Life/Writing Career Silverstein was an American poet, singer-songwriter,

musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children’s books.

He was born in Chicago, and was writing by the time we was 12. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and went on to attend the Art Institute of Chicago.

He made cartoons in the military. Then he was introduced to an editor who said he should write for children. Many of his books were poems and drawings.

  Shel Silverstein passed away on May 10, 1999 from a heart attack in Key West, Florida.
