Welcome to the 36th International Festival - 60 years of ISB

ISB is celebrating its 60th anniversary and would like to, in association with the Family Association, extend a warm welcome to the 36th Annual International Festival. Our diverse school community is very proud of this major event. This is an opportunity for countries and cultures to come together to share with one another and to have a great day of fun.

Doors open at 10:00 but at 10:45 our Director Kevin Bartlett, will officially open the Festival, followed by the Parade of Nations at 11:00.

Outside and in the Gyms you will find around 30 country booths representing 57 countries selling fabulous food and products unique to their own countries and cultures. There will be experiences for all tastes and ages! Children are well catered for with ‘Plate Painting’, other activities, and a resident clown roaming about!

Entertainment this year will be on the stage in the Drama Studio (formerly Annex). An amazing variety of performers have signed up so be sure to pop in! The full schedule can be found later in this programme.

Take the opportunity to peruse the non-country booths as well! There will be several including: The Jane Goodall institute, The Board of Trustees, Kattenberg Krafts, and more!

The popular Used Book Sale will be found outdoors in the Tent Village this year.

Remember to buy your Raffle tickets in the New Gym. The draw will be at 16:00.

ISB is an environmentally friendly school so please dispose of your trash in the colour coded bins.

The First Aid Station can be found in the Foyer, near the Gym doors.

Children’s Activities

There is plenty to do for the children. Activities include Painting Plates in the Drama Studio... paint your own ceramic plate and take it home as a souvenir! The NHS will again offer Face Painting!

Watch ‘Frederico’ the clown on stage in the Drama Studio at around 13:00 and 15:00 but kids, keep your eye out for other spontaneous performances anywhere!

Parade of Nations

Parade starts at11:00, led by a kilt-clad band of Scottish pipers and The Brussels Caledonian Corneymusers. We encourage everyone to join in. Meet outside at 10:45 on the Chateau field.

Remember to recycle! Blue for plastic. Yellow for clean paper. Grey for non-recyclable rubbish.

Raffle

The location of the ever-popular Raffle has moved ever-so-slightly to the back wall of the New Gym. Tickets are available all day at 1 Euro each and the draw is at 16:00

Step into our Bazaar to see crafts from all over the Arab World including Jewelry, pottery, picture frames, natural soaps, scarves and more. Not to forget our Henna artist who will be back with more of her traditional and trendy designs for all ages. Experience Arab hospitality and get a free cup of fresh mint tea.

Bangladesh Hamidul Khandaker Enjoy the real taste of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh booth is filled with a variety of traditional foods: Chicken Tandoori, Chicken wings, Beef curry, Plain rice, Vegetable curry, Chicken Biriani, Samosa, Vegetable pakura, Vegetable roll, Piajoo and Traditional pitha/sweets. Visitors can also buy Bangladeshi handicrafts.

BelgiumInge De Lathauer - Duyck

This year, Tintin will be at ISB! Swing by the Belgian booth to stock up on Tintin memorabilia and to sample some of our local specialties. As in the past, we will serve refreshing beer and delicious homemade Belgian waffles. We will also be introducing other Belgian treats such as boudin de Liège, fromage d’abbaye and a famous Belgian sweet, the curberdon. Children can play “La pêche aux canards” sponsored by our friendly neighborhood toy store L’Atelier de Gepetto. And keep an eye out for our student hostesses who will be handing out free samples of delicious pralines thanks to a very generous donation from Godiva!

For a bit of sunshine, plenty of smiles, a relaxed chat and the world famous caipirinhas, come and join us at the Brazil booth. You can also taste delicious non-alcoholic tropical drinks, Guaraná soda, Brazilian chocolate truffles, freshly baked pão de queijo and other delicacies. Smile, you will be in Brazil when you visit us.

CanadaSonia Bromley, Shirley OlneyOh Canada! The true north strong and free! Visit our booth to sample Canadian foods and buy famous Canadian products like maple syrup, pancake mix, Tim Horton’s coffee, clamato juice, beer and maple cookies. We’ve also got souvenirs for the kids. Come early!

What would you expect from a proper French booth? Champagne, good wine, fine cheese, foie gras, crêpes and a great diversity of homemade French pastries… plus two great games where children have fun and win prizes: the Play Box for throwing balls at a pyramid stack and Go Fishing game where small children will catch a prize with a fishing pole!

Germany/Austria Maren Bombach, Ulrike Karkossa‘Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit!’ Great traditions and great food from Germany and Austria! Greece/CyprusTina Zournatzi and Irini StavridouGreece is back again! After a three-year absence, the Greek booth returns, this time with Cyprus, to offer you the most exquisite tastes from the Mediterranean. Begin your gastronomic journey with a selection of Greek mezzes, Haloumi cheese from Cyprus and a free drink of ouzo. Continue with a delicious spinach or cheese pie and finish with the world famous Greek souvlaki. If you want more, you can choose from a wide variety of organic Greek products and wine to take home with you. For those wishing to share in our rich culture, have your name written in Greek or take a quiz on Greek and Cypriot history. But what would a visit to the Greek and Cypriot booth be like without a thought about a holiday on their sunny beaches? In June 2012 Poland and Ukraine will host the UEFA European Football Championship. That’s why we decided that the theme of the joint Polish-Ukrainien booth will be Euro 2012. Please come and play a game of table soccer (tischfussball), have a lookk at some Euro 2012 gadgets, taste our delicious food and have a shot of Bison vodka - Zubrowka, from the primeval forest of Bialowieza. There will be also famous Polish pottery from Boleslawiec on sale.

South Africa – ‘The Rainbow Nation’ is famous for its natural beauty, fantastic weather, superb wines and its interesting mix of cuisine.Unfortunately we cannot bring you our natural beauty or fantastic weather, but we can share a selection of our superb wines with you as well as traditional boerewors rolls! We will also have a variety of traditional homemade desserts to tempt the taste buds. The “Soccer for Hope” charity – based in South Africa -will also be at our stand, selling a selection of South African beaded souvenirs and soccer cupcakes - Come along, you won’t be disappointed !

Come and have a glimpse of what Spain has to offer! Take a visual walk of the different aspects of the Spanish culture while you eat our famous paella & drink a rioja, one of the best wines in the world. To finish with a little fun, try your aim drinking from our porron.

Are you dreaming of summer in wonderful Mediterranean village by the coast? Well, you might be at the right address! delight at the Turkish booth. We can‘t promise you on warming sun but you will surely enjoy our handmade ceramics and evil-eye jewelry flown directly from Turkey for you! Don’t forget to end your day with a piece of baklava as a Turkish proverb says: Let‘s eat sweet and talk sweet!

For the fourth year in a row the UK booth will run a 'Tuck Shop' (aka sweet shop or candy store!) with lots of British favourites like Cadburys Cream Eggs, Walkers Crisps, Aero, Rolo, Smarties, Swizzlers and a fabulous selection of Easter Eggs. As you are no doubt aware, the UK is hosting the 2012 Olympics… please do come by and see our Olympic goodies, including the wonderful cupcake designs from Jeanette “Lilliputbo”. For more years than we can remember, the UK booth had offered something for the adults and this year is no exception – join us for a refreshing glass of Pimms, some very British beers or your shot choice from several brands of Whiskey for which we thank our very generous sponsors: Diago. New this year: Strawberries and Cream... why not indulge and have a taste of summer.

We‘re celebrating our birthday a little early this year. Join us for an early 4th of July Celebration - Picnic Style! Stop by for Hot Dogs (add chili and cheese for a delicious alternative), Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Mac n Cheese, Baked Beans and Cole Slaw. For those with a sweet tooth, we‘ll also have plenty of cupcakes, cookies and brownies on hand to satisfy those sugar cravings. Kattenberg KraftsLara Alsen

Kattenberg Krafts is a student - run organisation that raises money for two special causes every school year. In the first semester of this year, Kattenberg Krafts supported a school in Kenya for children with cerebral palsy and other special needs. This semester, the money goes towards the Belgian Special Olympics, as all of ISB’s Special Education students attend the event. To raise the money that we donate, the students involved in Kattenberg Krafts and the Special Education Students participate in creating handmade jewellery, cards, bookmarks, hangers and other accessories. Every year, we have a stand at the International Festival that showcases the crafts in hopes of selling some of our products and raising awareness for the important causes we support.
