According to a survey, its observed that almost 32 billion m3 of treated water is being
wasted when its being transported from one place to other through the distribution systems.
Old and poorly constructed pipelines, inadequate corrosion protection, unauthorized
connection, poorly maintained valves and mechanical damage are some of the factors
contributing to leakage. If it is possible to save this water, 200 million people can be provided
with this water without further treating.
In the earlier project, Infrastructure Management: Leak detection in water distribution system,
water flow sensors were used to detect leak and RF modules were used to communicate
between sensors and the server. In order to improvise the system RF modules are replaced by
the XBee modules. DBMS is implemented to record water distribution parameters and to
generate a report.
The proposed system, detects the leak in the water distribution system at the earliest. It
makes use of water flow sensors to detect the leak. The sensor gives voltage pulses whose
frequency is directly proportional to the water flow rate. Change in frequency indicates the
change in flowrate of water in that section. This information obtained is recorded in the
database enabling the authorised user to access the information easily. This information can
be used at the time of report generation. A solenoid valve is provided in the system in order to
cut down the water supply by closing the valve in case of heavy leakage, thereby saving the
water. Hence the maintenance of the water distribution system is made easy for the authority.
The main objectives of the project can be listed as
Detection of leakage in water distribution system at the earliest using the water flow sensors.
Notifying the authorized person about the leak in system and updating the information in the database, hence providing an easy way to generate the report at definite time
Provides easy maintenance of the water distribution systems for the authority
The proposed system consists a BHP pump used to pump the water through the
system. Three water flow sensors are used at various sections of the system. The model using
PVC pipes was designed to detect water leakage present.
The transmitter system of the model proposed is as shown below

The pulses from the sensor are counted using a microcontroller. This data is serially
moved to the XBee transceiver from where it will be transmitted to the server node. 5V DC
power supply is used to power the transmission system components.

The transmitted data are received by the XBee module at the receiver end. This received
data is processed using Arduino. The Arduino compares the data with predetermined
threshold value to detect leak. The processed information is passed on to the database using
an Ethernet shield. The GUI displays the database entries which are recorded at specified
time intervals. This data is used for report generation.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:
The final outcome of the project is a novel smart system that monitors the water leaks
in water distribution system and prevents wastage of water. It also records the data regarding
flow rate and total water flow in database. In this project a major module in Leak Detection in
Water Distribution System is successfully implemented using which water leaks are detected
in different parts of the system by processing the signal from the sensor system sent over RF
channel to the server and hence notifying the leak in different parts of the system. The project
has given a cost effective solution for real time water leak detection and report generation.
Any leak between two sensors nodes are successfully detected thereby enabling the authority to respond to the leak at the earliest.
The data received at the server node was analyzed and updated to the database periodically.
The data entered into the database can be used for report generation.
SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK: There is a scope for future work in every project in order to improvise the project and
convert it into a product which can be used. Some of the future scopes of this project are as
A noninvasive sensor can be used to detect the leak thereby detecting the leak without affecting the integrity of the distribution system.
Determining the exact location of leak by using more number of sensors.
T joints can be considered in leak detection.
The database can be improved.
