VoIP: Why Worry About Power?

Downtime per year:

• Public telephone network—5 minutes (99.999% available)

• Typical data network GOAL—8.5 hours (99.9% available)

• Typical data network ACTUAL—up to 43 hours per year (>99.5% available)

Network reliability, including power, must improve when shifting voice service onto the data network

No Power = No Phone Service!

VoIP: Why Worry About Power?

Because Cisco Says You Should!

“Plan your Power: When an IP network carries voice, reliability is essential. In case of an emergency, people need to summon assistance by dialing 911. When using inline power to switches and routers, make sure they are connected to an uninterruptible power supply to guarantee dial tone if the power should go out.”

Switches & Routers

• Phone service will crash without operational switches and routers

• Existing switches that are upgraded to supply inline power (PoE) to phones require a larger UPS with longer backup time than they may currently have

• A larger UPS will support the added power demand from the phones and supply power for hours, not minutes Tripp Lite SU2200RTXL2Ua UPS System

Deployment Example

Cisco CallManager Setup

All Cisco CallManager servers are installed with PowerAlert Software (version 12) and communicate with the UPS via USB, Serial, or Network connection to the SNMPWEBCARD. In the event of power problems, the UPS instructs the PowerAlert enabled servers to shut down gracefully. The servers can be shut down simultaneously or sequentially.
