Twenty-Fi h Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflec ng on the Sacred Scriptures:

Both the First Reading from the Prophet Amos and the Gospel deal with the right use of material resources. The Prophet Amos comes down hard on the rich who reduced the poor to objects and undermined God’s holy days. The Prophet Amos challenges the well-to-do of his day to treat the poor with dignity, jus ce and equality. They must amend their behavior. How do we treat our own poor today? How do we view them?

The Gospel likewise presents us with the story of the steward who misappropriates and squanders his mas-ter’s property. He is portrayed as dishonest because he serves his own interests, not of his master. Knowing that he is to be dismissed, he acts prudently by reducing the interests the debtors owed on the loans of his master and the fees to be levied to benefit his own pockets. He is neither a child of light nor exemplary. How-ever, he is prudent.

My sisters and brothers in Christ, the Readings present us with a challenge. We must use wisely the material resources God has given to us. Both the material goods and our own lives are transitory. We must use them to prepare ourselves for eternal life.

Secondly, Jesus is clear. If we are faithful is small ma ers, we will most likely be faithful in great ones and vice versa. We must be trustworthy.

Lastly and most importantly, we must align our priori es. God must be given the first priority in our lives. Everything else should be secondary. Where do we set our hearts? Is God always the first priority of our lives?

We cannot evade these ques ons, because they are at the heart of discipleship.

Fr Athanasius

HIGH SCHOOL Youth Ministry and Confirma on

Tes monies A few teens and chaperones who went to the Steuben-ville Conference over the summer spoke at the 7:30am and 11am Masses last Sunday. Excerpt from Christopher Espi a, 14, Cuper no high school. “When we arrived at the event, I was blown away by the turnout. Parishes had giant groups, and they were all incredibly passionate about God…the speakers were amazing as well, powerful, and knew what they were talking about. They gave me a new perspec ve on a lot of things. It definitely was a good reminder that, hey God’s in your life. This was important since before that, He was just in the back of my mind. I’m a lot closer with God now.” Calendar 9/22 & 9/29: Confirma on Interviews Upcoming Retreat Oct. 18-20, 2019 in Aptos, CA with St. Francis of Assisi, St. Lawrence, St. Maria Gore , St. Anthony’s, and St. Joseph of Cuper no. If there is sufficient interest, we may be able to schedule another photo day with Lifetouch or we may be able to schedule your photo at another Parish. Please let us know by Sunday, 9/22.

We are also looking for content for our “Then and Now” pag-es. We are par cularly short pictures from the six es, seven-

If you would please take the me to go through old albums (and your parents’ albums) and share some pictures of events at the church that would be most appreciated. Think about bap sms, first communions, wed-dings, picnics, Easter egg hunts, community dinners, service projects, etc. Also, pictures of various ministry ac vi es both “then” – any me in the last 59 years – and “now” as well as pictures of the various priests who served here (we have plenty of Father Jim, but could use more of everyone else). We really want this book to celebrate who we are today and our fabulous history, but can only do so with your help. We can scan all submissions and return originals to you or you can take your own picture of the pieces and email them to Karen. The sooner we collect the content the sooner we can send the book to publica on.

What is Our Choice?

When Jesus presents the parable of the rich man who hesitates to modify his money making habits, he is asking him to find balance in giving to himself with giving to those less well off. The rich man hesi-tates, but goes ahead and chooses to relent, to modify the debts owed to him.

We have choices to make in life. They o en have to do with moral issues. We need to ask the ques on, “What would Jesus do?” When confronted with the choice between heavenly wealth and worldly wealth, what do we do? Do we remember the words of Amos in his exhorta on, “Hear this,” he yells, “those who trample on the needy and destroy the poor of the land!” He warns of retribu on in the end, that God will remember what they have done.

We hear that there is a way through this difficulty. Our devo on to worldly wealth must be placed in the service of our striving for heav-enly wealth. The “needy and the poor of the land” must be the focal point in our striving for heaven. What have we done for the “least of these?”
