editors Note

NOTE FROM THE EDITORThe idea of this issue was to give something back to the advertisers by giving them the opportunity to tell you a bit more about their business. It is not the same as a regular issue in that it doesn’t have all the regular articles, etc. Although I did make sure to include the Directory as so many of you seem to rely on it. Please read all the

interesting things our advertisers have to say about their businesses. There is a not to be missed, fun day out at Ballycasey Craft and Design Centre on 5th December where you can take the kids to see Santa and make a good dent in your Christmas shopping while feeling good about supporting your local businesses. Also, Skycourt have a Ladies Style event planned on 10th December in aid of Milford Hospice and there is a Homegrown Fashion Show on 4th December in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness. There is a puzzle page for the kids in this issue, and check out page 15 where it explains how to watch Santa’s journey around the world on Christmas eve. Also, please note there will be no January/February issue but the Shannon Scene will be back with a March/April issue as usual and I look forward to receiving all your news items to include in this next issue.Have a fabulous Christmas and New Year.Judith Kearney

The tradition of Christmas carols hails back as far as the thirteenth century. Carols were originally communal songs sung during celebrations such as harvest tide as well as Christmas. It was only later that carols began to be sung in church, and to be specifically associated with Christmas. In england, and

some other countries (i.e. Poland and Bulgaria), there is a tradition of Christmas carolling (earlier known as wassailing), in which groups travel from house to house, singing carols, for which they are often rewarded with money, mince pies, or a glass of an appropriate drink. The word wassail comes from a Saxon expression ‘waes

hael’ meaning ‘to your health.’ The wassail bowl was very common in england at Christmas, and great fanfare and ceremony was made while drinking from it. As years went by, wassail came to mean any sort of Christmas toast. One of the most beloved Christmas carols, Silent Night, originated in the tiny village of Oberndorf in the Austrian mountains. The story goes that the day before Christmas eve in 1818, Father Joseph Mohr, pastor of Saint Nicholas church, discovered that the church organ was broken meaning there would be no music for his midnight mass.Taking a verse he had written two years previously he travelled several miles through the snow to his friend Franz Gruber, a school teacher and musician, and Gruber set it to music. At midnight mass, Father Mohr and Gruber, accompanied only by Gruber’s guitar, sang the gentle song, “Silent Night, Holy Night,” for the first time.“Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” can easily be called the world’s best-loved Christmas carol. It has been translated into nearly 300 languages and dialects. Its message of heavenly peace sets the theme for Christmas celebrations around the globe.

Mediation is part of a growing trend to use alternative forms of dispute resolution instead of Litigation, which is both highly expensive and emotionally draining. The Mediator acts as a facilitator to help the parties reach a mutually satisfactory outcome to their dispute. Any settlement terms reached can be signed and recorded in an enforceable Contract. Mediation is an efficient and cost effective way of achieving a fair outcome whilst preserving and at times, even enhancing the relationship, business and personal of the parties in question. By virtue of the confidentiality and without prejudice aspect of the mediation process, the parties may

communicate fully, openly and without fear of compromising any case pending before a Court or Tribunal etc. For the purposes of achieving confidentiality and privacy, mediations will be conducted behind closed doors with no recording of the transcript being kept by the mediator. There will be no external publicity on what transpires at the mediation.everyone wants less expensive and faster ways of resolving disputes, mediation offers that opportunity.Aideen Pendred is a Shannon based Solicitor and Accredited Mediator – see our website for further information at www.claremediation.ie, e-mail us at [email protected] or phone 061 364556.

THE STORy OF THE CHRISTINGlEThe Christingle is a Moravian continental Christmas service for children, which has been taken up many other churches in recent years. ‘Christingle’ is thought to mean ‘Christ-fire’ or ‘Christ-light’. The Moravians began in fifteenth-century Bohemia, came to Ireland in the eighteenth century, and built a church at Crossard in County Clare. The Christingle

started in Germany on Christmas eve in 1748 when children wrote their own hymns and prayers and each was given a candle tied with red ribbon. Today a white candle is placed in an orange, which represents the world, with red ribbon which represents the cost of love, and decorated with sweets that represent God’s gifts. Carols are sung by candlelight to celebrate of the light of Christ. A Christingle Service will be held in Christ Church on Sunday 20th December at 3.30. People of all ages are welcome.

CHRISTCHURCH aDVENT CElEBRaTIONChrist Church, Shannon will celebrate Advent in the town centre this year. There will be a tree for prayer cards, a quiet corner and a space for children in a ‘Room for Christmas’. This will be a place to pause and consider the story of Christmas and its place in our world today. Prayers left on the tree will be dedicated at an ecumenical service just before Christmas. If you are interested in helping, contact 061 363717.

By the use of radar, satellites, Santa Cams and jet fighter aircraft, the North American Air Defense (NORAD) tracks Santa’s progress around the globe. Starting on Christmas eve you can track Santa live as he makes his historical journey and see pictures as the NORAD Santa Cams take photos of Santa and his reindeer. You can even send Santa an email. His elves, Chuckles and Buckley, will be sure he gets your mail.

early Days Playschool

Early Days Playschool of Ballycasey, Shannon was set up in September ‘08 by local women, Joanna Ferns. As a mother of three, Joanna realises the

importance of playschool and how it benefits the child’s development in all areas. Play occurs natually in young children and through their play children develop physical, intellectual, linguistic, social and emotional skills and concepts. early Days provides a safe, caring and stimulating envirnoment which lets children try out new things without the fear of failure, which is very important for the child’s development of a positive self-image. The class of 2008 helped raise money for Barnardos ‘Best Start Programme’ which helps vulnerable pre-schoolers, through the Danone Toddle Waddle. Joanna thinks it is important for the children to feel part of the wider community. early Days also marched in last years St Patricks Day parade. Activities such as these give the childrens self-confidence and self-esteem a great boost.

Joanna is currently studying for her Diploma in Montessori & her Level 6 Supervision in Childcare Certificate. early Days is a member of the Irish Preschool Play Association and on their recent annual inspection the HSe found early Days to be fully compliant with all regulations according to the Childcare Act 2006. early Days qualifies for the new eCCe government scheme which is offering free playschool places for eligible children.Joanna is looking forward to meeting parents and children for the coming year and being part of your child’s first step on the road to education. Call Joanna on 086 301 5038 or 061 362991.

Ariston College

Ariston College

Through these challenging times, Ariston College has put together a number of short, flexible, & af-

fordable courses, which are FeTAC certified, in order to enhance ones career prospects. The college is focusing this January on offering value for money to get people back on track with work, enabling them to map their career in a positive way. All our trainers are highly qualified & experienced in deliv-ering a range of courses for individuals and groups.

With a low budget in mind the college has put to-gether these certified courses, which have a very practical approach, allowing individuals to work be-tween sessions on projects and assignment at their own pace.In addition to being career focused, we also offer courses on a more social level to get people mixing in the community & at the same time learning a new skill. Our language programmes are very popular yet again. The college is currentily preparing for its Irish, French and Dutch camps which will take place in the Summer of 2010 - these courses will be suitable for National and Secondary school students. These courses are affordable, fun, challenging & very re-warding. So why not take the next step & contact the college to see what we have for you or indeed why not try our vouchers to take the ease out of trying to figure out what to get your near & dear ones for Christmas. We also offer a number of workshops which are geared to those who don’t have the time to attend a series of classes yet would like to learn specific skills.
