While the Albany Area is a great place to live, work, and do business, like allother communities, our area has its challenges. If you are even remotely pluggedin to this great community, you know that a high poverty rate is a major challengethat we face. However, where there are challenges, there are opportunities toovercome them. The Chamber believes that Strive2Thrive is a piece to the puzzlein minimizing poverty in the Albany Area.

Although fighting poverty is not directly associated with the Chamber’s missionto promote and stimulate the economic well-being of our membership and torepresent the commercial, industrial, and professional interests in major issues ofeconomic and public policy, our Chamber, through strategic planning, recognizedthat our high poverty rate hinders the economic well-being of our membershipand the business community at-large. As a result, the Chamber developed theStrive2Thrive program through the leadership of John Culbreath and CynthiaGeorge and contributions by countless others along the way.

Since its beginning in 2010, Strive2Thrive has battled poverty by bringingcommunity support and resources to people who desire to get out of poverty. The Program strives to develop self-sufficiency in participating families through

incentives, coaching, training, and technical assistance. In its short history, Strive2Thrive has become an awardwinning program that is being studied by other communities as they consider adding similar programs in theirareas. Our Chamber is proud to be the first business advocacy organization to develop such a plan of action tomove families into self-sufficiency.

As this program has grown beyond the scope of the Chamber’s mission, the Chamber has spun-offStrive2Thrive into its own organization, which has its own focused mission and leadership team. The Chamberis pleased to continue to support and partner with this organization in combating poverty for the enhancementof the economic well-being of our membership.

Just as strategic planning led to an effective poverty-fighting program, the Chamber is pleased with recentstrategic planning meetings with the City of Albany and Dougherty County through the EconomicDevelopment Commission. This planning has led to the development of new initiatives associated with thethree R’s, Recruitment, Retention, and Renewal. When called upon, please be prepared to make investments ofyour time and talents in these economic development activities, as it is expected to yield dividends forgenerations to come. Additionally, if your business has not already made financial contributions to the EDC’sefforts for 2012, please join the financial commitment and resolve of your neighbors in the businesscommunity, when called upon. Extensive enhancement in economic development becomes more of a realityas we all work together.

"I was a gangmember, I was aleader," Miles told acrowd of rapt businessleaders at the AlbanyArea Chamber ofCommerce's recentStrive2Thrive Rise NShine Breakfast. After abeat, though, sheadded, the hurt in hersubdued voice obvious,"I was a nobody."But Miles just

happened to beattending GEDpreparation classes onthe day that membersof the Chamber came totalk about a newprogram designed tohelp struggling families battle their wayout of poverty. Intrigued, Miles felt shehad nothing to lose."My whole life had been a struggle,"

she said. "I had children whose fatherwas never around, and it just hit methat it was time to leave the streetsalone. I wanted a better life. I wantedmy children to have a better life."So Miles signed on for the Chamber-

sponsored Strive2Thrive program, determining that she wanted a changein her life."What they were talking about

appealed to me immediately," she said."I realized that, with the help of somecaring people, I could change my life. Isaw an opportunity to get away fromthe things that had been holding medown my whole life. I saw a way tomake things better for my children."

Miles was born in Albany in 1982 toparents with little education and"having trouble making ends meet."She was ridiculed by her peers atschool because she wore only hand-me-down or second-hand clothes, andshe soon became expert at "taping upmy shoes" so she could get anotheryear out of them."Wow, I suppressed these memories

for so many years," Miles told the RiseN Shine gathering. "My fear of beingjudged caused me to shut down."The frustration of her parents'

poverty led them, as is so often thecase, to strike out at their offspring.Miles was soon convinced she would"never amount to anything.""My mom was there, but she really

wasn't," Miles said. "My dad was notfully educated, and that put him under

a lot of pressure. Hetook his frustrationout on (his children),telling us we'd neverbe able to accomplishanything. I believedhim."So much so, in fact,

Miles started spendingmost of her time inthe streets, runningwith gang membersand growing moreand more convincedthat she'd found a"replacement family"that cared for her.Soon, she acceptedtheir antisocialactivities as herdestiny.

"When my parents pushed me out, Ihad nothing and nobody," she said. "Iwent to the streets, and the streetsbecame my teacher. We fought ... wedid wrong things that it scares me toeven think about now."Left alone with two children and no

hope, Miles decided, for the sake ofher kids, to look into classes thatwould allow her to obtain a highschool equivalency diploma. A shorttime later, she was introduced to theStrive2Thrive concept. The adjustment was not easy."When Jeanetta started the program,

she did not trust anyone," Miles'primary ally, Kimberly Griffin, said. "Itwas a gradual process, but sheeventually came to see that there werepeople (in Strive2Thrive) who trulycared about her as a person. That was

Jeanetta’s Story...Strive2Thrive helps families create new and better livesJeanetta Miles very easily could have become a statistic. She'd lived alife, after all, that had broken many of her peers, swallowed them wholeand spit them out as victims. But unlike those around her on some ofAlbany's meaner streets who wound up in prison, hustling drugs or dead,Miles found salvation of the sweetest kind. That she found it essentiallyby accident makes her story all the more compelling.

something she'd never experiencedbefore."Miles said she drew strength from

volunteers like John Culbreath, whosaid, "We've seen a lot of ships set sailin Albany. Some of them have sunk tothe bottom of the Flint River, and someof them are just drifting along, floundering."But this ship has set on a course of

eliminating poverty, and by God, that'swhat we're going to do."Trusting, however, was not

something Miles did easily."Yeah, I was a little stubborn at first,"

she said. "People had let me down somuch in my life, I was not ready toopen myself up to the possibility thatsomeone actually cared about me,wanted to help me. And it was so hardfor me to talk about the life I'd alwaysbeen ashamed of."But Griffin and other Strive2Thrive

volunteers persisted. And little by littlethey wore Miles' protective veneerdown. And slowly her life started toturn around."I changed my mindset," Miles said.

"I put all the stuff in my past behindme; I let it be my past."The former gang member, long

abused by society and — even morehurtful — by the ones she loved, suddenly saw some light at the end of

the tunnel. She got her GED. Sheenrolled in Albany Technical College'sArchitectural Drafting and Designprogram. She found a new place forher and her two children to live.

She's working at Albany Tech nowand is four classes away fromgraduation. She's paid off half the debtshe built ("I'm so proud of myself!")and she's working to get a vehicle thatwill allow her the freedom that has solong eluded her."God has helped me," Miles said.

"Strive2Thrive has helped me. I'mready to graduate from Albany Techand start my own architectural firm. Iwant to be one of the people whohelps others like Strive2Thrive helpedme. I believe there is hope for ourcommunity because I haveexperienced it. I've seen what can

happen."That, S2T organizer Cynthia George

said, is what makes volunteers' effortsso rewarding"These wonderful people, their

mental fortitude, they continue toinspire all of us," she said. "We realizethat whatever effort we put into this, our community — Albany — will reapthe harvest."Miles, meanwhile, is now the face of

Strive2Thrive's efforts, the embodimentof what can be accomplished with thehelp of dedicated volunteers. She says, though, that more work needs to bedone."I speak for everyone who's been

helped by Strive2Thrive when I say weappreciate the community's support,"she said. "But there's more that can bedone. We need more allies; we needmore volunteers. I'm proof of what canhappen; I'm proof of what it means toreach out to another person."If someone had given me the help

I've gotten from Strive2Thrive when Iwas growing up, I'd be much fartheralong than I am now. But I thank Godfor the struggles I've been through. Now I know I can use those strugglesto help others."Thank you to our sponsors, Phoebe

Public service is not a paycheck. It's a mentality focused on creating a greater quality oflife for Americans who live and work in our communities, encouraging them to reach forsomething greater than themselves and placing others before self. The base's "fence line"is not the finish line where our service ends; it's the starting point where it begins. This iswhy Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany's leadership fosters the concept of "Country,Corps and Community" among its Marines and Civilian-Marines. As the local area's No. 1civilian employer, this means much of the installation's workforce will give back to thecommunity that made them who they are.

Service to country not only requires wearing the uniform, but realizing that this countryis not a single race or creed, but a continuous effort. Our forefathers started this effortwhen they laid the first foundations for this country, whether it was the foundations of ourfirst meeting halls or the ideological foundations of our way of life. Citizenship is a choice, not just something that is acquired at birth, and every choice Americans make afterwardwill either serve to weaken or strengthen this effort. MCLB Albany's leadership mentors itsyoung service members and civilians to strengthen this country on and off duty.

Service to Corps means "Committed to having the Courage to practice Honor." Base leadership works to maintain theMarine Corps' values of Honor, Courage and Commitment, and how this relates to public service. Although these values arethe core values of the Corps, they also serve as a guiding light for selfless service. This often means stepping out of one'scomfort zone to teach a class (Courage) to young people, continuing this service (Commitment) and setting a moralexample for others (Honor).

Service to community means volunteerism. MCLB Albany's nearly $707 million dollar contribution to the local economy isnot enough. The installation's influence should stretch beyond a dollar amount. This means partnering with communitygroups, hosting public events on base and providing more mentors to the Greater Albany Area. Marines have these skills asthey have applied them in improving the quality of life for others overseas. It is said that every Marine is a rifleman, butevery Marine is also a servant. We teach in the Marine Corps that every Marine should leave an area better than he or shefound it and this includes our communities.

We, at MCLB Albany, look forward to partnering with community organizations and key leaders as we realize our serviceto the public. It is said "to whom much is given, much is required" and as the largest contributor to the local economy, wehave much to give.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEOOver the last five months I have talked with many people that share different attitudes and

beliefs on why our Chamber is important and what we can do to improve. The key issues thatkeep resurfacing are: reinforcing the importance of our Chamber and sharing our story with thecommunity.

When I ask people why they are members of our Chamber I receive numerous reasons thatvary from personal marketing opportunities to the role we play in public policy and advocacy. When I speak to area businesses that are not members of our Chamber there are two commonlyasked questions: “Why is the Chamber of Commerce important and what can the Chamber do forme?”

Having considered these questions for nearly 12 years, either working or volunteering in theChamber industry, I would like to submit to our members and the business community my beliefon why our Chamber is important.

If you are a business owner, the answer is simple. The Chamber of Commerce is the onlyorganization in our region that advocates for business before legislative and regulatory bodies. We

work diligently 365 days a year supporting, promoting and protecting our business community’s interests.

If, however, you are not a business owner, the answer does not appear as straightforward, but the benefits to you are justas important. When small businesses succeed, jobs are created, the tax base increases and new revenue is created for theregion.

The Chamber and the Economic Development Commission stand for the private sector – as the champions of jobcreation, we desperately need the business community’s backing. Ninety percent of our total membership base is smallbusiness; they risk their money and time hoping to build a successful business using their skills and hard work. The nexttime you walk into one of our small businesses, please tip your hat to the individuals you encounter and remember theircourage in running that business benefits all of us.

The Chamber’s goals are to assist these businesses and to make sure that good jobs are created, and preserved inDougherty County and our surrounding area. We are currently working to enhance our annual programming to bringadditional value and visibility to our community and provide more opportunities for our members.

It is a privilege to be the President & CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce. We have a dedicated staff thatbelieves in what our Chamber is doing and what we will accomplish in the future. There is no limit to what our Chambercan do and how effective we can be in our program of work. We are here for the long term, please join us and enjoy theride!!
