Organizer’s Message:
Siddhar Agathiyar, one among the line of eighteen Siddhars, is called the father of Siddha
Medicine. His contribution to Siddha system of medicine and other related fields is immense. Ministry of
AYUSH has approved the proposal to celebrate Agathiyar’s birthday as “Siddha Day” every year. So, we have
decided to celebrate in a grand manner the first “Siddha Day’ which falls on 4th January 2018. It has also
been suggested by the ministry of AYUSH to conduct a National Seminar, well in advance, as a preamble to
the grand Siddha Day celebration. His role in various fields will be explored through this 2-day National
Seminar on “The Glory of Siddhar Agathiyar and his Contribution to Siddha System of Medicine”. The
Information obtained through the deliberations of this 2-day seminar will highlight the greatness and
magnificence of Siddhar Agathiyar.
Agathiyar
The origin of Siddha medicine dates back to the
Sangam and Pre-Sangam period (before 2nd century
BC). Agathiyar is an enlightened personage who has
made contribution not only for Siddha medicine but
also for Tamil language and grammar. Ancient
literatures/ writings reveal that he was the founder of
the Tamil language and Grammar. “Agathiyam”, said
to have been written by sage Agathiyar was the base
literature for Tholkappium. However, the literature is
yet to be found.
According to one school of thought he was born
in a mud-pot (Kumbam). Hence he was also named
kumba muni. Another name is kurumuni, as he was
very short. He is also called Vandamizh Mamuni,
Kumba Mamuni, Santha Nool Tamizh thanthavar,
Kuriyon, Paithanmizh Munivar, Arivan,
Muththandamizh, Thermuni, Thamizhar Koman,
Aathimuni. Agathiyar married Lopamuthirai, daughter
of Vidharppa and led a happy life. Pulathiyar was his
only son according to literatures. He attained Samadhi
at Anantha Sayanam (Thiruvananthapuram) In some
literature, it has been said that he attained Samaadhi
at Kumbakonam.
Many historical evidences and events speak
about Agathiyar’s life and his accomplishments.
Agathiyar is said to be many in number and people
heading different forms of Art and Medicine are called
in general Agathiyar. Agathiyar of Mahabharatha,
Ramayana and Agathiyar who lived during Lord Siva’s
marriage were all different and belong to various
periods.
In the name of Agathiyar many works/subjects
such as Alchemy, Medicine, Yogam, and Astrology
have come out.. But all the books are not by the
original author. In all probability, the works written by
different persons at different periods of time seem
to have been attributed to Agathiyar to invest them
with dignity and antiquity.

Literary Research and Documentation Department
A Literary Research Unit was started by the Government of India at Saraswathi Mahal Library
Campus, Thanjavur in the year 1964, as an important milestone in the development of the Siddha
system. In 1971, one more Literary Research Unit was started at Government Siddha Medical College,
Palayamkottai. They have made wonderful collections of traditional manuscripts and very old Siddha
printed books dealing with treatment of ailments, from the traditional physicians all over Tamil Nadu.
In 1979, these units were merged to form Literary Research and Documentation Department (LRDD) at
Central Research Institute for Siddha, Chennai. In April 2007, the LR & DD was merged with CRIS,
Chennai-106. The Mandate of this department is to carry out literary research.
