LA/OC SMTA Chapter Meeting
Rework though IR Technology A NEW Look

Infrared (IR) Technology has been around for a number of
years with many myths and fears regarding this technology.
This presentation will start by answering the question: why it
failed years ago, and, what exciting advances in Dark IR and
Reflow Process Control (RPC) will do to revolutionize the way
we profile and use Rework equipment in the future.
This presentation will discuss how the combination of this old
and new technology will make IR & RPC so important in dealing
with the demanding Rework and Repair process we face today.
Considering the pressures of smaller and more complex parts,
denser boards, reduced cost pressure, and increased productiv-
ity requirements; this presentation will provide a better under-
standing of how IR technology fits into achieving these goals. It
will discuss the principles of IR & RPC operation, what makes it
different then present methods and the benefits it offers in to-
day's environment.

Ian Horne C.E.O
Solder Connections Inc. Ian Horne has been involved in electronics for over nine-teen years from his trainee days back in 1983 where he was awarded UK’s Best Apprentice to his present position since 1998 as C.E.O. of the TEAM Electronics group of companies based in North America, Europe and Asia.
Ian like many of his fellow Scots throughout history have been rightly renowned for their willingness to look beyond their own borders and their determination to make the most of the opportunities available whether these are at home or in the wider world. This hasn’t happened by acci-dent – it can be traced back to the Scottish spirit of entre-preneurship, the determination to succeed and the ability to adopt a global attitude in their personal and business lives.
Ian’s present role is running the North American Division of Team Electronics namely Solder Connections Inc based in San Jose and Houston where he works in partnership with ERSA Inc bringing Soldering and Inspection expertise to the territory specializing in BGA Rework and Repair.
Ian is a member of the SMART Group (Surface Mount & Related Technologies) EMTA (Engineering and Marine Training Association) and the Entrepreneurial Exchange. He holds Higher National Diploma in Electrical & Elec-tronic Engineering from Bell College of Technology. Prior to setting up TEAM, he was employed by various O.E.M and C.E.M’s including IBM, Motorola and SCI.

Yongwan graduated with a BS from Auburn University, Alabama in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked with Siemens Dematic for the past 5 years as a Solutions Consultant in which he not only Sells but also does Engineering to work with the individual companies as required. He really enjoys the SMT Industry and like all of us is hoping the industry will turn around shortly. Yongwan enjoys camping and has been to the San Yisidro Mountains this year and is planning on camping later in the year in Yosem-ite.
Let’s all give Yongwan a warm “SMTA” welcome into the SMTA L.A. / O.C. Chapter!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT By: Riki Brown
Our August 8 LA/OC SMTA teamed with CCA for a very successful golf tournament. We had 94 golfers and 115 at the banquet. A good time was had by all and the Board wishes to thank Frank Kurisu of SolderMask, Inc. for his super human effort in pulling this all together to make it so suc-cessful and for donating all the trophies on top of that. I also wish to thank those of you who sent cards and phone calls regarding my back surgery as all went well and I should make a full recovery in a few more weeks. I am back to work now and look-ing forward to our future meetings and improvement in our business efforts and climate. In July of each year, National SMTA selects the Chapter of the Year to be recognized at the SMTA Annual Meeting during SMTA International (held in conjunction with ATExpo) in Chicago in Sep-tember. Several times the LA/OC chapter has won or tied with another chapter. I am proud of our chapter and the great board and members committed to supporting our chapter. This year we did not win but there is a very moving story behind the selection of this year’s Chapter of the Year that I would like to share with all of you. The Chapter that won was Oregon (they received one more point than our chapter). The Oregon Chapter came close to being selected Chapter of the Year last year and did receive an award for the most improved chapter. In their chapter they have a colleague, Ron Boyce, who has gone through a very difficult time from an accident and long recuperation period. Ron has served as a national director and was instrumental in the formation and leadership of the Oregon chapter. I do not have the pleasure of knowing Ron well but I talked with him many times at National meetings and in the National Committees in which I am involved. Ron has retired from Tektronics and has spent many tireless hours in service for SMTA. Ron had a fall on his boat (his home) around Christmas. With no family members to keep tabs on Ron, he was not missed for several days when a neighbor called on him. Injuries from the fall, the lack of attention for four to five days, left him in critical need of medical help, plus Ron also suffers from Parkinson’s disease. When members of the Oregon chapter heard that Ron was hospitalized, they came to his rescue. Many of the chapter leaders and members committed themselves to sup-porting Ron. They visited him in the hospital and rehabilitation center, helped him get back on-line so he could keep in touch with his colleagues and friends, provided transportation for him, helped him make difficult decisions, and most of all, were there for a colleague and friend. They literally adopted him and saved his life. The Chapter also recognized that prayers across the country (and SMTA) served as a tremendous help to Ron, as well. The happy ending to this story is that Ron is again attending Chapter Meetings and will probably be with the Oregon delegation at SMTA Inter-national to receive their Chapter of the Year Award.

Golf Get Together Organizer On Thursday, August 8, 2002, the LA / OC Surface Mount Technology Association and the IPC Cali-fornia Circuits Association held it’s 3rd Annual Golf Get Together at the California Country Club in Whittier. The event was well attended with 94 golfers teeing off in a shotgun start playing a 4 person scramble format (straight up, no handicaps). Even though the weather in Whittier was on the warm / HOT side all players had a great day “getting together” to be with others in our industries. Two beverage carts, manned by volunteers, kept all the teams well hydrated with, water, soft drinks, gatatorade and other beverages (you can guess what this might be). After the round everyone gathered in the bar to compare scores and stories. I must say that the atmos-phere in the bar was exciting, with people seeing friends and making new ones. To me, this scene was the purpose for the “Golf Get Together”, After cooling down and satisfying the need for a good stiff drink, everyone proceeded to the Banquet room where 109 players, volunteers and guests enjoyed a dinner of Prime Rib or Salmon. During din-ner a slide show was run showing pictures taken on the course by the volunteers of the players in ac-tion. The slide show proved to be a big hit with over 400 pictures taken. After dinner we raffled off $3,500.00 of Quality Golf Prizes. The last prize of the night was a DVD player, with a copy of Caddie Shack (which allowed the DVD player to qualify as a Quality Golf Prize). Many milestones were attained at this year’s “Golf Get Together” such as: The first year using the name of “Golf Get Together”, The first banquet, The first time trophies were awarded to the top three finishing teams (Trophies made and donated by SolderMask, Inc.) , The first time at a private country club, The first shotgun start, The first 4-person scramble, The first time for massages performed by a professional masseuse. A successful event such as the “SMTA / CCA Golf Get Together” does not just happen by itself. It takes many months of coordination and sacrifices to bring it to fruition. It does not happen without sponsors and volunteers. All parties committed to supporting this event showed their generosity and commitment to supporting our industries. To each volunteer, and sponsor, I say thank you for your support.
