Biography

Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930

Began writing when he was 12Enjoyed playing outside but had no athletic

abilityEnlisted in the army when he was 20Served in Korea and JapanBecame a cartoonist for Stars & Stripes

Biography

When he got out of the Army, he begandrawing cartoons for magazines such as Look and Sports Illustrated

During the 1950s, Silverstein began to write and explore with music

Published his own books of cartoons Recorded his first album, Hairy Jazz

(1959) Made more than 12 albums

Biography

In 1963 he met Ursula Nordstrom who encouraged him to write children’s books.

The Giving Tree has been translated into more than 30 languages because it is so popular and the theme is widely discussed.

This book was originally rejected because they did not think it would be successful

He found somebody to publish it, and this book became his most popular piece of work.
