Shiloh News April 2020 • Volume 11 Issue 4

He is risen! Every year we celebrate Easter Sunday and

it is the most exciting Sunday morning of the year. One

survey I saw recently said Easter is the most celebrated

holiday in the United States. If you think

about it very long, you will guess what is

second but you might miss numbers

three and four. For those of us who are

fortunate enough to have living parents,

Mother’s Day is always celebrated. And

mothers who have passed are also

remembered, so I guess it makes sense

that Mother’s Day is the second most

celebrated holiday in America.

Memorial Day and Christmas are

numbers three and four, respectively.

I was surprised to see Christmas in the number four

spot. That time of year seems to have everyone

celebrating in some way. Maybe Memorial Day

weekend is more widely celebrated because it is spring.

But my question is, what are people celebrating? Is it

just a three-day weekend, or is it truly remembering

those who fought and died for the good of our nation

and the world?

It is refreshing to think about Easter as the most

celebrated holiday. Most businesses don’t take extra

time off for an extended weekend. So that makes it feel

like the celebration is still about the Resurrection. In the

huge family gatherings that happen at Easter for special

meals and time together, there is still someone who has

our Risen Savior on their mind.

For Easter to be more celebrated than Christmas, it

means people understand that the Resurrection is what

sets Christianity apart from all other religions. After all,

every founder of any religion

was born, but only Jesus

Christ rose from

being dead for

three days. There

is hope in that

fact which is almost hard to understand.

Jesus conquered death not only for Himself

but for all who follow Him.

This year, Easter is coming on what I hope

will be heels of the COVID-19 pandemic. This

means we all have a new opportunity at that

huge Easter gathering. It may be the first time large

families have been together for a long time. And people

may be thinking about life a

little differently than they used

to. When I think about this

pandemic, I am reminded of

the biblical promise that God

uses all things for the good of those who love Him. One

of the ways He may be using this disease, is slowing

people down enough to think about their own mortality.

When people are thinking about their own death, it is a

good time to share your story and how you have a risen

Savior.

This newsletter is coming out a couple of weeks ahead

of Easter during a time when we have been ordered to

stay at home for the protection of ourselves and others.

We are all praying for a rapid end to the pandemic. Let’s

also pray for ways to share the love, peace, and comfort

of Christ during this time and in those gatherings when

people are together again.

Sharing His Love,

Note: In last month’s newsletter, there was an article called

“Lentstagram – A Photo Meditation.” Those who chose to participate

would take a picture relating to the “word of the day” and reflect on

it. Below are two entries from Lucy Marshall:

A Letter from Lucy...

March 9, 2020 - Today's word is "hope." Yesterday was

a beautiful day, and Mark and I spent some time working

outside. Last fall before we moved, I

transplanted some of my rhubarb

from our old house to the new house.

I was hoping it would take root and

we would have rhubarb this summer

at our new home. And guess what!

That little red leaf that I found

yesterday is a rhubarb leaf! Signs of

spring are in the air reminding us that

God is at work in the world. He cares

about us and gives us so many

blessings. Hope springs anew when the plants begin to rise

from the earth and the trees begin to bud. And I can't wait

to see what He is going to do this year in our lives! I hope

not in the creation though, but in the One who created all

things! #lentstagam

March 16, 2020 - The word for today is "sin." I chose a

nail for my picture. Did you ever think about what really

held Jesus on that cross so long ago? After all, He is God

incarnate. Couldn't he have come

down from that cross whenever He

wanted to...if He had wanted to?

But He didn't. He chose to stay

and finish the work God had for

Him because He loves us THAT

MUCH! Our sin is what kept Him

there. He became our sin. God

couldn't even look on His Son at

that point. And did you ever think

about why he had to suffer so much before He was

crucified? The torture of the whip, the crown of thorns, the

spitting and hateful comments he endured...that is what

OUR SIN deserved! The cross was the worst kind of death

anyone could experience at that time. That is what we

deserved...but... "GOD so loved the world that He gave His

one and only son so that whoever believes in Him will not

perish, but have everlasting life." -John 3:16 (very

appropriate on 3-16, don't you think?) #lentstagram

The present state of affairs in our country has brought

to light the new term, “social distancing.” I would like

to suggest we look at this term from a different angle.

Many of us have been undergoing

drastic changes in our daily lives

that have opened up windows of

opportunity to spend time doing

things we normally don’t engage in

very often. This can be a good

thing! It can also be a snare!

Social distancing leaves us more

prone than before to engage in idle time. We live in an

era of information, entertainment, and technological

advancements the world has never seen. With extra

time and all these bells and whistles at our fingertips,

we need to be intentional with our use of all these

amenities. It’s easy to open an app and get sucked

into the vacuum of enticements that follow. One after

another, side streets of entertainment and shiny

attractions lure us into a frenzy of mind-boggling

things, many of which have no real purpose in life. As

a matter of fact, many of them are distractions and

temptations. They steal our time and at the end of the

day our “to do” list is left unchecked.

Even though we are socially distancing ourselves

from people, we also need to “socially distance”

ourselves from the snares of media and other forms

of “social” technology. I would suggest applying one

of my favorite “self-check” Bible verses to our use of

social media and the like. Philippians 4:8 says,

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever

things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever

things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever

things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if

there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these

things.” Sounds very intentional to me!

Social media is a great tool to keep us in touch with

far away friends and family. I love perusing pictures of

loved ones on their daily adventures. It gives me a

sense of connectivity that I normally wouldn’t

experience, but without being intentional, it can lead

to political arguments, sensuality, lewd jokes,

senseless advertising, and so much more… Maybe

we can use our time to “clean out” the garbage and

even block some of our not so positive friends as to

uphold Philippians 4:8 in our social media.

I would also suggest we set parameters on our actual

time spent on devices in general. What is acceptable

for you? One hour a day? Two? Three? According to

emarketer.com, the average adult in the US spends

about six and a half hours a day behind either a TV or

mobile device! Just think... many jobs require even

more screen time.

Okay, so the time spent is definitely an

issue for some of us, but what about that

Bible verse? Philippians 4:8… tells us to

be intentional about exposing ourselves

to positive content. Why don’t we ask

ourselves if what we watch on TV,

Netflix, or YouTube passes the

Philippians 4:8 test?

I’ve always been humored by the labels on video

games and movies that state, “for mature audiences

only.” What is mature about excessive violence,

vulgar language, and/or nudity? Really, how does any

of that bring us true satisfaction or a sense of

fulfillment? It creates an ungodly focus and directs our

energies toward the world. Psalm 101:3 says, “I will

set no wicked thing before my eyes…” and Job 31:1,

reads “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look

lustfully at a young woman.” Placing some of the

commonly accepted content before us leads to a sub-

par standard of God’s calling for His followers.

With all this being said, why don’t we utilize this

“social distancing” by playing cards, board games,

checkers, etc. (with those in our household of

course)?.. What about landscaping, crafting,

organizing, reading (a real book with actual pages),

cooking, baking, building, sewing, painting, drawing,

talking, studying, cleaning, exercising, walking, hiking,

jogging, or hammocking? The one thing we can all do

that will give us true fulfillment is prayer and reading

God’s word. Just think where we’d be spiritually if we

replaced even half our screen time with that!

I don’t know about you, but social distancing from

people is hard enough, but social distancing from the

social “snares” of media is even harder! Let’s make a

covenant with our minds and hearts to be intentional

with our time and the content of what we put before

our eyes during the uncertain days ahead. After all,

the only certain thing I can think of is the coming of

Christ! I want to be ready; how about you?
