PREFACE

This ii already the fifth volume of the „Geographical Expeditions to Spitsber-gen", containing papers presented during the Polar Session of the Earth Sciences Institute, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, and committed to the problems of the development and changes of the Arctic natural environment.

The volume contains articles, short communications and research reports connected with scientific investigations of the 1991 summer research season in Spitsbergen and the Barents Sea region. The selections and contents of the volume reflect the results of the international cooperation in the field of the polar research realized by the Earth Sciences Institute.

The reported research results were obtained during the Vlth UMCS Expedition to Bellsund as well as international expeditions on research vessels: „Polarstern" (Expedition of Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven) „Pomor" and „Dalnyie Zielentsy" (Expedition of Murmansk Marine Biology Institute). With UMCS Expedition cooperated also: Russian ornithological expedition and Czechoslovakian Arctic Biological and Diving Expedition from Ostrava.

The 1991 geomorphological research programme of the Vlth UMCS Expedition was realized in cooperation with archaeological institutes: of the Trondheim University (Norway) and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
