On the 1st of August 1857, the two former schools in Linton amalgamated onto the current site and

consequently, last month marked the passing of 150 years of local public education as State School 880:

Linton Primary School.

Next month, on the weekend of the 14th and 15th of October, we hope for some spring sunshine to help us

as we party on with the help of various community groups and local businesses.

Saturday the 14th sees a home game for the Linton Cricket Club, the Historical Society rooms and Library

open from 2:00-5:00 p.m., a guided Cemetery Walk at 3:00 p.m, and culminating in the Reunion Dinner at

the Rec Reserve from 6:00 p.m. (book at Trybooking.com/Linton or phone the school on 5344 7341). And

remember - the dinner is for all past and present Lintonians, not just those who have attended the Linton

Primary School!

Sunday has demonstrations at the Men’s Shed from 10:00-2:00, the Historical Society and Library open from

11:00-3:00 with a Town Walk from 11:00 a.m. See vintage and classic cars at the Rec, a Devonshire Tea and

‘come and try’ day at the Bowls Club, and of course a Family Fun Day at the school from 11:00-3:00. There

will be a native petting zoo, pedal-powered slot-cars, bouncy castle (adult-sized!), the Golden Plains Shire’s

‘Create Crate’ full of giant-sized games. Add to that school tours, a grand unveiling at 1:00 p.m., food, drinks

and coffee at all your usual spots plus a few more, and it adds up to a day not to be missed!

It’s (Nearly) Time for a Celebration!

Interview conducted and by: Josiane Behmoiras There is a story about Michael Hough that defines the man: inquisitive, learned, humorous man of action. I heard the story when I expressed my surprise at another one of Michael’s far-flung and diverse stints: studying Hebrew in Jerusalem.

Michael: ‘… I was studying in Rome and there was a summer course at the Hebrew University so I said oh, it’s a good spot to study Hebrew …’

Tell her how you got your ticket,’ says Bennita, Michael’s wife.

‘The house I was staying, the rector of the house didn’t like beards, he said clergymen shouldn’t have beards, because I had a beard. So he came around lunchtime one day – he knew I was trying to get the money and he said, if you shave your beard off, I will pay your fare [to Jerusalem]. So that was during a meal – I went off and shaved my beard during the meal and came back.’ And then he adds: ‘But then when I landed in Jerusalem, I stopped shaving …’

And this is just as well. The second time I ever met Michael he was again driving the CFA truck dressed as Santa Claus with a genuine long beard, which set him apart from other common Santa’s.

I ask about the concept of voluntary firefighting, which still fascinates me, as a lifetime urbanite, and newcomer to the countryside.

‘The CFA is a key part in any country town in Victoria. It brings people from all walks of life, we have farmers, town people, men, women and in the busy season it’s the sign of the commitment they have to Linton. If there is a bad summer, you could be there day after day after day, sometimes all day and the next day …

‘There are a lot of young people coming now into the brigade, a lot of new members. That’s a good sign because it had struggles in the past, although like all of those organisations they go up and down, you never get it stable, but it’s good, I mean you do it for Linton and you do it for your own house, if there is a big fire you will probably be out there, you won’t be here to look after your own house, you just hope it doesn't come near. So it’s a lot about community sense of giving something to the community, that’s good and healthy.

Community building is evident in Linton. There is choice between retreat into peaceful space and social space.

Michael: ‘Most people I know spend time in the garden here, or [cutting] firewood or community activities. We have got the coffee shop here [Wares, Plants ‘n’ Things Cafe] – well that’s like a little social hub, isn’t it. People meet there, and people go there and the people who are running it – they set it up to do that so everybody feels welcome, when you walk in there, “Oh G’day, how are you ?”’

And you never know how far that welcoming may reach.

Michael: ‘If you come out here with health or mental problems you don’t have the support that you’d get in the city. I think that’s where more work has to be done on these little places.

‘Just as well we have got The Men Shed going, you know, to provide opportunities for people to work on some of these … depression, anxiety, loneliness, marriage problems, drinking – there is a lot of stuff that gets magnified here because you can’t hide it but you don't get help. If you can go around the road to get help it would be different but you have to get in the car and go to Ballarat … you know, you say why bother and that’s a difficulty so put more funding into opportunities for cases like this, for those out there, I think it would be better.

In our conversation, we keep returning to the core idea of country living, and its keyword, ‘community’ and the initiatives that bring people together. Bennita and Michael are well placed to expand on that, with their roles in three organisations, the Food Pantry (Bennita) The Men Shed (Michael, the president, Bennita the Secretary) and the CFA (Michael, Bennita the catering officer).

Michael and Bennita talk about the need to provide individual service to each town and the need to be patient upon opening a new service - wait for it to be discovered and used by the locals.

Michael: ‘In the history of the place there’s always been competition between Linton and Smythesdale, in terms of business competition, football, netball, cricket, you know, they used to belt one another on the football field and even now I know from the fire brigade they get on really well but there is the …’

‘Healthy competition’ Bennita suggests, and Michael observes ‘You can’t bang Linton with anyone else because it is Linton. And Snake Valley is the same – they’re really proud of being Snake Valley – so all these little places … its against human personalities and inclinations to try and amalgamate them into central places, it doesn’t work, just doesn't work they’d rather not go to a place. I know from the church – people wouldn’t go to the church – I am not going over there, thirty-five, fourty-five, fifty, sixty, hundred years ago they did this,’ and here Michael slaps his hands for effect, and we chuckle, Bennita and I. ‘… so it’s inbuilt … you don’t get this so much in the city but certainly in the rural area there is a great sense of pride in identity.

‘I think there is a big change in the town,’ says Michael, and Bennita agrees as they list things that created change and brought the town to life: the café, the pub, the bowling club, the Karaoke night, the yearly November all-town garage sale, and of course, The Men Shed, all the places that bring people together.

Michael: ‘Another spot too is the letterbox, that little shop down there [the takeaway/ post office shop] I noticed there is a regular group of people who get their letters and sit down outside and have a coffee and a chat … I see it, because, you go to fill the fire truck up or you go to get your own mail… those little things are great.’

Here I show off my knowledge of Australian vernacular: ‘A bit like the exchanges that would happen at the Furphy water tank?’

And you can guess the answer, and imagine the spinning of Furphies. The ordinary tales, the grand tales and the yet-to-be told stories that make us who we are - the small-towners, story-makers of Linton.

ACoffee With…

Each month the Linton & District Newsletter will include an article introducing a member of the local

community.

We are seeking one volunteer a month to be interviewed. In return for your contribution to the news-

letter you will each receive a coffee courtesy of Wares, Plants ‘n’ Things Café.

Linton and District Historical Society Inc. Report for September 2017

Mid-Winter break The Society has officially been taking a mid-Winter break in July and August – those cold months when people don’t feel like going out so much. However, we will be back to meetings and Open Days as from September.

Linton Primary School 150th Anniversary The Historical Society is making preparations for the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Linton School No 880 in 1867. We will be open on Saturday 14 October 2-5pm and Sunday 15 October from 11am- 3pm with a display of historic photographs relating to the school.

On Saturday 14th we will conduct a cemetery walk at 3pm, and on Sunday 15th we will conduct a town walk (essentially a walk along Sussex St) pointing out the historic significance of the buildings that are there and those that have disappeared. Everyone - newcomers to town and old Lintonians alike - is welcome to attend these walks and we hope that the whole Linton community will get behind all the anniversary celebrations.

Next Open Day Our next Open Day is on Sunday 10 September, 2-5pm, at the Letty Armstrong Resource Centre in Sussex Street. We will not have an Open Day on Sunday 8 October in view of our being open both days of the 150th weekend.

Annual General Meeting

There has been a change to our guest speaker for our Annual General Meeting on Monday 18 September at 7.30pm in the Shire Offices. It will not be Lorraine Powell speaking on the history of the Ballarat Botanic Gardens as previously advertised.

Our new guest speaker will be Anne Beggs-Sunter, historian and lecturer at Federation University, Ballarat, and her topic will be, “The Conscription Debates of World War One and rural communities”. This topic is timely since it is 100 years since the second referendum on whether Australian men should be conscripted to fight in France during World War One. The result, as in the first referendum in 1916, was ‘No’, but the arguments were passionate on both sides.

At the meeting we will also present the President’s Annual Report, our Financial Report, and hold elections for our Committee of Management for 2017-18. Non-members are very welcome to attend.

Annual General Meeting

From the Past

“THE ARGUS”, 20 OCT 1863:

THE FLOODS AND THE ROADS. – On Saturday, in the Smythesdale and surrounding districts, the creeks had risen to such a height as to render communication between Carngham, Linton and Staffordshire Reef all but impossible. At present we are unable to report what damage has been sustained in consequence … the crossing between Moonlight and Bull Dog is equally dangerous. Mr Blunt of the Victoria Hotel Linton whilst crossing the creek in a spring-cart, was swept away. Had it not been for the prompt and courageous assistance afforded by Mr Parkinson, of the Black Hill Hotel, would undoubtedly have lost his life. Mr Parkinson, on witnessing the occurrence, rushed into the creek up to his armpits, and being provided with a strong rope, after much difficulty, managed to fix it to the vehicle. By this means, and with the aid of three other men Mr Blunt was extricated from his perilous position. Some time elapsed however before the horse could be safely landed.

As I sit down to write this the Men’s Shed is looking forward to our first Women’s Day at the Shed. It is

a part of our desire to ensure the Shed engages with the whole of the community and that we are open to

as many suggestions as we can. We hope this will be the first of many such days. A big thankyou Neil

Park from Imerys for lending a hand. They have been great supporters of the Men’s Shed and we value

their support. And that reminds me…our Shed is open every Wednesday from 11am till 3 in the afternoon

and we love having visitors.

The day falls on the same day as our monthly winter meal, something that we have been running since we

opened. The meal is all about healthy eating but we manage to have not just a good feed but come away

renewed in body and spirit! This has been made possible through the generous support of Beryl Adams

and the team at Smythesdale FoodWorks.

Odds and Ends

Winter is always a difficult time with cold and wind keeping people at home around the fire so it is always

good to see members wander in for a cuppa. David, Ross and Laurie were around this month and they

showed how keeping the Shed open every Wednesday enables men to use it when they can. We have also

had visitors pop in having a look around with a mind to perhaps joining the Shed membership. Our

membership grows through such visitors and by suggestions made by family members and the wider

community.

There are all kinds of projects going at the moment and it is quite impressive to see things unfold. I am

still trying to get a moment when I can start making bird nesting boxes and feeders. A simple starting

point (so I’m told) for a woodworker with ten thumbs!

One thing that truly impressed me was watching one of the members working on a beautifully presented

ornamental box for the ashes of a deceased friend of the Shed. It was an unusual request and took a bit of

thought and planning and the end product was something to be admired and shows the kind of requests

that come our way.

Another of the members has begun to explore making wooden toys for children. It has always impressed

me the way someone can look at a set of plans, tweak them a little bit and produce something any child

would love forever. There are going to be happy children around this Christmas.

We have also been approached to make a new scoreboard for the Linton Bowls club. These are the kinds

of special projects we enjoy because they represent a collaboration with one of the local community

organizations. No one has ever made one before but the end product looks truly professional. The creative

genius behind its creation is also a dab hand at a dozen or so other projects as well. As he constantly

reminds us, we could do with a few more members to help us keep up with the projects.

The Shed has also been very lucky in winning a number of grants. They have enabled us to purchase some

new equipment which in turn helps us produce better products and to take on a wider range of new works.

Grants and donations are crucial for our ongoing growth.

Hi Lintonites (Lintonians?). If you appreciate literature, love reading, theatre, amateur

dramatics or just want to get out of the house and have a laugh please join us at 7pm on

Wednesday evenings at the Shire Offices in Linton (where, you will be pleased to hear,

the heaters work very well). All welcome, no experience necessary.

We promise a variety of scripts and plays to read aloud, along with tea, coffee and chocolate served with a dash of hilarity. We read a diverse range of material from comedies, dramas, ghost stories, crime and period pieces to modern topical fare. In recent weeks we have read the iconic Australian play Dimboola (now that really was hilarious, not a straight face in the house nor a dry eye for tears of laughter) and an adaptation of Neville Shute’s Requiem for a Wren. In March this year we performed a play reading (no remembering lines, you get to hold the book and read from it!) of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Earnest.

We aim to present one public play reading performance per year and after covering costs donate profits to

other local causes, groups and charities. If you don’t think participating in the annual performance is your

thing but like the idea of chocolate and hilarity come along anyway. We appreciate help with costume, set

design, sound, backstage etc. whatever your talent or interest we will find you something to do.

If you would like to know more about the LPG (all associations and innuendos pertaining to gas deliberate)

please call David 0447310565 or Teresa 0407515298 or just turn up. We are about to embark upon a new

murder mystery play, a great week to check out what we do and find out ‘Who Dunnit”.

Note we are a friendly and informal crew; artistic temperaments are left at the door and can be collected

on the way out if still required. Oh, and did I mention the chocolate?

CARNHAM LINTON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB NEWS The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has concluded its 2017 Central Highlands football and netball season.

The home and away season finished on a positive note for Carngham Linton in the senior football, with the Saints defeating Skipton by 63 points at Skipton. The team will now have a break and prepare itself for another strong pre-season, and will look to continue its improving form in 2018.

After finishing the season eighth on the ladder, the under-15 footballers played off in an elimination final against Learmonth at Dunnstown. Unfortunately, the Lakies proved too strong for the Saints to run out 14-point winners.

Congratulations to not only the under-15 football side, but also to all the other players and team staff that represented the club in football and netball during the year.

To conclude the season the Carngham Linton FNC Vote Count and Presentation Day will be held at the Carngham Recreation Reserve on Sunday September 10th, commencing at 11am.

Off the field, there has been much publicity and discussion over the last fortnight in regards to the AFL Goldfields Senior Football Competition Review. A draft report was released recommending that the Carngham Linton Football Netball Club join a new Goldfields District Football Netball League.

Though only in draft form, it is proposed that Carngham Linton join current Central Highlands League clubs Skipton, Rokewood-Corindhap, Smythesdale, Learmonth, Clunes, Creswick and Newlyn, along with Lexton and Trentham from the Maryborough Castlemaine League, to form a new 10-club league.

All clubs in the region are now requested to provide feedback on the draft proposal by mid-September, before a final recommendation is handed down in October or November. Any changes to the league structures are then likely to commence for the 2019 season.

FIREARMS AMNESTY

There is a FIREARM AMNESTY from the 1st of July, 2017. No restitution will be given. It will only

be, to hand over for destruction to a Gun Dealer. The Dealers are REHFISCH in Latrobe Street,

Delacombe and RF SCOTT in Howitt Street, Wendouree. If you have illegal firearms hand them in

now. I can just about guarantee, that after the Amnesty there will be active steps taken to rid all

known firearms from properties that are not accounted for. Expect hefty fines.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT REGISTER

If you live alone and have little contact with others (family or friends) consider going on the

Community Support Register. The register serves a couple of purposes. Volunteers can contact

you during the week to make sure you are ok. The Sergeants office at Ballarat can access records

to obtain next of kin details, local doctor or location of an outside key if for some reason we can

not contact you by phone. It is like an Insurance policy.

If you see something, say something because that small bit of information could fill a gap in an investigation.

Call Crimestoppers on 1300 333 000 or Contact Linton Police Station on 53 447211. You may be diverted to the Bacchus Marsh Police Station where you will be able to talk to another police member or in an

EMERGENCY Dial 000

I can be emailed on the following - [email protected].

A big thank you to club members who helped out during the winter months attending working bees.

finished in 3rd spot on the ladder—well done to all bowlers. The ladies had some strong opposition all year—better luck

next year.

On the social scene the karaoke nights have been very successful with people coming from around the district and be-

yond.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

September 2017

Dear Residents,

Around 60 guests gathered at Smythesdale's Courthouse Hotel in mid-August for a business networking event as part of the Victorian Small Business Festival.

The guests, including many local small business owners, heard from Associate Professor Sam Henson, Head of Campus at Ballarat's Federation University.

Associate Professor Henson spoke about the latest trends in the business environment, and how businesses could grow sustainably and successfully.

A broad range of organisations, businesses, industry and government were represented at the lunch. This event was about celebrating the success of local businesses in Golden Plains Shire.

Council is proud of how many accomplished and well-known businesses can be found in our Shire, and events such as this give us an opportunity to network with local businesses.

Our Shire has a high concentration of small and medium sized business. These include those offering professional services such as engineers, architects and accountants.

Another large business sector is in construction, with many builders and tradies having their businesses registered locally and servicing the wider area including Ballarat and Geelong.

Wineries and cellar door businesses also feature strongly in Golden Plains Shire and attract tourism with their award-winning wines.

Although traditionally Golden Plains has centred on farming and agriculture, this is changing as the population base grows.

This makes it more viable for existing businesses to service local growing centres such as Bannockburn and Smythesdale, as well as our smaller towns.

Our Council supports businesses by facilitating training and networking events; we also work with business owners to access grants from state and federal government.

We're encouraged by the support shown by those attending our events, and are looking to hold more in the future.

Cr Des Phelan Mayor, Golden Plains Shire Council

French Apple Cake

Recipe kindly provided by Julie Eaton

Ingredients:

• 1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 cup)unsalted butter, at room temperature

• 2/3 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling over cake

• 2 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 3 tablespoons dark rum

• 2 sweet baking apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (I like Honeycrisp, Fuji or Golden Delicious)

• Confectioners' sugar (optional), for decorating cake

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180c.

2. Spray a 9-inch springform or regular cake pan with nonstick cooking spray.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.

4. Using a handheld mixer with beaters or a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

5. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well and scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition.

6. Beat in the vanilla and rum. Don't worry if the batter looks grainy.

7. Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until just combined.

8. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the chopped apples.

9. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle evenly with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar.

10.Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the cake is lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

11.Allow the cake to cool until just warm. Run a blunt knife around the edges of the cake and remove the sides of the springform pan if using. Using a fine sieve,

12.Dust with Confectioners' sugar (if using). Cake can be served warm or room temperature, with or without lightly sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

CLASSIFIEDS / NOTICES

House on 20 acres for sale or swap—Looking for property in Linton.

I'm looking to downsize, house, garden and property too big for me now the children are all grown up (almost!) I would be interested in a property swap, private sale, long settlement etc. subject to suiting all involved.

My place is 10 minutes from Linton, address is Scarsdale but actually closer to Smythesdale. It has a HUGE shed with concrete floor, high enough for trucks and machinery, lock up tack room and mezzanine floor and a second big but older shed with dirt floor.

The house is weatherboard, partly renovated, currently set up as 4 bedroom, 4th bedroom is actually a living room with fireplace. Land is divided into 3 paddocks with some bush, a round yard and earth works for an arena done but not completed with sand etc.

I'm looking for less land, 2-5 acres preferably. The right place will be less for me to look after or the potential to make it that way and ideally no more than 5 minutes from Linton. A quite specific brief but prepared to look at properties that don't necessarily tick all the boxes but may have potential to adapt. If the right house would also consider no land.

If interested in buying, swapping or selling please call for a chat, Teresa 0407515298.
