FAMILY FOCUSCelebrate the Healthy Way!

by Rachel Jury, Child Care Aware® of Kansas, Infant/Toddler Specialist Region One

Cupcakes, cookies and sugary foods are a staple for events such as birthday/holiday parties in child care. However, we know how important it is for children to make healthy choices. Snack time and celebrations are a perfect time to introduce healthy foods in a fun way!

Try these ideas at your next celebration:• Friendship Fruit Salad - Have each family member bring

a different fruit and make a fruit salad to share! (You can also make fruit kabobs!)

• Fruit Cups (Find the recipe at www.skinnytaste.com/2011/06/frozen-fruit-pops.html)

• Banana Pops - Slice bananas in half and slide in a popsicle stick. Roll in yogurt and whole grain cereal topping and freeze.

• Fruit Smoothies - blend fruit with ice and low-fat milk• Whole-grain crackers with cheese cubes, string cheese

or hummus• Cereal mix (whole-grain, low sugar cereals mixed with

dried fruit, pretzels, etc.)• Celery with peanut butter and raisins*• Try serving raw vegetables with fun and healthy dips

such as hummus, salsa, bean dip, low fat ranch or low fat yogurt

• Make sure to offer water, low-fat or fat-free milk or 100% juice to drink

*Please consider ages when choosing foods. Some items may be choking hazards. Also, watch for food allergies and offer foods that all the children can enjoy.

Also, consider non-food celebrations! Non-food focus activities provide opportunities for singing, dancing, playing games and more! Here are some ideas to try as an alternative to food!• Games• Crafts• Dance Party• Have family members come and read a book to the

group• Participate in a community project• Themed scavenger hunt• Have a treasure chest with different items that the

child can choose• Create a “Celebrate Me” book, have classmates draw

pictures to describe what is special about that child• Allow the child to be the “special helper” Sources: www.actionforhealthykids.org/storage/documents/parent-toolkit/celebrationsf3b.pdf and www.actionforhealthykids.org/storage/documents/parent-toolkit/foodideasf3a.pdf

Fall is here, time to do some fun fall activities!

Corncob Printing

Supplies: Corncobs, paper towels, paint, a shallow container, and paper

Directions: Wash corncobs and allow them to dry for serveral days, (or buy pre-dried cornbos in the hispanic food section). Make paint pads by placing folded paper towels in shallow containers and pouring on yellow tempura paint. Have the children first roll the corncobs on the paint pads. Then let them roll the corncobs accross their papers to make prints.

Variation: Cut the corncobs in half. Let the children dip the cut-off ends into the paint and press them onto their papers to make corncob flowers.

Even Better: Provide the corncobs and paint and see the variety of ways children choose to use them to create works of art!
