PRINTED COLLECTIONS

Collection overview

A comprehensive collection of books on music, scores and periodicals, with material

from the 15th century to the present day. It covers primarily the music of Europe and the

Americas (North and South) from earliest times to the present with smaller sections on

the music of Africa and Asia, ethnomusicology, film music, popular music and various

forms of dance. The scores collection is especially strong in collected editions, histori-

cal sets and facsimile music manuscripts in addition to the substantial holdings of indi-

vidual loanable works. The collection as a whole is also noted for its strong foreign

language component, particularly French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Collection location

The Music Library is located in two separate areas on the 4th floor South Block. Reg-

ular (octavo) books are in the Goldsmiths Reading Room. All scores and (folio) books

are in the Middlesex South Reading Room.

The collection is arranged into 5 sections each according to the Dewey Decimal clas-

sification system. Each section is assigned a different code on the online catalogue:

Books have the location codeSHL oldsmiths’ Reading Room ML

Folio books have the location code Middlesex South Folio Books ML fol.

Scores have the location code Middlesex South ML M

Miniature scores have the code Middlesex South Gallery MIN SCORES ML mM

Oversize/Extra Large scores have the code Middlesex South Extra Large Scores

The Goldsmiths Reading Room arranges the octavo books with the Dewey sequence

starting on the left hand side of the room.

The Middlesex South Reading Room arranges the folio books, at the front of the Right

entrance of the Reading Room. After the folio books, the score sequence commences

on the left hand side and wraps around the reading room continuing into the Middle-

sex South Reading Room Gallery. The final sequence in the Gallery arranges the min-

iature scores.
