Zniga, is a fo rmer CIA emplo yee who wo uld have "no pro blem wo rking for

them" even to day.

The CIA's Secret Air Force...and More

Just as disturbing and lucrative are the persistent rumours that one o f the military's largest and mo st technologically savvy

integration contractors, Science Applicatio ns Internatio nal (SAIC) may have shadowy Central Intelligence Roo ts.

SAIC, co-prime contractor o n the U.S. Army's multi-bill ion do llar centrepiece modernization program, the Future Combat

System (FCS) has had numerous oversight issues, and has been noted for pos sess ing a virtual revolving doo rfor

CIA and Pentagon officials at its bo ard table. The 'in-j oke' co ncerning SAIC asks "what is SAIC spelled backward?" The joke

becomes less amusing when it is revealed that SAIC has been invol ved as a co ntractor certifying the inco rruptability of

Diebold vo ting machines, and is also the current owner of the company which manages internet domain names.

We touched briefly on extraordinary renditions earlier. This to pic is wo rth returning to, since this is where so me o f the mos t

egregious use o f CIA shell and operating companies is o ccurring, in an effort to hi de the true paymasters behind the

mass ive fleet of aircraft that even today are spiriting so-called terror suspects around the world, mos t often to jurisdi ctionswhere maximum physical 'persuas ion' can be applied free from the constraints impos ed by mos t 'Western' nations. One of

the oldest of the agency's operating airlines includes Caribe Airwhich was the focus o f some co nspiracy theories

examining the pilot training of the 9/11 hijackers, but more m odern examples (in addition to the Laxalt submis sio n, above)

include Keeler and Tate Management , LLC(shell com pany), and an motley asso rtment of aviation operating

companies including Premier Executive; Stevens Express Leasing; Devon Holding and Leasing; Bayard Foreign

Marketing; Aero Contractor; Crowell Aviation Technologies Inc; Path Co rporation; Rapid Air Trans Inc; Pegasus

Technolo gies; and Tepper Aviation.

Another CIA front company that bubbled to the surface recently was the firm o f Brewster-J ennings and Associates

which achieved notoriety in 200 3 as the emplo yer of covert CIA asset Valerie Plame. The leak that blew Plame's co ver

didn't just expose her, it also brought Brewster-Jennings' espionage usefulness to an end, as well.

Spies Without Borders

Another area said to be wel l explo ited by the CIA for its abi lity to explain the presence o f U.S. nationals in all co rners o f the

globe is that of charities and no n-go vernmental agencies. For m any years now i t has been all but accepted that USAID is

"the humanitarian arm o f the CIA". and Ame ricares has been s ingled out as well. Moving a little closer to the fringe, the

well-known relief organization World Visio n is als o a CIA front, "providing cover for the agency's experiments in m ind

control". These theories weave a tapestry in which John Lennon ass assin Jo hn Hinckley and would-be Reagan assassin

Fringe theories aside, it's clear that the CIA has not o nly a

long history of creating and exploiting lite rally hundreds of corpo rate entities, both real and imagined, for its o wn covert

ends. In fact, in many ways it might be cons idered to be one o f the agencies main co re competencies.

So much so, in fact, that the CIA funded a front company who se sole purpo se for existence was to s et up yet mo re

companies -- any or all o f whom co uld serve as incubators for further CIA cover. Called In-Q-Tel , the company wascreated as the agency's 'venture arm' in 200 0, and has s ince become so active that according to a 2005 Washingto n

Post article within five years it had "invested in more than 75 companies and delivered more than 100 technologies to the

CIA, mo st of which o therwise would never have been cons idered by the intelligence agency." It was In-Q-Tel money being

found co nnected with the Faceboo k startup that first ignited speculation abo ut the wildly popular so cial networking

application's s tatus as an intelligence gathering tool.

Perhaps mo st frightening of all is the notion that the Central Intelligence Agency has infiltrated the financial comm unity, even

going s o far as to create (or at least exploit) entire banks dedicated to the covert funnelling of funds. But that is a story

entirely unto itself, with dozens o f tentacles leading every poss ible direction, and as such, is perhaps best left to

another article.

Only a year and quarter before it got to me. Technolo gy is not what it used to be. Yeah I know. But it's easier to

blame someone else! Instead, all I'll ask is how lo ng to wait before the 200 m ark? You have a few chapters o n

but we had them all o n microfiche... I was do ing a research paper on the first evidence of Mafia influence in

America at the time, and I had to go through every single paper of that year, loo king for articles . You haven't lived

until you've go ne through every edition (including the Sunday edition) page by page on microfiche for a who le

year (I'm s ure you can imagine the horridness o f going through the rest o f the week, but Sunday is three times

Aine, that list might no t be complete, but it still lo oks like a pretty exhaustive run-down of all the major players

(and a quite a few others). I've done a couple o f articles o n the topic, and I am familiar with a number o f the

companies on yo ur list. I've even had business dealings with a couple o f them in a former life (a few of thesecompanies have, shall we say, so me 'less gray' busines s activities than security services contracting). There's

quite a number that are new to m e, too, though.

I noted you've go t SOS Temps on the lis t. Their web presence is no lo nger, and the implication is that they're no

longer in bus iness...but as I suggested in #7.1, my guess is they're in action but just under deep black status.

One of the most recent cases of apparent CIA cover would appear to be the rather troubling possibility that

the incredibly popular Facebook social networking application is in fact a CIA intelligence gathering tool. Partof this yet-to-be-proven 'internet rumour' is based on the a demonstrated connection -- however tenuous --

between the Pentagon's abortive (yet creepy) Information Awareness Office . Add in Facebook's venture

capital funding sources having demonstrated links to In-Q-Tel, which is itself a CIA technology incubator, and

you have more than enough smoke for an internet conspiracy theory fire.

I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. Perhaps they have invaded Newsvine, too ? Why not?

In fact, I'd be surprised if there were not. This would seem to be natural. Certainly I know (well, not exactly for a

fact, but second-hand anecdo tally) that Chinese ass ets doing open s ource intelligence gathering are very

methodical about reviewing blogs where people with inside knowledge m ight be congregating, and they are

using som e pretty so phisticated techniques for then fusing the nuggets they pick up.

sophisticated techniques for then fusing the nuggets they pick up.

I would not be at all surprised to find that there are members of the intelligence community right here

at Newsvine.

I think that it's safe to s ay that this is true. If you loo k closely at so me o f the seeds that are provided on

Newsvine and som e of the "enforcers" that come along with those seeds there seems to be a clos e connection

to both sources and relations.

In some ways what we've come to label "neo conservatives" is perhaps little more than a group that has signed

on to do CIA-led or affiliated operations to shape public po licy and opinio n in the name of a "Co ld War" that is

mo re about a permanent state of war against anyone and anything that would s tand in the way of the globalposition of American power-brokers.

Perhaps most frightening of all is the notion that the Central Intelligence Agency has infiltrated the

financial community

This is a given. For example, Jo hn Deutch, retired CIA director, was a Ci tigroup board m ember and No ra Slatkin,

retired CIA executive director was a Citibank board m ember. Remember that the majo r trading operations of

Citigroup were ho used at 7 World Trade Center along with the NYC offices o f the CIA and the Securities and

Exchange Com missio n - building that collaps ed along with the WTC towers o n September 11, 2001.

Money never strays far from po wer, and vice versa.

scientists into the research projects and growing the Patriotic propaganda about spreading freedom when we're

spraying for drugs with Roundup and giving Roundup Ready seed o ut for USAID. That what anything they can't kill is

theirs, easy fee enforcement and evergreen revenue in ano ther endless war; let's all race for a cure, hunt drugs..

the intelligence com munity) are basically still just functionaries for the elites yo u mention. They're the ones really

You're exactlly right, that's ho w the Red Cros s began too. The Red Cro ss War Council, funded by the NY Federal

Reserve gang, Foster Dulles, Rockefellers and JPMorgan. They were heavily invested in Russ ia and that's where

the aid was aimed. Go figure? There's so me o ld adage about beware benevolence but they do just eno ugh

It is certainly true that the CIA bought Chennault's airline, called Civil Air Transport, after it retreated with Chiang Kai-

shek to Taiwan in 1949 . As a contract flyer for the U.S. government, CAT flew troops and supplies from J apan to

Korea, and later in a mo re shadowy enterprise air-dropped similar cargo to Dienbienphu. (Shadowy because they

were USAF planes and American civilian pilo ts, but were painted in French colors.) There was o f course no thing

whatever wrong with this. Later the CIA took full control of CAT, re-named it Air America, and painted the planes a dull

gray.
