Calibration o heat meters in district heating pipes is
usually a complex procedure which can yield inaccurate
measurements in some cases. As a result, nancial
losses are requently incurred by the provider as well
as the customer.
TV Rheinland is your competent partner in on-site
inspection and calibration o district heating meters
using an innovative and reliable technique.
We are happy to assist you in all other areas o the
utilities industry too rom the tendering process to
maintenance. We are your one-stop shop or a com-
prehensive range o services.

Many large heat meters in district heating pipes remain
in use or several decades ater the initial calibration.
Until now it was not possible to recalibrate a running
system. In the best case the meters were removed and
inspected on a testing rig. However, the optimized
calibration conditions in a testing rig can dier notably
rom actual operating conditions. This can result in
measurement errors with major nancial consequences
in addition to the expenses incurred due to downtime.
To solve this problem, TV Rheinland in cooperation
with ILA GmbH, OPTOLUTION GmbH and the
German National Metrology Institute (PTB) has
developed a new laser-optical measuring technique.
This method permits highly accurate, on-site calibra-
tion o fow sensors without having to interrupt
operations. Nor is it necessary to remove the heat
meter or drain the system.
A large district heating company also wanted to
benet rom this modern technique: In the past,
discrepancies had oten arisen concering the heating
bills or an industrial plant. Furthermore, the client
was unhappy that the plants ongoing operations hadto be interrupted, which gave rise to additional expenses.
With the help o a certied hot-tapping technique,
a vision panel was integrated into the clients pipeline,
and the fow rate was measured using a mobile laser-
doppler velocimeter (LDV). This permitted a deter-
mination o the fow sensors measurement deviation
in the assembled state. Subsequently, the mobile
equipment was removed and the pipe was sealed secu-
rely with a blank fange until the next inspection date.
Ongoing operations thereore remained unaected,
balance sheet discrepancies were reduced to a mini-
mum, and thus resolving the dispute between customerand supplier.
