A Brief HistoryMost Filipinos belong to the Malay race. The Philippines is a unique nation with four cultures

Asian, Spanish, Mexican, and American.

As early as the 10th century, the Filipinos traded with the Chinese and Arabs who introduced Islam to the country

In 1521 Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese, sailed from Spain to the Philippines and thus began the 3 centurie rule of Spain. The Philippines was named after King Philip II of Spain (1556-1598)

It was because of this expedition that Magellan proved that the world was round

The Spanish friars introduced Christianity to the natives. Spain governed the Philippines via the Galleon Trade that sailed through Mexico which is why a lot of our customs and culture have a Mexican influence

In the 18th century the British invaded Manila but only held it for a few months

In 1898 the Americans defeated the Spaniards in the Spanish-American War and Spain turned over the

Philippines to America, who governed the country for 50 years. The Americans built many schools across the country and educated the Filipinos, which is why today, most Filipinos speak English and the Philippines is ranked the third largest English-speaking country in the world

On December 10, 1941, Japan attacked Manila (after Pearl Harbor), and defeated the Americans. They occupied the Philippines for 4 years until MacArthur’s return in 1945

The United States granted the Philippines its independence on July 4, 1946 and Manuel Roxas was the first president

Ferdinand Marcos was elected president in 1965. In1971 Marcos declared Martial Law. His dictatorship grew until 1986 when he called an election, and the wife of assassinated political leader, Benigno Aquino, Corazon Aquino, defeated him in elections. Fidel Ramos succeeded her as president, followed by Joseph Estrada, who was impeached. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo stepped into the presidency and after ten years of corrupt rule, the people elected Benigno Aquino Jr., son of Corazon Aquino, to be the next leader. Aquino is the president of the Philippines today.
