BEAL SIXTH FORM

We are a dual-campus sixth form with excellent educational outcomes and confident progression opportunities. We meet the needs of all students via three aspirational pathways. Our curriculum is designed for progress.

The core aim of BSF is to provide and extend an exceptional study experience for local students. We aspire to:

• Provide post-16 learners with access to a rigorous, broad and varied curriculum• Widen participation and robustly support social mobility through ensuring that high

numbers of students move on to destinations within universities and HEIs or onto further training through high-quality careers and progression guidance

• Improve the life chances and social capital of all learners, but particularly the disadvantaged, through a completely inclusive approach to curriculum modelling and teaching and learning

• Develop engaged and resilient young people who positively contribute to their communities and who understand their responsibilities as citizens

• Create opportunities for students to develop leadership skills through engagement with higher education and the professional workplace. Students will be self-regulating in overcoming challenge and forging solutions

The outcomes and progress for BSF students are excellent, placing us in the top 25% of schools. Progression beyond the sixth form is remarkable with 90% of students moving on to university and 30% of these accepting places at Russell Group institutions. In summer 2018, ALPS graded our A level and BTEC results as outstanding for progress. Our provision has been, consistently, judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

BSF offers post-16 education opportunities to students who meet our academic entry requirements. We have places available for students from Beal High School and The Forest Academy and we welcome applications from students at other schools. The majority of our courses are A Levels and Level 3 BTEC courses but we also offer a three year Foundation Pathway for students not yet ready to embark on Level 3 courses. The Foundation Pathway allows students to improve their Level 2 qualifications, progressing to Level 3 programmes of study the following year.

By enrolling at BSF, you will be joining a successful and dynamic organisation. We have a wealth of experience to help ensure that all our students make significant progress during their time in the sixth form. Our size allows us to offer a wider range of courses than many other schools and to hold on to those subjects which are disappearing such as the Arts and languages. As a student you can trust that you will enjoy an outstanding education at BSF enhanced by supportive and experienced staff. As a parent/carer you can be assured that the students will be given expert teaching, advice and guidance for future success.

BSF offers three pathways:• 3 linear A Levels or a mix of 3 linear A Levels/Level 3 BTECs • 2-3 Level 3 BTECs with no A Level courses• 3-year Foundation Pathway

There may be an opportunity to study 4 linear A Levels if your GCSE Average Point Score is 7.5 or greater; if you choose A Level Maths and Further Maths; or if there is evidence your progression requires 4 courses.

The ‘Pathways’ programme for progression from Year 11 to Year 12 is designed to provide a broad range of courses that increase progression chances and success:

The subject choices shown below are based around the Russell Group of universities categorisation of Facilitating and Specialist* subjects, as well as the BSF category - Vocational. Facilitating subjects, as defined by the Russell Group, are those that are often more commonly required by these universities and “facilitate” the study of other subjects. For example, Mathematics not only prepares for the future study of Mathematics, but also it facilitates the study of Engineering and Economics; Biology prepares for a degree in Biology, but it also facilitates the study of Sport Science and Medicine.

The Russell Group also suggests that the ‘Facilitating’ subjects are more challenging. BSF data on student outcomes also reflects this and indicates that students with higher GCSE grades perform better in these subjects.

In addition to the Average GCSE Point Score requirement to access a given pathway, students will also need to achieve subject-specific entry requirements for certain subjects. These are listed alongside the titles of courses on offer.

*See the Russell Group “Informed Choices” at https://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/media/5272/informedchoices-print.pdf

The following table gives an overview of all subjects on offer; whether they are Facilitating, Specialist or Vocational; the subject specific entry requirements; any specific English or Mathematics entry requirements as well as information on the type of subject (humanity, creative etc.):

3 Year Foundation PathwayWhat is the ‘3 Year Pathway’? Our unique three year pathway affords students not yet ready for Level 3 study the time, space and support to make this transition successfully, so that they are ready for higher academic study and for life beyond the school gates.

Who is it for? Committed and aspirational young people who are yet to pass English/Maths at level 4 or higher and so cannot yet start level 3 subjects – typically they have grades 2 or 3 in their core subejcts but are aiming for university. Sometimes these can be EAL learners or pupils with SEND, but not exclusively.

How does it work? Each student chooses three subjects (out of nine varied subjects) as well as their core re-sits, so that they have a broad and balanced curriculum that they enjoy and that secures their progression. After Year 1 these students enrol onto level 3 courses for a further two years. Every year some of our most successful learners are those who have chosen this route to academic success.

How do we know it works? Of our 135 Year 13 school leavers over the summers of 2017 and 2018, 29 have graduated from the 3 Year Pathway. Of these, 21 have now begun university courses (including 5 at Russell Group institutions), 3 have started apprenticeships and 5 have started meaningful employment.

BEAL SIXTH FORM

In August, students who meet the conditions of their offer will automatically be given a place. Those who do not meet the conditions will be put on a reserve list for the places that are available. Decisions will be made according to group size, ability and aptitude. If students do not fulfil the entry requirements, their place is not guaranteed.

Maintaining a place in the sixth form and progressing to Year 13

We expect all sixth form students to be role models for the younger members of the school community and commit fully to all aspects of everyday life in the sixth form.

Students who are successful in gaining a place on a two-year linear A Level or Level 3 BTEC course will maintain their place if they attend regularly, complete and are successful in internal assessments in Years 12 and 13.

Students following a two-year linear A Level course will be continually assessed via independent study, tests, Year 12 progression exams and mock exams. Students will be expected to perform well in these continuous assessments in order to progress from Year 12 to 13.

Students following a two-year Level 3 BTEC course will be expected to pass at least 50% of assessments at the first attempt in Year 12 in order to progress from Year 12 to 13 – thus allowing resit opportunities in Year 13.

Students following the 3-year Foundation Pathway will need to pass their courses and gain the entry requirements for their chosen Level 3 pathway in order to make this progression.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSBSF support and encourage students to be successful. Our expectation is that they make the most of opportunities offered and that by working with us they realise their ambition through Further or Higher Education or in the career of their choice. Sixth form students are under more pressure than ever before to succeed right from the start of Year 12. Below are some recommendations for successful study in the sixth form:

A successful student will:

• Choose the subjects they enjoy, and understand what studying those subjects will demand.

• For each hour in the classroom, spend a further two hours on independent study.• Organise study time and develop effective study skills.• Balance study with other activities.• Take responsibility, alongside tutors, for academic progress.• Set a clear, realistic goal to achieve at the end of the course and plan how to use the

qualification for a career or further education.
