Page 31: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

Who was Mahatma Gandhi?

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 at

Porbander, a small town on the western coast of India.

Page 32: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

His Life...Gandhi studied hard and

became a lawyer.

He did a lot of his work in South Africa.

Page 33: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

However he was sad...Gandhi didn‘t like how badly the white

South Africans were treating Indians like himself and black Africans.

He decided to do something about it.

Page 34: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

What did he do?Gandhi didn‘t want to be angry or

fight. He led non-violent protests to make sure that Indians and

black Africans were treated fairly by the white people.

After he had helped some of the people in South Africa get better treatment, he returned to India.

Page 35: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

His beliefs...He and others believed India should

have its freedom and get rid of the English rulers and their army.

He taught his people to peacefully fight back at the English. He didn‘t want to

hurt or kill anyone. Ghandi peacefully fought against

English laws that were making Indian people’s lives difficult and unfair.

Page 36: Sewa Day Assembly Pack

What happened in the end? After years and many more non-violent protests, Gandhi and his

hundreds of thousands of freedom fighters peacefully forced the

English to leave India and allow the Indians to run their own country.

Gandhi always made sure this was done peacefully and no fighting

ever took place.
