BC Election 2017Candidate forum at the Ridge

The writ has not yet been dropped, as of this writing, but we are all anticipating a provincial election to be held as scheduled on Tuesday, May 9th. ARRA is pleased to invite Arbutus Ridge residents to a Candidates Forum in the Arbutus Room, so that Ridge voters have a convenient opportunity to meet the candidates for election in the Cowichan Valley Electoral District, and ask them directly about their positions on a variety of issues. Mark your calendar for 2:00 p.m. in the Arbutus Room on Thursday April 20th. Please sign up in advance at the Bulletin Board in the Activity Centre. Each resident is allowed to bring a guest; in that case, please record your guest’s name on the signup sheet at least three days in advance so that Security can be provided with a list of names of visitors, and we have a realistic idea of numbers. The Agenda and “Rules of Engagement” for the Forum will be posted on the ARRA bulletin board and the ARRA webpage in advance of the event. Attendees will also have an opportunity to mingle with the candidates over coffee after the Forum. We hope to see you there! If you are new to BC or have recently moved to the Ridge and are not certain if you are on the Voters’ List for the May 2017 provincial election, go to elections.bc.ca/ovr or call 1-800-661-8683 to register to vote or to update your information. Circle on the RidgeHopes and Fears“Uncertainty in the pressure of vivid hopes and fears is painful, but must be endured if we wish to live without the support of comforting fairy tales.” - Bertrand Russell

Please join us on Wednesday, April 12th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Rose Room to share your hopes and fears. Many of our wise women have lived through difficult times. What has worked for you in these situations? Who do you turn to? How have you endured? When does fear raise its ugly head? Where do you find hope? If you know any women who would like to join our circle discussions please invite them to come along.

The Wine ClubSaison Market Vineyard Returns! If all the Saison fans out thereBought a ticket to our next affair,To guarantee sufficient spaceWe’d have to hire BC Place!

At our next event, in the Arbutus Room at 7:00 p.m. on Friday April 21st, the Wine Club is delighted to welcome Saison Market Vineyard to Arbutus Ridge for the second time. Their visit two years ago was a sell out and a memorable event for all who attended. Saison is well known to many Ridge residents. Nestled in the pastoral rolling hills northeast of Duncan, it is a remote little piece of paradise and the cozy European style bakery and coffee shop has proven wildly successful with Cowichan Valley residents. empty table is worth waiting for to enjoy the fabulous sweet and savoury baking and garden fresh soups; the convivial buzz of happy customers; and the glorious views overlooking the Saison vineyards. When not crafting their delectable banquet of gourmet foods for weekend customers, owners Frédéric Desbiens and Ingrid Lehwald are busy producing high quality vitis vinifera grapes, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Seigerrebe, on their sunny slopes for provision to local vintners. On this occasion, unusually for the Wine Club, we will be comparing three vintages of Pinot Gris and two of Pinot Noir, rather than multiple different wines. An entertaining and very knowledgeable presenter, Frédéric will guide us through the various factors that influence the quality of wines from one year to the next, and how quality of a particular vintage is assessed. The different vintages will be paired with a selection of Saison’s fabulous appetizers and a small sweet to conclude. Since the difference in each year’s vintage can be subtle, we suggest that this may be an evening to forego the usual pre-activity ‘bring your own’ beverages such as moonshine, scotch and homemade elderberry wine! Tickets for this event are $30 for members and are available at the Activity Centre commencing 8:00 a.m. Monday, April 3rd. This event is expected to be a sell-out so please purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment. If there are any unsold tickets remaining on Monday, April 17th, ticket sales will open to members’ guests and non-member Ridge residents for $35 each. All ticket sales will close at the end of the day Tuesday, April 18th, to allow our presenters adequate

time for planning and preparation. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. (and not a minute before!). Don’t miss this opportunity for some intriguing and informative wine tastings and pairings and, no doubt, shared anticipation of pleasant mornings dining on the sunny deck at Saison, Cowichan’s piece of Provence! Producers Debra Bateman and Greg Nuspel will be entering this documentary in four Canadian Film Festivals in 2017 and 2018. The rule of Film Festivals is that no submissions are allowed

to have any public release prior to the festivals but our ARPAS performers are entitled to one

private showing. We are calling this our “Oscars Night at the Ridge.” Dress will be as formal as you can create. Costumes and wigs are always welcome. Wine and appetizers will be served prior to the showing. This private showing will be on Saturday, April 15th, at 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Arbutus Room. Bible BabesBook ClubBible Babes is a book club for women at the Ridge, where we look at spiritual issues in life in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere. This spring we’ve been looking at some key questions, and continue our series with the Alpha book and DVD, hosted by British author Nicky Gumbel. We’ve been happy to have some new guests as well as the “usual suspects”. It’s been fun to explore spiritual questions and to hear from each member in a casual, comfortable atmosphere.

A Great Opportunity!Council have decided to take a 3 year lease on the empty Hanjin freighter moored closest to us to provide more meeting and major event space to residents while the village renewal project is being considered. The location couldn’t be better as it’s easily accessible to boaters, kayakers and swimmers.

Council are asking for volunteers with any metalwork experience to help with the window fitting, and for anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work painting very large spaces. Strata will pay for liability insurance for ARMA members interested in using their boats as water taxis. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Activity Centre. Potpourri: Malta, SardiniaAnd CorsicaPlease join Gwyneth Kingham on Wednesday, April 19th, in the Arbutus Room at 2:00 p.m., for an informative and interesting talk on travelling within Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Malta, Sardinia and Corsica are all very different, and each has its own charm. A visit to any one of them will make you want to return again soon. The importance of Malta, the smallest of the three islands at only 316 square kilometres, belies its size. It is strategically placed at the narrow passage between the eastern and western Mediterranean. Ancient and Mediaeval empires have each left their mark here, and in World War II it suffered greatly as it was a strategic target of both Germany and Britain. What is truly remarkable on Malta are the ancient temples which dot the landscape, all built between 3500 and 2500 BC. Sardinia is the largest of the three islands and is mostly rural with only a few well-preserved old towns. The narrow streets of these towns are, however, well worth exploring. Like Malta, Sardinia has a very long history with Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman ruins along its coasts. Among the most remarkable ruins are its 1600 to 1000 BC inland defensive towers called ‘nuraghes’ which hint at a violent past. Napoleon’s home island of Corsica is a hiker’s paradise and features the GR20, a challenging backpacker’s trail running the length of the island’s mountainous spine. Almost half of the land is

Understanding Knits and Purls;Knitting Kept SimpleLet me introduce myself. My name is Willina and I am a knitter. It has taken many years for me to be able to say that. Many of us are able to knit but not so many can claim to be knitters. I have taken many classes and workshops both in Canada and the USA, and I’ve spent many hours knitting, then tink’ing to learn a new technique or skill or to get something just right. I would now like to share my knowledge with you. I am offering a wide variety of technique workshops and project based classes in cable, Intarsia, Fair Isle and K1b to name just a few. Come and meet me in the Arbutus Room on Thursday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. to get a firsthand look at my work and the possibilities that your knitting

Introducing Addie ClarkInstructor forRed CrossCertification CourseAddie Clark has spent 15 years in the medical field providing patient care, teaching, and field hospital management. Addie started with providing patient care in the pre-hospital field in various parts of Alberta. She also worked with St. John Ambulance in Central Alberta as an instructor and coordinator for their Community Medical Services at events. She was hired to manage their volunteer program of first responders, establish basic field hospital systems, and look after their Occupational Health and Safety Program. With St. John Ambulance she became very involved in disaster planning with local municipalities’ Emergency Services and RCMP to implement Emergency Preparedness Plans. During her time in Alberta she took additional education in Disaster Planning, Occupational Health & Safety and Hospital Administration. With Alberta’s history of floods, tornadoes and blizzards, she gained valuablefield experience in the implemen-tation of on-site disaster services.

In 2012 she moved back to the Island to be closer to her family and friends. She continued to work in the medical field by starting with part-time teaching and volunteering with the local branches of St. John Ambulance. She taught first aid and helped train volunteers with the First Responder program. There she met her husband Sam who at the time was also volunteering with St. John Ambulance. Sam is currently a Red Cross Instructor and owner of Island Safety, an RCMP Auxiliary officer, and Cowichan Search and Rescue Ropes Team Member. Together, Sam and Addie work to develop specialized training for community groups that are specific to their needs, such as the Arbutus Ridge Courses. Addie has recently taken on a career opportunity that blended all of her medical field experience and management background, which provided unlimited resources for her to continue to develop her services. She joined the Capital Physicians Group

(CPG), originally a home support business based out of Victoria, which has expanded with a new division called the “Community Health Network”. She manages and promotes their company as a whole, including the marketing for Home Support Services. Under the Community Health Network Division of CPG, she runs her field hospitals and teaches community health courses. Island Safety and the Community Health Network Div. of CPG work together in providing training, equipment and supplies to conduct community courses such as the Arbutus Ridge CPR/AED and Trauma Injury I and II for disaster preparedness instructed by Addie and Sam.

The luncheon will include soup or salad, 1/2 turkey or tuna salad sandwich, dessert and tea/coffee at a cost of $17 including taxes and gratuity. We have asked Richard Ingle, the new General Manager to join us for lunch, and we have asked him to give us a brief review of course etiquette. We have had several members ask what to do in certain situations and Richard has agreed to answer these questions. Yearly dues of $20 will be collected at the luncheon. Please bring exact change if you can, both for lunch and for dues. A signup sheet will be posted in the Ladies Locker Room for lunch

and/or golf or you can email Ruby Zimmer at [email protected]. When signing up for lunch, please indicate if you would like the turkey or tuna salad sandwich and either the soup or salad. Please be sure to sign up or let Ruby know by Wednesday, April 26th. If you sign up and later find out you cannot attend, please call Michael at the restaurant to cancel at least 48 hours in advance to ensure not being charged for lunch. If anyone would like to start golfing earlier than Wednesday, May 3rd, I have booked two tee times starting at 2:00 p.m. for Wednesday, April 19th and Wednesday, April 26th. Call the pro shop and let them know you are part of the Ladies 9 Hole Group and you will be able to golf for $23 which is the special rate we get for our group on Wednesday. Also, if you are a member of the Ladies 9 Hole Group, you can play any weekday (Monday through Thursday) after 4:30 p.m. for the special rate. We will begin regular play on Wednesday, May 3rd. The following is our new executive for this year. Joan Bauer is the new treasurer. Ruby Zimmer, Andrea Pennells and Rosa Johnston are doing the draw. Gale Ellis is in charge of interclub. Rhonda Unicume will be your team captain.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the kick-off luncheon on Wednesday, May 3rd. Rhonda [email protected]

From the Library

THANKS TO OUR WEEKLY VOLUNTEERS who help to keep the place organized so others can find books they’d like! Thanks to our patrons who return books to the plastic bins and who check the publication year is 2005 or newer, when donating books!

Did you know:

- our library is run on the ‘honour system’, so residents can borrow a book for as long as they’d like?- our library books are all donations, but we only accept books published after 2005?- our most popular books are fiction, so most of our shelves are dedicated to fiction, leaving little room for non-fiction?- our ‘Library Ladies’ are volunteers who donate some time every week to re-shelve books that have been returned to the library, shelve suitable donations and since many donations are older than 2005, must take hundreds of older unsuitable books to other charitable drop off locations?

Not sure what to do with older books? There are many places that will gladly accept older books, such as thrift stores, used bookstores, and groups doing fundraising, but if you are looking for an easy

From Dave Coulter

I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND a personal Thank You to all of the residents and staff who have made me feel extremely welcome in my new role as General Manager at Arbutus Ridge. I have had the fortune to meet some of you personally in my ‘walk arounds’ and do intend to eventually meet each of you. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any observations or questions regarding The Ridge. I will do my best to provide a satisfactory answer or resolve.Dave CoulterGeneral Manager

Operations UpdateHello all. As I write this, I wonder if spring is really going to come this year. I hope that the snow has finally melted away and somewhere there are flowers blooming! Springtime brings spring-cleaning and the need to dispose of unwanted clutter and un-needed papers we collected over the winter season. Arbutus Ridge will be having a paper shredding day on Friday, May 12th, to assist you with disposal of any old

files you may have. We can also provide garbage tags at $2 each to remove unwanted clutter, small enough to fit into your garbage bin. Please see Marjorie in the Activity Center for details. Springtime is also when gardening enthusiasts look to their gardens and yards with renewed hope and expectations. Remember if you are planning to do major landscaping renovations this season you do need an application before proceeding. The applications are available on line or in the Operations Office. Just a reminder for the folks with irrigation systems. A CVRD and SP 1601 bylaw requires backflow preventers on all irrigation systems. Please have your backflow preventers checked and serviced as required. I hope whatever your passion, you are able to go outdoors and enjoy the springtime weather. Do not overdo it, just take you time and smell the flowers that I am positive will come soon! Be careful and be safe. The operations office is open for from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays to assist with various change applications. Dave CoulterGeneral Manager

A Walk to Remember withCowichan HospiceIt is hard to believe that almost a year has passed since the last Hike for Hospice. Now it is time to start preparing for this year’s hike which will take place at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, May 7th, at Providence Farm. Although I am currently out of town, I will be back by Wednesday, April 5th, in time to get our list of participants and donations ready for this very worthy cause.

“At Cowichan Hospice, we have the opportunity to provide support and resources. Our

palliative supports include one-to-one emotional support, resources from our lending library, wellness treatments, home visits, and a visiting team at CDH. If you find yourself possibly facing a palliative journey, we invite you to call us at 250-701-4242. Cowichan Hospice services are available free of charge to anyone in the Cowichan region.”

It truly is appreciated if you can sign up early so that we can have our team ready for the organizers, making their arrangements. Marjorie will put a sign-up sheet on the notice board, and I hope to see that well used during April. We have always had a very good showing both in numbers of team members and amount of donations, so I look forward to submitting the same this year. For information on the Hospice Society in our neighbourhood, check www.cowichanhospice.org. If you are new to our area, this is a very special day to help raise

funds in order for the hospice society to be a comfort, support and help to any and all of us when we need it before, during and following the loss of someone close to us or for ourselves. This special day is a fun day with a hike in a beautiful area, either 2 km or 3 km (if you prefer to forgo this, no problem, it is the donation that is so valuable), there is a labyrinth, foot massages are available, entertainment, a very tasty BBQ is included, draw prizes for the largest team and best donations... we have won both in the past. You can email me now: [email protected] or phone 250-743-4743 after Wednesday, April 5th. I look forward to having you join us.Chris Sparrey

AHOY!Congratulations are in order to the residents of Strata 1601. Construction has started on our new Marina facility. Thanks are also in order. While much of the recognition for getting this project finished will go to those currently involved, this process goes back many years. A large number of people have donated a lot of time and endured a great deal of frustration to get the project to this point. To all of them go our sincere thanks. Some of you are probably thinking just what is this guy talking about, nothing looks different out on the water. Please remember that much of the facility will be constructed at PIM’s construction yard and moved onto our site when they are ready to install it. A detailed construction schedule should be available on our web site by now (check under major projects). However, to summarize I will list the item(s) and the projected start date with the completion date in brackets. First attenuator 20/2 (14/4), Second attenuator 15/4 (19/5), Dock D 19/5 (23/6), float B and C 24/6 (31/8). The existing propane tank wave attenuators will be removed around June 24th. From June 28th to July 6, some piles will be installed with the attenuators and Dock D. The remainder (piles, landing float, walkway floats and all services will start around July 27th and complete around Sept 7th. Improvements to the launch ramp (float installation) are also anticipated.

Pictures of the construction at the PIM yards will be posted and a camera will be installed at our Marina site so that real time pictures of the installation can be available on our great new web site. PIM will be installing a temporary dock at our site sometime around April 2nd, for resident use until installation of the new facility begins. It will have at least 300 lineal feet of moorage space. Further details will be made available on the web site. So keep your eyes on the developments and enjoy the facility once it is completed. Also thanks in advance for your patience.Gerry Manz

Request for volunteersThe Civil Works Committee (CWC) is looking for some additional membership and would ask any residents with a background in engineering, construction, utilities or maritime facilities to consider joining the Committee and sharing some of your knowledge and skills with the community. Meetings are normally held once a month. While full time membership is preferred we certainly will appreciate project by project assistance if that better meets your current life schedule or personal preferences. If you are interested please call Gerry Manz CWC chair at 250-929-5567Gerry Manz

It’s always fun to learn “the rest of the story” when interviewing volunteers to honour for their contribution to our community. I knew that John and Marilyn Znider enjoyed travelling, I had no idea they’ve spent so much time travelling on the water! They both spent their working career in Education. Marilyn started out with a Bachelor of Arts teaching music. Later she got a Masters in Special Education and found her passion. She spent the last 20 years of her teaching career as a program specialist and also working in the central school district office. John began his teaching career at the University of Saskatchewan but soon chose to move to teaching high school, which he thoroughly enjoyed and continued in both Yorkton, Toronto and then in Alberta. They both taught for 20 years in the Alberta Rocky View School Division before retiring and moving to their new home in Arbutus Ridge in 1994. Marilyn has been very active in our music community. She was a member of the Music Club serving on the executive including positions as the President and

Co-President. She has been involved in many of the summer musical productions most recently as performer and coordinator of the musical theatre numbers in the 2016 ARPAS production Good Vibrations. She has also led the Canada Day choir for about 15 years. She’s an ardent golfer and has been on the executive of the ladies golf club, including as Club Captain in 2008. Her volunteer contributions have also included serving on the executive of A.R.R.A. and A.R.E.P; on several Council committees and as a Strata Councillor for one term. She then spent three years on the Nominating Committee and most recently assisted with the initial Strategic Planning undertaking in early 2012. John was actively involved with the Marine Association for 20 years. He was hands-on in maintaining the facility and helped to rebuild the dock as well

as being instrumental in getting water to the dock. He helped draft the constitution for the association and served as President for several years. His latest volunteer endeavor was as co-leader for the first Strategic Planning exercise in 2012. He was involved in leading the exercise itself and continued his involvement over a three-year period. Their travel stories are amazing! They boated for over 20 years, not just around this area, although they certainly explored the local waters! In 2000, John sailed across the ocean, leaving from Fort Lauderdale and arriving in Portugal 45 days later. Marilyn, who firmly believes “nothing goes through weather like a 747” flew to Spain and met him there and they spent three months sailing along the Spanish coast and exploring the Balearic Islands. Other favourite sailing trips have included the Greek Islands and Turkey, the inter-coastal waterways in the U.S., around the Caribbean and just a few years ago, John, along with Stu Brannon, Jim Armstrong and Don Johnston sailed from here to Juneau, Alaska and home again.

They have spent time travelling in Australia and New Zealand, Ecuador, and China and South Asia. They’ve travelled extensively in the U.S. and it was on an early trip in California where they saw a community similar to Arbutus Ridge that helped them decide to build their retirement dream home here. John and Marilyn found their little piece of paradise, and have been two of the many residents who give generously of their time. Thank you both for all that you’ve done and continue to do. Singing J U S T for the fun of it!

Most people already know the great benefits to mental and physical health of music and singing, and this information has been in the news for a few years now! There are a number of good scientific studies that have proven this also. I know about the wonderful choir at Arbutus Ridge, and we

enjoyed their concert during Christmas… fantastic! My husband and I live here at Arbutus Ridge, and I was wondering if there would be an interest in Singing Together just for fun? No note reading necessary, just singing songs from the sixties or earlier, no homework or studies, anyone can join. This is not to perform anywhere… only singing right here in the Arbutus Room where the piano is, or just come to listen. I was thinking of trying this out, once or twice a month, during an afternoon. The first afternoon I have reserved is Wednesday, April 12th at 2:00 p.m. in the Arbutus Room. I would love to see you there, we can sing and talk about another date to reserve if we find that we like to participate in this activity. In the past, I have been involved working with children, and also with adults who were new immigrants to Canada, and they were in the process of learning

a new language. This proved to be a very helpful and easy tool in “learn by singing” group, adapting and settlement. People came and shared their memories, happy or sad... with special songs, we sometimes even learned songs in other languages! I started singing with residents of a retirement home and learned a lot of older songs this way, it was so much fun! I am not a professional in this field, but I am able to play the piano (in my own way). I know singing is great, and I love music. This is just an idea, and I would love to hear from you. Please contact me at [email protected] de Groot

CALLING ALL

Village Centre Renewal Project UpdateWhen our Community voted to purchase the Town Hall building and the adjacent vacant lot, Council stated that they would be looking for input from you, the owners, to determine the best use of those lots to serve our community. To help you visualize the possibilities, and start the discussion, in December a large-scale artist concept plan was installed next to the postal kiosk. The Strategic Planning Committee has been working with pertinent committees of Council

to ensure we have considered all viable options. We have started discussions with some of the clubs and organizations that utilize the facilities and hope to get more input as we go along. In addition, we have been working with The Jensen Group of Architects, who specializes in design of commercial buildings. We now have a conceptual plan that needs to be taken to the next step. Information will be presented to owners at Town Hall meetings in April prior to presenting a resolution for the development and revitalization of the Village Centre at our next AGM on Wednesday, June 21st, 2017. The Village Centre renewal project is envisioned to happen in phases. By doing the revitalization in phases we can make the best use of our Contingency Reserve Fund while ensuring our continued financial strength.

Phase One: Consists of moving all administrative functions - including Activities - to the Town Hall building. After taking into account the views of some owners who expressed their opinion about the end use of the Town Hall building, the position of the community identifies support that this move is in the best interest of the community with significant benefits. The immediate advantages of this move are as follows:Cost Savings: The Town Hall building has been used as an office building by Pemberton Real Estate for a number of years. Keeping it as an office building is by far the most economical option, requiring the least amount of renovation/construction.Synergy: Having all staff in one building. This will eliminate the inefficient “silos” which now exist with staff spread over three buildings. The result will be improved staff communications and better customer service for all owners.Separation: No more intermingling of staff and owner facilities.Utilization: A conference/meeting room in the lower level of the Town Hall will allow the Rose Room and Craft Room to be utilized by the owners exclusively. Phase Two: This phase can only be undertaken after Phase one is complete. The exercise room will be almost double in size fulfilling a long-expressed desire of Owners for more space and exercise equipment. The wood working shop area will be made more accessible and safer with improved electrical and mechanical systems with a modern dust extraction system. The library will move to the former Activity area on the ground floor, eliminating stairs and

allowing better accessibility to all owners. The kiln can be moved to its own room, which will enhance operating safety.Hot tub upgrade and mechanical room.Mechanical and electrical upgrades to both existing activities buildingsPhases three to six: which are still in the very preliminary stages of planning will consider the questions of a new swimming pool, tennis courts and perhaps most importantly, a new Community Building (6000 sq. ft.). This building will take advantage of the outstanding location of lot 62 to provide not only much needed additional meeting room space (Arbutus Room) that will accommodate large scale social events, but when complete, a world class view from

the new Arbutus Room of Satellite Channel. This later plan has been a dream for many of us but as with all dreams, can only start if we take the first steps. The Strategic Planning Committee is counting on your support to make Arbutus Ridge the envy of stratas across British Columbia. Prepared by the Strategic Planning Committee.Brian CarterChairman

Dating back 2000 years, the art of Ukrainian Easter Egg Painting is called Pysanky. It originated in the Ukraine Region of Poland, Romania and Russia. The art was passed down through the generations by women, their daughters and granddaughters who would often meet for weeks prior to Easter to prepare as many as 60 eggs each. The eggs were exchanged and used for gifts, rituals and good tidings. Each egg is uniquely designed and the symbols on them are key to the intended wishes. Chickens represent fertility; wheat sheaves are a symbol of good crops; stars represent good fortune; a cross is for Christianity blessings etc. Raw eggs are used, along with a special hand stylus that holds warmed bees wax for drawing on the eggs to preserve a series of dyes that create the colours. After the eggs are complete, the wax is removed to reveal a magical art piece and then they are varnished to preserve the egg. The end result is a beautiful unique work of art that can be kept safely for years. It was a great way to celebrate an ancient art form, gather with some gal pals and celebrate spring and Easter. The workshop was lead by Barbara Duewel and Brenda Hayter.

Supplies and courses in this art form are available from the Ukrainian Club in Victoria located off Douglas Street. Brenda Hayter

SECURITY SNAPSHOTUpdate on the Marine Facility: PIM has begun construc-tion of the new marina facility. Council will be travelling to their facility on Monday, March 27th, to view the initial phase. The attenuators will be in Phase 1 and are intended to protect infrastructure. PIM anticipates the initial project work at Arbutus Ridge Marina - pile insertion - to commence end of April. The final float delivery and secure is estimated as a seven month project. In the interim PIM has obtained float structures which will act as a temporary marina dock. It will provide approximately 300+ feet of lineal boat moorage for residents. The temporary dock is expected to be in location by end of April or early May. Please review the Owner’s Manual, Section “E” 20, for all the rules as to how many days you’re allowed at the dock before you have to leave. You must be away for three nights between stays, but the length of stay varies depending if it is off season, (six nights) or peak season, (four nights).

If you have any specific questions about the dock facilities please contact the Arbutus Ridge Marine Association. Vacation Information forms. Thanks to everyone completing them; it does make a difference in doing our job. One more thing needs to be done to complete the cycle and that is, you need to notify security that you have returned. It is essential if we are have an accurate picture of what is taking place in Arbutus Ridge, should this information be needed in an emergency. We have noticed that there are more and more residents leaving their garage doors open overnight. We note this in a log, and if it’s open for three nights we will notify the resident and see if there is a problem. This is a very unsafe practice and an easy way to lose valuables. If there is a reason that you require leaving the door open overnight please give us a call. One less thing for us to worry about. Thanks.

“Best of the best... Our top pick from 2016”

-BBC Top Gear

This is an accounting of one Canadian man’s efforts to conquer the world’s highest peaks. Gabriel Filippi is undoubtedly one of Canada’s most skilled mountaineers. As a young boy growing up in Lac Megantic, he lived in fear of drowning. A close encounter in a childhood swimming pool left him terrified of the depths, but he had no idea that it was the heights of this world that would eventually call him – and threaten his life

over and over again. In the course of 20 years spent scaling the highest peaks in the world, Filippi has repeatedly cheated death. He had set a personal goal to climb the two highest peaks in each of the continents. From a Taliban attack on a mountainside in northern Pakistan that felled ten of his companions to the deadliest disaster in Everest’s history, he has survived again and again. He is also one of

the few Canadians to have scaled Everest via both faces. But survival comes with a price. No climber returns from a summit the same person as when he began his ascent. Sometimes the alteration is physical but more often it is buried within. He leaves behind his family including a young daughter, on many occasions. Not to mention the impact on one’s profession and one’s bank account. In a sport where it costs anywhere from $65,000 per climb, the financial hit is far from the only limiting factor. The Escapist is an unflinching account of extreme feats and devastating loss. It is a book marked by adventure and tragedy. I have read several books about and authored by these driven mountain climbers. I have also read about it from the other side: the partners they leave behind and how they cope with and try to understand their loved ones.

One such book was written by a woman from Protection Island near Nanaimo, who after losing her fiancé to Mt. Everest tours the continent interviewing women who have partners who climb incessantly despite the huge risk factors. A Call for Book Reviews

Over the past 12 years I have written more than 100 book reviews for Ridge Talk. I took time off when Vera and I spent a year teaching at Guangxi University in China and Dick Gold graciously filled in. While I enjoy reading books and even writing the book reviews, I would like to suggest that other residents also get involved. There are a number of book clubs on the Ridge and many, many readers. You all have likes, dislikes and opinions. I welcome you to share them. If you would like to do a book review you can send your write-up either to Marjorie or myself. We are looking for reviews of around 600 words. It would be wonderful to have a pool of reviews to choose from for upcoming issues of Ridge Talk.

Easter Eggs - A Brief Historyfrom wikipedia.org

Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given out to celebrate the Easter festival. The custom of the Easter egg originated in the early Christian community of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion. As such, for Christians, the Easter egg is a symbol of the empty tomb. The oldest tradition is to use dyed chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute eggs made from chocolate, or plastic eggs filled with candy such as jellybeans. The Easter Bunny is a popular legendary anthropomorphic Easter

gift-giving character analogous to Santa Claus in American culture. Many Americans follow the tradition of coloring hard-boiled eggs and giving baskets of candy. On Easter Monday, the President of the United States holds an annual Easter egg roll on the White House lawn for young children. Since the rabbit is a pest in Australia, the Easter Bilby is available as an alternative. Easter eggs are a widely popular symbol of new life in Poland and other Slavic countries’ folk traditions.
