Sixth Form Information Evening
23rd November 2016
Bolingbroke Academy 6th Form Vision
Our Sixth Form will combine the highest of expectations with increased
independence and responsibility for our students. Sixth Formers will be leaders within
the wider Bolingbroke family. They will access a rich, rewarding and personalised set
of experiences that will raise aspirations and open up new opportunities.
The Sixth Form will be small and based on powerful learning relationships between
students and a team of exceptionally committed teachers, willing to do whatever it
takes to achieve our mission of preparing students for success at university and
beyond. The challenging and engaging curriculum will focus on enabling subjects and
qualifications, with a tailored range of courses to choose from but with a continuing focus
on our STEM and music specialisms.
We will ensure all students realise their potential, achieving the outstanding
outcomes and acquiring the wider skills and experiences that will prepare them to go
on to prestigious universities and successful rewarding careers.
‘We are delighted to be working with Bolingbroke
Academy to help their students make the journey to
university. We have a range of initiatives including our
K+ programme, summer schools, parents evenings
and teacher development opportunities that will
engage the whole school community in thinking
about higher education options.’ Dr Anne Greenough - Director of Education and
Training, King's Health Partners

Myth or Reality?
Not studying A Levels means that you cannot go to university
Employers do not hire people who haven’t done A Levels
Studying vocational qualifications means you earn less money over your lifetime
Higher apprenticeships resulting in a Foundation Degree (level 5) yield greater lifetime earnings than gaining a degree
from a non-Russell Group university
Technical qualifications hold the same number of UCAS points as 3 A Levels. 95%
of universities and colleges in the UK accept students with Technical qualifications.
A large number of jobs will be created in sectors that tend to rely on vocational
qualifications. More employers and looking to recruit School Leavers at 18, and are
being incentivised by government to do so.
Taking Applied Science means I have to follow STEM related subjects or careers afterwards
Science is a such well respected subject that it can be the ideal stepping stone to a wide
range of careers or further study. For example finance , business, care professions,
law and many others.

Group Provision
What is the Russell Group?
Russell Group members (24 of them) received approximately two-thirds of all university research grant and contract income in the United Kingdom. The group is widely perceived as representing the best universities in the country. Russell Group members award 60% of all doctorates gained in the United Kingdom,
and over 30% of all students studying in the United Kingdom from outside the EU. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 68% of world-leading research and 68% of research with an outstanding impact was carried out in Russell Group universities.

What is Oxbridge?
The name “Oxbridge” is simply an amalgamated term for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Both universities have a history of academic excellence, outstanding teaching and
ground-breaking research. They are recognised as two of the most academically prestigious Universities in the world.
Who should apply?
Students who can think for themselves
Students who can work well and cope under pressure
Students who can work independently of their teachers
Students who have an active and genuine interest in the subject they wish to study
Students who perform very well in examinations
Students who thrive when challenged and pushed
The answer to this is, tough. Applications to Oxford and Cambridge continue to rise year-on-year. The number of places available remain static.
The general offer for a place ranges from A* A* A to A A A depending on course.
The average success rate for applications to Oxford and Cambridge is approximately 20%
However, you have as much chance as anybody else. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain by applying.
How competitive is the
process?
Oxford and Cambridge, although similar in many ways, do have several key differences. When you express an interest in application, we’ll help to guide you towards the best choice for you personally. Both Unis are collegiate, meaning they are made up of lots of colleges. You are a member of the University, but you belong to and live in a specific college.
