When we buy canned or bottled food products at the grocers or thesupermarket, we will find out that there are some additives added to the mainnutrients. An additives is a non-nutritive substance intentionally added tofood generally in small quantities, to improve appearance, flavor, storageproperties, etc. Most governments issue lists of permitted additives stating the highestacceptable concentration, defining food products in which they may be usedand sometimes recommending the maximum daily consumption. Suchlegislation is revised periodically, and product may be added to or deletedfrom permitted lists because of additional scientific knowledge and

experience of their use.A group of food additives includes vitamins, amino acids, and mineralswhich are added to foodstuffs to compensate for losses occurring duringprocessing or to provide additional sources in diet that might otherwise bedeficient in such nutrients. Examples of their use include enrichment omargarine with the addition of vitamin A, and niacin amide to flour or bread.Salt often has a small amount of iodine to it to avoid a diet deficiency thatcan cause goiter development.

Appearance is an important factor in food appeal, and legislation in mostcountries permits the addition of both natural and synthetic colouring materbased on the colouring standards issued by the Food and AgricultureOrganization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO).Flavoring materials are added to basic foodstuff to provide a characteristic

product flavor or to supplement or modify the original flavor. Most flavoringmaterials are still of natural origin, but progress in organic chemistry hasmade, it possible to analyze flavoring materials and to synthesize productsimilar with those found in nature.Flavor can also be influenced by the addition of the flavor enhancer such asmonosodium glutamate which intensifies perception of flavoring.

In any community its various arganism are linked in a complicated webrelationships. There are many usually in balance with one another. If thenatural web is disturbed, the results may be disastrous. As the rule, thevarious populations of organisms tend to adjust to seasonal and otherchanges, and the whole community stays in balance. Most disturbances comefrom man's activities. In an undisturbed forest, white-tailed deer feed on plants of varoius kinds.Wolves and mountain lions prey on the deer. When deer are numerous, theirenemies become numerous too, because there is so much to feed upon. Thedeer and their enemies stay in balance with one another. The man enters the scene. He looks on animals such as wolves and mountainlions as harmful. He killsas many as possible. When the animals that feed ondeer are killed, the deer multiply, without check. Soon the large deerpopulation has eaten nearly all the plants available for food. Then the deerbegin to starve.Another example of man's interference with natural communities is the use of

chemical insecticides. Grass in the sprayed ares may be eaten by cows. As arecult, teh milk of some cows has been found to contain too much DDT. theinsecticides are also collcted in the tissues of birds that eat the sprayedinsects. Some of the affected birds lay eggs that do not hatch. The number ofbirds therefore decreases, cutting down the food supply of other animals.

Whether intended or not, almost evry change that man has made in naturalwebs of life has turned out to be a disaster for communities involved.Everything he does affects all therest of it, just as any change in thecommunity or climate around him affects his won well-being. Thus, bychanging natural communities, man may harm himself."If natural web is disturbed........." (paragraph 1). The synonym of the worddisturbed is....

Oil like coal and natural gas, is a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels made from theremains of dead plants and animals. It is thought that oil comes from tinyplants and animals whose bodies fell in their millions to the seabed whenthey died. There they were covered by sand and mud, which later hardenedinto rocks. In the course of millions of years, the plants and animal materialunderwent chemical changes and eventually turned into oil.Oil deposit lie hidden deep beneath th surface of the earth. They have to besearched for. Unles the oil actually somes to the surface, it is impossible to becertain that any is present. The rising demand for oil products keeps the oil companies busy exploringnew oil fields, and drilling new wells. Exploration teams are sent to distantregions to search for oil. If the exploration shows good results, the companydecides to drill a well. Thus the exploration phase ends, and production pahsebegins.

Crude oil has to be transported to refinery to be made into the many productsthat are useful to man, such as petrol, krosene, diesel oil, lubricants, asphalt.Furtehr processing gives aviation fuel, greases, fertilizers, insecticides, man-made fibres and many other things. The oil industry has a very complex and widespread ditribution system.Ocean takers, pipelines, rail tankers, and road takers are used to bring the oilproducts to seaport, inland depots, can and drum factories, and to tens ofthousands of petrol stations in cities and along motorways.More than any other, oil industry influences the lives of men and womeneverywhere. From the largest to the simplest home, whose need may only bekerosens for its lammps and stoves, there is daily need for large quantities of

NOISENoise can be defined as sound that we do not want. This definition is asubjective one, however, because what is unwanted sound to other. Noise issubjective. That noise is subjective may mean that people receive it at different levels. This two people will not agree that the loud music from a neighbours house, for example, is noise. To one of them , however, it is tolerable, noisewhile tothe others it is anoying noise. This different in the levels of reception between

two people may be due to the fact the former is a patien person, whille theletter is not.To borrow a term from psychology, the person who can tolerate theloud music is said to have been conditioned, whill the person who isannoyed by it is said not to have been conditioned by the noise. In additio to the tolerance and annoyance levels, three is yet another level ofnoise reception. This is what might be called the demage level, where thenoise is such that it demage the eardrum. The demage may be temporary, andin this case the person concerned may be only temporarily deafened. It maybe also be that the damage is permanent. When this occurs the person becomepermanentely deaf.

Very often however, deafness does not occur right way but comes graduallyas result of along periode of exposure to the source of loud noise. Theperson concerned may tolerate that noise because he was been conditioned byit, but demage is done. The damaging noise will accelerate his gradual loss ofhearing due to growing age.

either. Yet few of us ever ask how this important liquid is extracted from theearth and changed into finished products. In the first place, it is not an easymatter to find an oil reserve. Exploration teams, sent by oil companies, haveto go to remote places, and sometimes have to live under harsh conditions, toexplore the earth or seabed for oil. They study the rock and the soil, and if

there are promising result, the next thing for the oil company to do is to senda drilling team to the location. Again, this not a simple matter. Roads, forexamples, have to be built first to transport the men and materials to the site. What is worse, the first drilling does not always bring about oil. The drillingteam often has to drill up to ten wells before oil is found.

TRADE FOR THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE

One person has vegetables, but wants fruit. Another man has a great deal offruit, but want some vegetables. So the first man gives some of his vegetablesto the second, and the second man gives some of his fruit to the first. He has

exchanged the vegetables for the fruit. They are happy now. Trade has madethem happy.People have always traded. Why have they traded? They have traded becausethey have wanted a better life. At first people exchanged their things for otherthings. Now people buy and sell things they trade for money. Many foreigners have come to Indonesia for trade. The first traders came forspices. That was for very long time ago. Now the traders come here for manyother things.History has shown us that a country has to trade if its people want a betterlife. Indonesia is trying hard to improve its trade. It sells many things to othercountries but the most important things are oil, rubber, tin and copra.

What has trade to other countries brought us? It has brought the things thatwe do not make. The cars that we drive, the tarin that we ride in, and thewatches that we wear are examples of this things. It is not hard to understandthat they have made life better. But we can trade only if we have more things than we need. So we have tomake or produce more things to sell. We have to produce more oil, morerubber, more tin, and more of other things. We have to produce better things, too, because we can get more money for them. All this means hard work forus, hard work at school, hard work at the office, hard work in the city, hardwork in the country, hard work everywhere. By this way we can all enjoy thegood things in life.

Suchlegislation is revised periodically, and product may be added to or deletedfrom permitted lists because of additional scientific knowledge andexperience of their use.A group of food additives includes vitamins, amino acids, and mineralswhich are added to foodstuffs to compensate for losses occurring duringprocessing or to provide additional sources in diet that might otherwise be

Examples of their use include enrichment omargarine with the addition of vitamin A, and niacin amide to flour or bread.Salt often has a small amount of iodine to it to avoid a diet deficiency thatcan cause goiter development.Appearance is an important factor in food appeal, and legislation in mostcountries permits the addition of both natural and synthetic colouring materbased on the colouring standards issued by the Food and AgricultureOrganization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO).

Hot boning is an energy saving technique for the meat processing industry. Ithas received considerable attention in recent years when increased pressurefor energy conservation has accentuated for more efficient methods ofprocessing the bovine carcass. Cooling of an entire carcass requires aconsiderable amount of refrigerated space, since bone and trimmable fat are

cooled along with the muscle. It is also necessary to space the carcassesadequately in the refrigerated room for better air movement and prevention ofmicrobial contamination, thus adding to the volume requirements for carcasschillers.Conventional handling of meat involves holding the beef sides in the coolerfor twenty four to thirty six hours before boning. Chilling in the traditionalfashion is also associated with a loss of carcass weight ranging from twopercent to four percent due to evaporation of moisture from the meat tissue.Early excision, or hot boning, of muscle prerigor followed by vacuumpackaging has several potential advantages. By removing, only the ediblemuscle and fat prerigor, refrigeration space and costs are minimized, boning

labor is decreased and storage yields increased. Because hot boning oftenresults in toughening of meat, a more recent approach, hot boning followingelectrical stimulation, has been used to reduce the necessary time of rigormortis. Some researchers have found this method beneficial in maintainingtender meat, while others have found that the meat also becomes tough afterelectrical stimulation.
