EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this 1 day course you will be able to:» Assess at-risk patients and reduce risk of medical emergencies

» Identify and manage common medical emergencies both as a leaderand part of a team

» Use emergency drugs and equipment likely to be available in generaldental practice

Hands-on observed simulator training» Preparatory lecture.

This will look at identification of at- risk patients and detail the drugs andequipment which should be held in general dental practice. It will also describehow to recognise and manage common medical emergencies in dental practice.

» Skills stationsHere Practitioners will work in small groups to gain the practical skills needed tomanage medical emergencies. The areas covered will include:

1. Administration of O2 and use of airway adjuncts2. Administration of emergency drugs e.g. adrenaline & glucagon3. Use of Emergency equipment e.g. AED & glucometer4. Management of choking / recovery position

» Simulation-based emergency scenariosPractitioners will work in small teams to manage 6 simulation based scenariosusing high fidelity sim models. Every participant will have the opportunity to actas leader of that team in the management of emergency scenarios. You will beobserved by expert Faculty with team debriefing for each station
