According to the records of word searches on Google, the phrase
‘Carpe Diem’ is looked up more than any other phrase. I wonder why
there is such a fascination with the phrase. Perhaps it’s something to do
with the pervading mood of society which suggests we should seek all
the pleasure we can and accumulate as much as we can while we
can. Why work when you can play?! More positively, those who adopt
the ‘carpe diem’ take on life may do so from more altruistic motives –
why take when there’s an opportunity to give?
The usual understanding of the phrase ‘carpe diem’ is ‘seize the day’
but this meaning actually isn’t literal enough for some Latin Scholars.
'Carpe' translates literally as 'pluck', with particular reference to the
picking of fruit, so a more accurate rendition is 'enjoy the day, pluck
the day when it is ripe'. A more extended meaning suggests, ‘Pluck the
day, trusting as little as possible in the future’.
I love this idea and I think it echoes how Jesus would have us live. When he commanded his disciples to
‘Go… and make disciples’ he wasn’t suggesting that they should hang around for a while to think
about. The task was urgent!
Paul, writing to the Christians at Ephesus suggests we should, ‘Make the most of every opportunity for
doing good in these evil days.’ To the Colossian Christians he writes, ‘Live wisely among those who are
not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity.’ That’s a real challenge to my tendency to hold
back and procrastinate. And yet, I know how God can bless and use me when I take the opportunities
he gives me, even the small and seemingly insignificant ones.
My husband and I work on a street project in Birmingham called City Pastors which serves the city’s
night entertainment hub at the weekends. A while back we got talking to a girl who was about to go
on a rehab programme to get off Methadone which she had been taking following years of drug
addiction. As she shared her story, we listened intently. Her face lit up as we suggested that we would
pray for her during her rehab programme.
As we were about to leave her, I sensed the Lord prompting me - ‘Pray for her right now! Seize the
moment!’ At that moment, two of her friends arrived to take her home, but the moment wasn’t lost. All
three of them bowed their heads and placed their hands on their chests, as if absorbing into their hearts
every word of the prayer. In their brokenness there was such openness. It was a God-given moment
which had to be seized there and then. We believe the seeds of His love were sown in their hearts at
that moment and we’re praying for a chance to meet this girl again.
Throughout this publication, you’ll be challenged again to ‘seize the day’ or ‘pluck the day while it is
ripe’. You’ll read testimonies of those who have seen God work in amazing ways in their lives as they
have done so. This edition of the Short-term Service Directory invites you to take the opportunities it
presents. There’s probably more information than you can take on board in one hit, but why not ask
God to help you seek out and take the opportunities he is giving you to serve him here and now and in
the future? You’ll be amazed at what might happen.

6 why go?
carpediem
‘Now would be agood time to praythat we arrive safely!’These were the pilot’swords as the tropicalstorm blew our six-seater Cessna outacross the AtlanticOcean.
I confess that wasn't our only
prayer as my wife and I
attempted to live long enough
to start a two-year stint of
missionary service. ‘O God, why
did you bring us out here to die?’
may also have gone through my
mind!
Anyway, having landed safely,
we arrived at our new home,
wet, hot and frantically
processing the new sights,
sounds and smells – no
orientation can prepare you! We
gratefully went to bed, tucked in
mosquito nets and settled our
heads on pillows that smelt
damp in a way that only pillows
that have done time in sub-
Saharan Africa can smell.
Exhausted and relieved to be
alive, we drifted to sleep.
Seizethe day:
7why go?
Until we heard the shooting ... Raised in rural
Somerset, I hadn't been exposed to a great deal of
small-arms fire, so I’m not sure how I recognised it ...
Then I heard it again: ka-ka-ka-ka. I tried to leap out
of bed, only to rediscover the mosquito net. Pauline
and I groggily struggled to find our way out, but
eventually gave up. 'If this was our time to die, why
fight?' ... Then we heard the words of the Imam
calling local people to the five o’clock prayers, over
an old PA system that suffered from crackly, gunfire-
like static.
This was our introduction to short-term mission.
It’s a privilege to be asked to write for a magazine
so full of opportunities for the body of Christ to serve.
As you read these pages I hope you get a sense
that there is something for you to do, and that God
wants to take you and plant you somewhere.
I believe we, His people, His church, should be the
channels through whom God might speak His words
of comfort, hope, truth and love to this world ... Let's
seize the day! Because if we don't, who will?
Short-term mission has an increasing and important
impact on the growth of the kingdom.
In the past, the focus of short-term mission was for
people to support and augment long-term workers
with long-term vision. Teachers, medical staff,
administrative and clerical support made a vital
contribution to the continuation of work on the
Carpe diem: extending the Kingdom
8 why go?
mission field. This is still necessary and much valued
– but more and more in missions today, as in the
business world, organisations are having to re-
examine their strategies to integrate a generation
with a short-term or 'seasonal' pattern to life. This
gives much more freedom, to those committing to
shorter periods of time, to develop and pioneer
new work in new ways that may only have a very
short lifespan.
For example, in Asia WEC International is seeking to
develop strategies with short-term church planting
teams that focus on a specific area. The fruit from
this can then be picked up and developed by
those who are there longer term. In Africa we have
reading or book rooms which address the problems
of low levels of literacy. Someone with the right
gifting can, in a few months, significantly affect the
lives of many people.
Finding God’s ways to build short-term missions into
strategic kingdom initiatives, such that the longer-
term vision is greatly enhanced but not reliant on
them, is sometimes easier said than done. In WEC
we are seeking to reach out to unreached people
groups and communities, to incarnate Christ and
share stories of Jesus. To do this we need to build
relationships, interact with people, learn their
culture, their language, their traditions – all this
takes a long time. Nevertheless, we – and other
agencies – are all striving to create meaningful
projects, with clear short-term aims and
meaningful, satisfying outcomes, in the recognition
that short-term work 'is a strategy'.
Early in our time in Africa an older
missionary took me to one side and
shared something, in a way that only
older missionaries can: God had brought
me there not because of the things I was
going to do. He’d brought me because
of the things He wanted to do in me,
and through me.
There then followed two of the most
formative years that Pauline and I have
ever known. It was a period when
something broke inside me and I
understood for the first time that I was no
longer my own and that Jesus was Lord
of my life – in a real sense, not a
conceptual one. The thing I took from
this time was the need to serve God
above all else, to commit our lives to
doing what He wants to do, and to reap
the reward that comes from serving Him
and others.
Carpe diem: knowing Jesus
9why go?
Seize the dayAs you look around do you understand the times
in which you live? Can you perceive the hand of
Christ as He builds His church? Do you desire to
align yourself with what He is doing? Whatever He
is doing is for today, and for His people to get on
with ... Carpe diem!
Seizing the day is about taking every opportunity
that God presents. Not just to do things for Him,
but also to allow Him to work within us. That’s the
ultimate motivation and satisfaction: serving so
we know Jesus. This magazine is filled with
opportunities to seize and serve.
You are on a journey, and perhaps short-term
mission is the next step for you. It might lead to a
longer-term commitment to a particular ministry.
More importantly, I trust it will lead to a lifelong
commitment to know Christ, to love Him, to
worship Him and to express that by serving Him.
It is an awesome privilege to be a part of what
He's doing in the world. As you read, pray that He
will, by His Spirit, enlighten your hearts and minds
to His calling upon your lives!

John, along with his wife Pauline, are WEC
UK Directors. They were married in 1990
and have four children: Esther, Ollie, Joe
and Caitlin. They served with WEC as short-
termers from 1991 to 1993, eventually
joining the mission full-time in 1999. After
language study in France, they worked in
education of missionary children in
Senegal, West Africa. On returning to the
UK in 2005 they served as mission
mobilizers in the South West, before taking
up the role of UK Directors in 2007. They

generation and in the wider world who for
one reason or another have little
opportunity to hear the gospel.

I believe that to truly seize the
day is to worship God with your
whole being; to rejoice in Him, to
surrender each day to Him - to
lay your day at the feet of the
one who has given you the day.
God gave me 90 wonderful days
in Madagascar. I was able to
meet with a few Malagasy
women every week as they
sought to improve their
conversational English. These
women were so different to me,
but they became like my
Malagasy mothers. As we
studied the Bible it was amazing
to see their eyes open to the
truth of God’s word and be
changed. The last time our team
met them we thanked them for
being as mothers to us; yet how
special for them to say that we
were like mothers to them as we
taught them about God’s love.
What a special moment.
‘...to the Creatorof the day’When I hear the words ‘seize the day’ I am challenged to
consider its meaning. Maybe it’s to live like it’s your last day,
to do crazy things that you thought you’d never do. But I don’t
think that this is really what it means. In Psalm 118v24 it says
the words: ‘This is the day that the Lord has made...let us
rejoice and be GLAD in it.’
I also remember
going to an
orphanage and
telling the kids
about God’s
love shown to
them in Jesus on
the cross. What
an amazing
thing to see
these kids
respond and ask
God for
forgiveness. One
boy told his
teacher later
that day that he
had been ‘born
again’. Even though I had never
used those words, he knew that
he had been changed and
forgiven. How amazing to be
able to learn from these kids.
There were times spent learning
Malagasy with my neighbour. To
see how we were able to have
fellowship as sisters in Christ even
though we spoke different
languages was astonishing. We
were able to laugh and to sing
of God’s love together.
To ‘seize the day’ is to give your
all to the Creator of the day.

17why go?
Each summer young Christian men from around the
world join Sattha for a 22-day tour of six provinces
in Central Thailand, organising soccer tournaments
and doing evangelism.
‘Summer 2010 marked the tenth anniversary of
Sattha. Not only is Thailand gripped with football
fever 24/7, Team Sattha 2010 ran during
the final weeks of the World Cup – so you
can imagine how much added energy
there was in the villages we visited!
‘The Thai population have a real love
for Western culture, so to see 23
non-Thai men rolling into their
village in a huge coach really
got them excited. Everywhere
we went, people asked for our
autographs!
‘Since Sattha began, the
team has also visited schools,
teaching English and
performing sketches. This year,
some schools allowed the
team to come in and help,
while others were less keen.
‘Slowly and surely, the team’s
leaders have seen some
progress in people’s receptivity
to the gospel. This summer saw a
particularly big breakthrough
with our coach driver, P’Noi, and
his wife, P’Bee.
‘One morning they approached
Will, one of our leaders, and told
him they were unable to sleep
because a spirit kept visiting
them at night. The couple
believed this was the spirit of
their deceased child. They tried
to appease the spirit by going to
the temple and giving offerings,
but that didn’t work, so they asked
Will to pray for them, which he
promptly did.
‘The next morning P’Noi thanked
Will for his prayers, and said that
he and P’Bee had slept

in days. After that
P’Noi began to read a Bible
that had been given to him
by the team. He also began
studying it with Will. At the end
of the tour, P’Noi and his wife
asked the team for our
prayers, and said they hoped
that one day they would be
Christians like us.
‘What I’ve particularly come
home with is the sense of what
my strengths and gifts are, plus
a willingness to serve overseas
at some future date. For now,
however, it’s a case of seeking
God’s will for my life, and using
my experiences and renewed
passion for sharing the gospel
to serve my home church,
grow in my relationship with
God and deepen my
understanding of his word and
ways.
‘After all isn’t that part of what
mission’s about? To find what

use them to glorify his name in
the place where you will make
the most impact.’

20 why go?
I didn’t want to go to Africa.
Even though I’d been before
and enjoyed it, I didn’t feel I
needed to go back. I didn’t
want to leave my girls with
other families for that length of
time. I had deadlines and
commitments and there was
just too much to do.
In spite of my misgivings before
my trip, it was amazing. I
realized I was seeing things I
would never see anywhere
else – rugged beauty, amazing
wildlife, wonderful people.
Sometimes God takes us to
places we don’t want to go.
As I put that in the context of
this season of my life –
preparing to send my oldest
daughter off to college later in
the year – I realized that God
was going to show me things
that I would never be able to
experience any other way.
Of course, as God leads us on,
sometimes we experience
suffering and pain – through
serious illness, the death of a
child, when a spouse walks
away or when families are
separated by ‘greater’
commitments. This was the
case when Habakkuk cried
surprising me with His majesty,
beauty and power. But I know
that some of those places will
be difficult – requiring all the
faith I possess just to make it
from minute to minute. I pray
that I will be grateful for all of
the places God leads me,
realizing that the Sovereign Lord
is my strength. He makes my
feet like the feet of a deer. He
enables me to go to the
heights.
SometimesGod takesus to placeswe don’twant to go
out for relief from injustice. For a
time, the enemies of God
prevailed and by God’s doing,
His people were in a place they
didn’t want to be. Habakkuk
could have responded to this
revelation in a number of ways.
Not all might have been God-
honouring. Instead, he
concluded with a bold
statement of faith:
“Though the fig tree does not
bud and there are no grapes on
the vines, though the olive crop
fails and the fields produce no
food, though there are no sheep
in the pens and no cattle in the
stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord.
I will be joyful in God, my
Saviour. The Sovereign Lord is my
strength; he makes my feet like
the feet of a deer. He enables
me to go to the heights.”
Habakkuk 3:17-19.
I know that God is going to
continue to take me to some
places I don’t want to be. I pray
that most of those experiences
will be like my journey to Africa –
I realizedthat God
was going toshow me thingsthat I wouldnever be able toexperience any otherway.

21why go?
I became a Christian in my teens
whilst visiting an activity centre with
my youth group, so while I was
growing up that time away kept
coming back to me. I heard about
this centre through a friend, who
later became my wife! It’s situated
in a fairly remote area of Devon in
beautiful surroundings.
A church internship had given me
experience working with young
people, but I had never done
anything adventurous in the
outdoors. I joined the trainee
instructor team for a year. The work has involved
everything from a bit of housekeeping and kitchen
work to leading ‘assembly time’ with school groups
and helping lead outdoor activities. It’s been an
apprenticeship style of learning on the job which
I’ve really enjoyed. You watch others doing
assemblies and then after a week or two it’s your
turn to have a go and be mentored by someone
else. Then the reins are off and it’s amazing how
your confidence grows!
My faith has really
been helped
through the prayer
and Bible times we
have together as a
team. I have
spiritually become
more independent
through this process,
learning to trust God
more. There are
always
people to
talk with about
faith issues. It’s been
like having another family. A lot of the children
that come to stay at the centre watch your every
move. That’s the key witness – how the team
interact with each other. Then, after assembly
time, they often ask questions about everything
from heaven and hell to how God shows
compassion.
There’s just no experience to match a gap year.
I was in a protected, learning environment where
I was able to try things and explore, gaining
confidence all the time. It’s certainly been a full-
on time – emotionally and physically. I’m
considering what future ministry God is asking me
to get involved in now and how I can use one of
the skills I’ve picked up which is learning to work
with a diversity of people.
