Accademia GalleryMuseum

The Gallery is particularly famous for its sculptures by

Michelangelo: the Prisoners, the St.Matthew and,

especially, the statue of David which was transferred

here, to the specially designed tribune, from Piazza

della Signoria in 1873.

In the adjacent rooms, which were part of two former

convents, important works of art were collected here in

the 19th century from the Academy of Design, the

Academy of Fine Arts and from suppressed convents.

The holdings comprise mostly religious paintings by

major artists working in and around Florence between

the mid-13th and the late 16th centuries. The collection

is especially important for its gold-ground paintings. In

the first floor rooms is a sequence of splendid late-

gothic polyptychs, complete in all their parts. There is

also a collection of sculptures in plaster by the 19th-

century sculptors Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni,

besides a section of Russian icons. Recently the Gallery

has been further enriched by the important collection of

o ld musica l ins t ruments f rom the Cherub in i

Palatine GalleryMuseum

The Palatine Gallery occupies the whole left wing of the

first floor of the Pitti Palace, which was the residence of

the Medici grand-dukes. In 1828, when Tuscany came

under the rule of the Lorraine family, the most important

paintings in the Palace, most of which had been

collected by the Medici, were hung in the Gallery. It is

an impressive collection comprising works by Raphael,

Titian, Correggio, Rubens, Pietro da Cortona and other

Italian and European masters of the Renaissance and

Baroque periods. The paintings, which are sumptuously

framed, cover the walls of the rooms in the style of

traditional 17th-century picture galleries. The way they

are hung and the rich plaster and fresco decoration of

the suite of six rooms overlooking the piazza give the

Gallery its particular fascination.

From the Palatine Gallery the visit continues through the

Royal Apartments. They consist of fourteen magnificent

rooms which were the home of the Medici and Lorraine

grand-ducal families and, from 1865, of the king of Italy.

Pisa TowerMonument

The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral. Its

construction began in the august of 1173 and continued

(with two long interruptions) for about two hundred

years, in full fidelity to the original project, whose

architect is still uncertain. In the past it was widely

believed that the inclination of the Tower was part of the

project ever since its beginning, but now we know that it

is not so. The Tower was designed to be "vertical" (and

even if it did not lean it would still be one of the most

remarkable bell towers in Europe), and started to incline

during its construction. Both because of its inclination,

and its beauty, from 1173 up to the present the Tower

has been the object of very special attention. During its

construction efforts were made to halt the incipient

inclination through the use of special construction

devices; later colums and other damaged parts were

substituted in more than one occasion; today,

interventions are being carried out within the sub-soil in

order to significantly reduce the inclination and to make

sure that Tower will have a long life. In all this story it is

possible to find a meaningful constant, the "genetic

code" of the Tower: its continual interaction with the soil

on which it was built. Today's works for the safeguard

and the conservation of the Tower with very advanced

methodologies are designed to fully respect this

constant.
