insight “We bought the property 10 years ago, when it was in the process of being built,” says Tom. “We were attracted

by its large garden plot and its open views, and because we could

change the layout of the house and tailor it to our requirements.

So, we altered the ground floor layout of the main house, creating

a through lounge from front to back by leaving out a partition wall

for a study. The current study was originally intended as a family

room; we had its open plan archway to the kitchen blocked off

and had a doorway put in from the hall.”

“Two of the double bedrooms already had en suite facilities; we gave the third double bedroom an en suite and the

fourth double bedroom direct access to the family bathroom, which

it shares with the smaller fifth bedroom. The kitchen is open plan

to a conservatory at the side, which in turn gives access to a utility

room,” explains Elaine. “A separate dining room, the conservatory

and the lounge all have French doors opening to the patio and the

rear garden. There’s plenty of space for entertaining – we had 70

guests here for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.”

“The annexe provides useful additional accommodation, although we currently only use its living room as a gym. Most of the rear garden

is lawn, which is versatile and easy to maintain,” continues Tom. “The side and rear field boundaries are protected by a laurel hedge, then a wild hedge and then

fencing. The garden is very private and not overlooked. We had part of it landscaped; a curved path from the patio leads past a pebbled bed with inset shrubs to a

further patio and a thatched breeze house. The breeze house seats 10-12 people and has electricity and a TV point, it’s great for watching television in the summer.

We need to downsize now and move nearer to our daughter, but we will miss the space, the views and this peaceful location,” conclude Tom and Elaine.
