From the Principal’s Desk...

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On behalf of our faculty and staff, I welcome everyone back to Holy Rosary as well as a warm welcome to

our new families.

Our motto of One Faith, One Family, One School has never been more evident than during these first

few weeks of school. One of our goals last year was to teach and encourage our students to respect

their teachers, their classmates, and themselves. They are championing this goal with a renewed sense of

purpose. We are hearing “good morning’s”, “excuse me’s, and “God bless you’s” to name a few. The

new “Buddy Bench” in the playground has been positively utilized. When a child who is feeling friendless

is sitting on the bench, students are lovingly heading to the bench to befriend that child. We see Jesus’

love every day in your children.

There is an air of excitement as the students explore the school embracing and delighting in the changes

in the building. The favored addition this year is the Sensory Path, which is splashed down the main hall-

way from mid-school to the main office. Students of all ages--yes, even 7th and 8th graders have been

spotted--are following the path by skipping, dancing, jumping and crawling along the set footsteps, ABC’s

and numbers. The path is a “brain break” that gets the blood pumping by using a child’s muscles, which

helps them burn some energy. As a result, students feel rested and refreshed and ready to go back to

their classrooms to focus. These paths increase cognitive functioning and reduce sensory seeking behav-

iors. The students are just having FUN!

We are also excited about a 20 foot flagpole that was installed at the side entrance to the school. Each

morning we start our day outside with the Pledge of Allegiance, and now we will be able to watch as the

flag is raised by the students. Our goal of respect is carried on further with the love of our country.

Thank you for entrusting your child to us. It is our responsibility first and foremost to educate your child

in the way of Jesus. Along with this intention, we promise to do our best to make your child’s year at

Holy Rosary fruitful.

Dear Teachers, Students and Parents of Holy Rosary School,

Praised be Jesus Christ – now and forever!

Welcome back! I guess! Some of you may be glad to be back to school. Some of you may not be. I re-

member I used to hate to go back to school. One year, I remember 4 of us boys sitting on a curb the day

before school was supposed to start. We were the saddest group of guys you could imagine. We hated

the thoughts of going back to school. What made matters worse were the girls in the neighborhood.

They couldn’t wait to go back to school. They wanted to see all their friends again. We (the boys) could-

n’t understand that attitude. But once we all got back to school, everything was okay. We rejoined our

friends. We got back into the swing of things. We began to look forward to the new things that being

back to school would bring: New projects, Christmas, Spiritual devotions, Easter, Communion, Confirma-

tion – all wonderful things. Our sadness soon turned into joy again.

This year, of course, is a special year. We have Confirmation this year. There’s a new 8th grade who will

experience graduation. There’s a new Communion class. All these things are wonderful events that we

could not have if we didn’t return to school, So, yes indeed, I say Welcome Back. There are many good

things awaiting you. Enjoy them and let them lead you to a greater love of God and each other.

Dear Holy Rosary School Family,

October 7th, and, indeed, the whole month, celebrates the significance and importance of the devotion after which our

beloved school is named. The Holy Rosary!

It’s the ideal time to once again reflect on the history of this devotion and to pass-on this knowledge to our children.

As May is the month of Our Lady, Queen and Mother, October is the month of her Holy Rosary. The designation of

this month came about as follows…

It was on the first Sunday of October that the Christian forces won the Battle of Lepanto after they prayed the Rosary

for this victory over non-believers… Christian forces were facing the aggressive army of non-believers from the East at

sea, on that first Sunday of October 1571. These armies were about to overrun Christian Europe; Christianity was in

peril. Meanwhile, Christian Confraternities of the Rosary (established by the Dominicans) were praying the rosary in

Rome, encouraged by Pope Pius V. Victory was theirs and they attributed it to our Lady and the Rosary.

Eventually, in 1573, the Dominicans petitioned Rome to establish a feast for Our Lady of the Rosary (also called Our

Lady of Victory), in thanksgiving for this great victory and preservation of Christianity. This was done, but only in

churches with shrines to Our Lady of the Rosary. However, in 1716, this feast was prescribed worldwide, to be cele-

brated as it is today, on October 7th.

Secondly, it was during the October apparition of Our Lady at Fatima (October 13, 1917) that Our Lady identified her-

self as the “Lady of the Rosary.” This identification was followed by the great miracle of the sun witnessed by 70,000

people, which gave credence to all she said at Fatima. Our Lady appeared at Fatima (in Portugal) on the thirteenth of

the month from May to October. She encouraged three little shepherds (Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta) “to pray the

rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary.” Thus, Mary herself indicates how much delight she takes both

in this title and in the devotion of the rosary. She promised an end of war, peace and the conversion of sinners if peo-

ple prayed her Rosary.

Sisters and brothers, it is good for us to reflect on the fifteen promises of Our Lady to those who recite the rosary:

1) Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2) I promise my special

protection and the greatest graces to all those who recite the rosary. 3) The rosary shall be a powerful armor against

hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4) It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will ob-

tain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vani-

ties, and will lift them to desire eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5) The soul,

which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the rosary, shall not perish. 6) Whoever shall recite the rosary

devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God

will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace

of God, and become worthy of eternal life. 7) Whoever has true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sac-

raments of the Church. 8) Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death the

light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in

paradise. 9) I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary. 10) The faithful children of the

rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven. 11) You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the ro-

sary. 12) All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13) I have obtained from

my Divine Son that all the advocates of the rosary shall have for their intercessors the entire celestial court during

their life and at the hour of death. 14) All those who recite my rosary are my children, sisters and brothers of my only

son, Jesus Christ. 15) Devotion of my rosary, is a great sign of predestination.

As the rosary is a blessed and cherished heritage of our Catholic Faith, let us all be devotees of this grace-filled gift Our

Lady has given us… just as we are proud members of our Holy Rosary schoo1!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten has been having so much fun learning and making friends in this first month of school! We

have been working hard at learning our new school rules and procedures. We have enjoyed taking a tour

of our awesome new school and love attending our special classes! In Religion, we have talked about how

special the Bible is. We love hearing Mrs. Pickering read stories from the Bible! Our favorite story is the

story of creation! We love to list all of God's creation, and we are learning ways to take care of all our

special gifts God has given us! We enjoyed going to mass with the whole school twice already! We cele-

brated First Friday Mass and a special Mass to remember Mrs. Monaghan, who was a wonderful teacher

here at Holy Rosary, and is now at home in Heaven with Jesus. September has been such a fun month

here in kindergarten. We can't wait to see what is in store for the month of October!

Student Council

On Friday, September 13th, the middle school held their student council elections for the school year. 7th

and 8th graders ran for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. There were a

total of 11 students who ran for office by delivering original speeches in front of the 4th through 8th grades

explaining why they wanted to represent the school. That afternoon all students in 4th through 8th grades

exercised their right to vote by choosing who they wanted to represent their school. The winners are as

follows....

Treasurer: Emmett Baxter

The student body will also be electing class representatives in the month of September. The winners will

be announced on October 4th during First Friday Mass.

4th Grade

Fourth grade is working on digging deep inside and finding their inner

Picasso. The students have learned about the art work of Pablo Picasso

and are drawing, painting, and writing about the famous artist him-

self. We are learning to respect one another's differences and embrace

our personal beauty as children of Christ.

Mrs. Luthy’s Classes

Mrs. Luthy's 5th grade begins their transition into the middle school. As they learn to balance their needs

for two classes at a time, many are learning very quickly. The students are quickly learning that organiza-

tion is key to making sure the day operates smoothly. Academic recovery allows the students to work

through their homework, while their classroom teachers are available to assist, if needed. We look for-

ward to seeing their growth as the year progresses. In Religion, the students will learn more about the

Sacraments, and gain greater knowledge and understanding about the Mass.

Grade 6 Religion classes will learn about Salvation History, focusing on the Old Testament, while 7th

grade learns more about the Person of Jesus in the New Testament. Church History is the focus in 8th

grade. The students learn about how the Church was formed and how it spread throughout the world,

and will learn about various times in our faith formation, along with some of the history of the Archdio-

cese of Philadelphia.

Resource Room

Ms. Prieto is very excited to begin her new position as Holy Rosary's Resource Room teacher. While she

will miss her friends on the first floor and being in a classroom with a whole group of her own, she is

looking forward to the challenges of a fresh start. This summer, Ms. Prieto worked with Mrs. Gilman and

Mrs. Fitzpatrick on creating a "Sensory Center" in the Resource Room. Teachers throughout the school

are encouraged to borrow the sensory materials as needed for their students. Some of the items in our

new center include scented putty, handheld fidgets, weighted lap pads, noise cancelling headphones, and

therapeutic wiggle seats among many other materials. Research shows that sensory stimulation supports

cognitive growth as well as fine and gross motor skills. They may also be used to help maintain focus and

calm an anxious or frustrated child. We are excited to see the benefits the Sensory Center will have for

our students!

3rd Grade

Third grade has been up to a lot so far this year. We have started to get in to our routine, but everyone

is still learning and adjusting to being upstairs for the first time with the older students! The kids have

begun their first official year of a Social Studies curriculum, and we are beginning to learn about communi-

ties. We have talked about what a community is and have even read about a few communities around

the world. In the next chapter, we are going to focus on the differences between rural, urban, and subur-

ban communities. The students will be able to create a poster about them when we are finished. In math,

we have been focusing on rounding and addition with regrouping. This is a review from second grade,

but it is a good reminder of math strategies. ELA is up and running as well. We have completed our first

story, When Charlie McButton Lost Power. We spent time talking about literary elements and practicing working with partners. In Religion class we have spent a good part of our time learning about talking to

God through prayer and opening ourselves up to the gifts and talents He has given us. Third grade is go-

ing to be a lot of work, but it is looking like it is going to be a wonderful year!

1st Grade

The first grade has been getting to know

the routine of their new grade. They have

been busy writing about their summer fun

and also sharing their favorite thing about

their first day of school. They listened to

the story, Rainbow Fish, talked about shar-

ing and being kind to friends and made

their very own Rainbow Fish to decorate

their classroom. In Religion, they are talk-

ing about how Jesus is their friend and

how they can be good friends like Jesus. In

Math, they are very excited to be learning

addition and are having fun adding every-

thing in sight. They are looking forward

to a lot of learning and fun in first grade.

Pre-K

What a great start Pre-K is off to this school year! They have been

having fun engaging in tons of activities getting to know one another

and sharing what makes them each special. During “God Time,”

they have been learning all about prayer. They even received a visit

from the seminarians, Drew and Bob, who discussed with them

even further why it is important that we pray each and every day.

They have really enjoyed bonding with their prayer partners and

having them read to them each week. A class pet, a caterpillar, has

come to take temporary residence in the classroom. The class has

been enjoying watching the daily changes in the caterpillar and is

anxiously anticipating it morphing into a monarch to be released!

We will be having a fall contest and while you can submit at any time throughout the

To be awarded any and all financial aid, families must be registered for the

2019/2020 school year and all tuition for this school year must be paid in full.
