Think Outside the Box
• Keep an open mind.
• Some schools may house your interests differently than you think.
• Race relations in the inner city may be in anthropology not psychology or sociology.
A Good Faculty Match
• Make sure you are familiar with faculty’s work.
• Articles– When you are reading the article look at
the date, the person may no longer be working on that subject matter.
• See if there are professor or assistant professor (some may be emeritus, visiting or some other designation).
First Contact
– Professor, department secretary, graduate division
• Talk about your research interests, current projects, and ask questions about the professors current works.
• Does the school have any programs that pay for you to visit?
Let’s Get Personal
• A phone call to follow up-
– You may not get a reply to an e-mail
– Also try an actual sent letter (stamp is required for those of you who never sent an actual hard copy b4).
• Plan a visit even if you have to pay for the flight, IT WORKS!
When to Apply
• A deadline is just that, a last day.
• Funding goes early, so the sooner you apply the more money in the pot for you.
• Gives a chance to follow up to make sure all materials are in.
Money Money Money
• There are several Ways to fund our education – Fellowships– Grants– Loans that are forgiven– Husband/wife—Or Not…..

Walk It Off
