Page 2: Shamrock Visitors Guide

The City of Shamrock Welcomes YouThanks for choosing Shamrock as a stop in your travels or business. Hopefully your schedule will allow

you to enjoy some of the attractions and experiences Shamrock has to offer. You should make your plans now to also be in Shamrock March 15-18, 2018, as our entire town turns Irish for St. Patrick’s weekend. Shamrock’s St. Patrick’s Celebration is the official St. Patrick’s Celebration for the entire State of Texas.

Shamrock’s location is referred to as the “Crossroads of America” where Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 83 intersect. It’s the only crossing of two major border to border highways in the United States which makes us easily accessible to industrial shipping, commerce and tourism.

One of Historic Route 66’s most photographed landmarks is Shamrock’s renovated art deco-style Tower Station and U-Drop Inn. Youngsters will certainly recognize the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn as its likeness is featured in the Walt Disney movie “Cars I, II & III.” Its likeness is also the souvenir shop at Disney’s recently opened Cars Land. Tourists from all over the world have visited this landmark built in 1936 which is located in the heart of Shamrock at the corner of Highway 83 and Historic Route 66. This top Route 66 attraction is also Shamrock’s Information Center and features an expanded Route 66 and Texas gift shop.

While in Shamrock, a trip to our downtown district will be a fun and interesting visit. Take your camera because in addition to shopping, antiquing and restaurants history comes alive in downtown Shamrock. Water Tower Plaza features the history of the construction of Texas’ Tallest Water Tower plus a 90-foot mural of Shamrock history. New to Shamrock’s downtown is Blarney Stone Plaza displaying a section of Ireland’s mysterious stone plus a historical marker acknowledging the Shamrock St. Patrick’s Celebration. Also in the downtown area at 204 N. Madden (One Block East of Blarney Stone Plaza) is the Pioneer West Museum Complex where you can relive historic Texas. Downtown Shamrock’s Texas Theater features first run movies on the Texas Panhandle’s largest screen presented in hi-def, digital and 3D every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We invite you to check out our web sites shamrocktexas.net or shamrockedc.org where you will find information about our community and what you can experience.

Your Shamrock hotel stay entitles you to a free round of golf at the Shamrock Country Club or free admission to most events that are scheduled during your stay with us. I hope you enjoy your stay in our town and will come back to see us again.

Pridefully, Buc Weatherby

Get Your Kicks on Shamrock’s Route 66

Shamrock lies on the fabled Route 66, which once was recognized as the major east-west thorough-fare in the nation. “The Mother Road” is not

found on any maps, but it holds an almost mythical place in U.S. history.

Here are some facts — and trivia — about Route 66.•Current maps do not include old Route 66. The last

stretch of the road disappeared from “official” maps in 1984.

•According to most sources, Route 66 is 2,448 miles long (about 4,000 kilometers). However, this is a rough approximation because the road has had many different alignments through the years.

•Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, picking up as many possible bits and pieces of existing roads.

•Route 66 crosses eight states and three time zones. The states that the Mother Road runs through are Illi-nois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexi-

co, Arizona and California.•In 1926, only 800 miles of Route 66 was paved.

Only in 1937 did Route 66 get paved end-to-end.•Bobby Troup wrote the song, “(Get Your Kicks on)

Route 66” in 1946. •The numerical designation 66 was official assigned

to the Chicago-to-Los Angeles route in the summer of 1926.

•Route 66 starts in Chicago, Illinois, and ends in San-ta Monica, California.

•91 percent of the original Route 66 is still in use in Texas.

•85 percent of the entire road is still drivable.

•Kansas has the shortest section of the Mother Road with only 13 miles. How-ever, three historic Route 66 towns are located on this short segment including Baxter Springs, Galena and Riverton.

During inclement weather, the community is equipped with tornado warning sirens that will sound in the event that a tornado is spotted and is on the ground. It sounds similar to the old War World II bomb shelter sirens. You may seek cover at the Church of Christ located at the corners of Wall and Laville Streets located on the map with-in. If the siren sounds again, another tornado has been spotted. No all clear signal will be blown. It is up to you to determine when it is safe to leave the storm shelter.

Built in 1915 at a cost of $6,560, this gi-ant structure still towers over downtown Shamrock at a height of 176-plus feet. It

is still believed to be the tallest water tower of its class in the state of Texas.

Shamrock’s Water Tower Plaza is a must-see and provides great photo opportunities including plaques detailing the tower’s construction and a 90-foot mural saluting Shamrock’s history.

In the 1930’s, U.S. Highways 66 and 83 were completed through Sham-rock. After these highways were completed, businesses sprouted all along them, specifically the Tower Service Station and U-Drop Inn Restaurant.

This unique building was erected of brick and green glazed tile in 1936. The building and tower were designed by architect J. C. Berry of Pampa, Texas, and represented the art-deco style that was popular in the ‘20s and ‘30s.

The building and tower were constructed by J. M. Tindall and R. C. Lewis, at a cost of $23,000. Mr. John Nunn conceived the idea for the building, and owned and operated the U-Drop Inn that was originally housed in the building.

The Tower Service Station was originally owned and operated by W.C. Tennison. Around Shamrock, the story goes that when J.M. Tindall decided to build the service station, he used a design originally drawn by his friend, John Nunn, who picked up an old nail and scratched out the plans for the building in the dirt.

This building is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and Historic Route 66 in Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas.

We believe the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn to be one of the most inter-esting and eye-catching points of interest along Historic Route 66. It is pho-tographed by interested tourists daily. It is not at all uncommon for people to stop and say that they ate in the cafe 20, 30, 40 — even 50 years ago.

Today, the building is owned by the City of Shamrock. The building has

and continues to generate interest among many people who are interested in the history of our nation’s transportation heritage.

In 2003-04, the building received a $1.7 million federal grant. The build-ing has since been restored to its original glory and adapted into a museum, visitors’ center, and gift shop.

History of the U-Drop InnThe U-Drop Inn has been a familiar sight for travelers since 1938.

The likeness of Shamrock’s Tower Station & U-Drop Inn was used in Disney’s Cars movies and is featured at Disneyland’s new Carsland. In Carsland (above) the likeness is used as a souvenir shop.
