OBJECTIVESThe project is built around the SCIS webportal. The objective is to bring togetherproject developers, cities, institutions, industry and experts from across Europe toexchange data, experience and know-howand to collaborate on the creation of smartcities and an energy-efficient urbanenvironment.

As the successor to the EC’s three-yearCONCERTO initiative (Energy Solutions forSmart Cities and Communities), andreinforcing synergies with the Smart Citiesand Communities European InnovationPartnership, the project contributes to theEU’s goals of enhancing energy efficiency andenergy security, reducing CO2 emissions, andincreasing the share of renewable energy.

ACTIVITIESThe REC’s tasks in the consortium are relatedto managing project events and multiplieroutreach activities (i.e. coordinatingconsortium members’ participation atexternal events and their promotionalinteractions with selected partners). Thanksto the REC’s input for outreach and eventscoordination, the consortium has successfullyestablished the SCIS initiative as a centralinformation hub of European smart citiesdemonstration projects.

The REC has developed online content, suchas the portal’s “Mobility and Transport”,“Events”, “Demonstration Projects” and“Resources” sections. It has also contributednews items and other content.

The project’s highly successful finalconference “Empowering Smart Solutions forBetter Cities” was co-organised by the RECand hosted in a revitalised former industrialsite in central Budapest. The two-day eventtook place in October 2017, attracting morethan 150 creative thinkers and decisionmakers from throughout Europe. The goalwas to facilitate the replication of solutions, good practices and lessons learned amongcities and business to drive forward a smartand sustainable vision of Europe.

A number of opinion leaders commentedthat the conference’s highly interactive format“set a new standard”. The first day startedwith a “Smart Walking Tour” of Budapest, introducing smart city innovations in the fieldof mobility, geothermal energy, smartbuildings and social innovation. The eventalso featured a panel discussion involvinghigh-level city representatives fromGothenburg, Brno, Bilbao, Budapest andWarsaw. The remainder of the conferencewas fully dedicated to interactive sessions tomaximise the sharing of experience andpromote the replication of innovation.
