AP50 AutopilotThe Simrad AP50 offers the ultimate in autopilot performance

for vessels over 50 feet. More than 60 years of experience and

development is embedded in the most comprehensive of all pilot system

packages. It offers a wide range of controls, displays and interfaces

to build up a complete bridge steering system suitable for commercial

craft, super and mega yachts, power and sailboats. You will find all the

features you would expect from a true commercial pedigree.

The steering algorithms in the AP50 is the result of over 60 years of

steering experience. The special Auto Heading Capture is based on

experience with the offshore market. The AP50 will provide precise

steering, using the least amount of rudder movements necessary.

Save fuel and wear on the steering-gear with the Adaptive Sea state

Filter, Automatic rudder offset, Adaptive rudder deadband, Adaptive speed response, Second compass for course monitoring and

Adaptive pump speed.

The WORK mode of Simrad autopilots has been taken to an even higher level in the AP50 autopilot. The Auto Work mode

is an automatic steering mode to be used under operational conditions, different from those normally found when a vessel is

in normal transit on a pre-set course. Examples are trawling, towing, being towed, trolling on one engine, slow speed etc. As

GPS Chartplotters and Electronic Charting Systems (ECS) have become standard equipment on most vessels today, this Work

feature has now been implemented in the AP50 navigation mode resulting in a Nav Work mode. Combined with a bow-thruster,

navigational steering is now possible at low speeds previously considered unsuitable for autopilot use.

AP50 Plus AutopilotWith the new range of distribution units, the AP50 Plus can interface with almost any magnetic compass, gyrocompass, steering

gear and navigation receiver. The new system is Wheelmark approved for commercial vessels including HSC.

AP50 Plus has been designed to produce very accurate steering under autopilot control. The autopilot has been programmed to learn how the rudder responds to commands. This both reduces rudder activity and ensures that the rudder is positioned exactly as required, so eliminating rudder overshoot. It also compensates for wear and play in the steering gear, which can be of particular importance when using AP50 Plus as a retrofit autopilot. Precise course keeping is guaranteed due to the ability to set all parameters on the AP50 Plus individually with a high level of fine tuning.

The AP50 Plus can be built up as a part of a complete steering system for all types of vessels. A combination of steering levers, rudder angle indicators and gyro repeaters can be used to create an integrated steering station on the bridge.

As an optional feature, the AP50 Plus can be configured to control a bow thruster. Rudders are inefficient at the slow speeds often required by dredgers and survey vessels. A vessel can, however, maintain an accurate heading by automatic control of a bow thruster through the AP50 Plus autopilot.

The configuration possibilities of Simrad autopilots, made by the selection of specific modules, will cover all applications, from small inshore fishing boats to large ferries and survey ships. Flexibility in system choice covers all retrofit applications.

The AP50Plus can be built up as a part of a complete steering system for all types of vessels. A conmbination of steering levers, rudder angle indicators and gyro repeaters can be used to create an integrated steering station on the bridge.

The AP51 portable remote control may simply be plugged in to the network and it is ready to use. The remote will provide total portable control over the autopilot system including direct thruster control.

The FU50 Follow-up steering lever features a unique non linear dial (scale) to allow precise rudder control around rudder mid position, with 5° rudder angle markings. The rudder will move and stop at the angle selected on the dial. The FU50 has a mid-position indent, buttons for (limited) mode selection, and mode indicators (STBY, FU, AUTO, NAV, WORK, and THRUSTER). It is designed for indoor and outdoor bulkhead- or panelmounting.

The RI35 Mk2 Rudder Angle Indicator gives a continuous reading of the rudder position up to 45 degrees on either side of the amidships position.Designed to operate from frequency or current input signals, generated by a Simrad autopilot feedback unit, the RI35 Mk2 will also accept a NMEA 0183 rudder angle (RSA) signal.Manufactured in noncorrosive aluminium with a nonreflective black finish, the instrument is a standard modular size (132 x108 mm) to match the Simrad AP35 autopilot. A front panel key is used for illumination and setup. The splash proof construction allows panel, bulkhead or bracket mounting in

exposed locations, such as bridge wings as well as wheel house and engine room.

Hydraulic steering systems are now being used in every category of vessel. In many respects hydraulic steering is preferable to mechanical steering. Hydraulic systems normally comprise of two main components, a steering wheel pump and steering cylinder(s). The steering wheel pump may be either a gear pump or a plunger pump. Which ever type is installed, steering is achieved by turning the steering wheel in either direction causing oil from the wheel pump to be supplied to the appropriate side of the cylinder. Oil is returned via the opposite side of the cylinder back to the pump.The linear motion of the cylinder rod is transformed to a rotary motion by the tiller, which turns the rudder shaft and rudder. Check valves (non-return valves) are usually incorporated to prevent the rudder driving the steering wheel pump. If an autopilot is to be included in such a hydraulic steering system, then the oil flow providing the rudder movement must be controlled by electrical signals from the autopilot. The maximum flow rate of RPU80, RPU160 and RPU300 is 0,8 l/min., 1,6 l/min. and 3,0 l/min. respectively, measured at a pressure of 10 bar with nominal voltage (12 VDC) on the motor terminals.

The rudder feedback unit transmits a signal proportional to the rudder angle. It is mounted close to the rudder stock and is mechanically connected to the rudder by a transmission link in a 1:1 ratio.The RF14XU Rudder Feedback Unit consists of a glass reinforced non-flammable polyester housing with a mounting plate of sea-water resistant aluminium. It contains a potentiometer, limit switches and an electronic drive module. Output is either a voltage varying ±9 volts around half the supply voltage, or a frequency signal with 3400 Hz for use with a Simrad autopilot. The shaft of the Feedback Unit is free to travel 360 degrees, but only ±90 degrees from midposition are used for signal control. The RF45X is a medium duty rudder feedback unit. It is a repairable rather than a potted “throw

away” item. The RF45X has “universal” frequency output which can be used with both AP35 and

AP50, and the older AP45 and AP9 without the use of internal jumpers.

The RGC50 is a compact gyrocompass, designed to enhance the navigation capabilities on

small commercial, fishing vessels, and large pleasure yachts. A gyrocompass eliminates the

inconvenience and limitations of magnetic compasses, and provides a variety of electrical

outputs to supply accurate and consistent heading information to other navigation equipment.

MX575A DGPS CompassThe MX575A D/GPS compass is designed to provide the

Simrad Professional Autopilots, MX5XX Series navigation

and AIS systems with reliable heading, ROT (Rate of Turn)

and position information. The MX575A delivers a heading

accuracy of better than 0.5° at update rates of up to 10

Hz. It also provides sub-meter DGPS positioning accuracy

at rates of up to 5 Hz when using RTCM correction data

supplied from internal beacon demodulator.

To augment the GPS-derived heading, the MX575A

includes other supplemental devices. The combination

of inclinometer and magnetic sensing devices aid the rate at which a heading solution is computed on startup and also speeds

up reacquisition. A rate gyro provides a secondary source of heading data in times when the GPS heading is not available due to

temporary obstructions. These sensors improve performance and increase dependability of the MX575A. The MX575A features

two independent RS-232 serial ports and one RS-422 port. Either RS-232 port may be configured freely for a variety of NMEA

0183 output sentences or for the input of RTCM correction data from an external source. The output of the RS-422 port mirrors

that of one RS-232 port. It also features COAST™ technology that allows it to use old correction data for up to 40 minutes without

seriously affecting positioning performance. This feature offers peace of mind and allows you to focus on more important issues

than reliability of a differential signal.
