2 Pines & Needles, September 2015

I’ve always loved the fall and the chance to rekindle friendships and start fresh in a new classroom with a full box of crayons (I could be dating myself here). September also inspires a season of gratitude for the bounty of this beautiful region we call home, and the inspiring quilters and volunteers that make up the tapestry of our guild.

Over the past year, I’ve enjoyed the chance to serve on the Guild’s Board as secretary, and have immense respect for outgoing Board members, and those who are continuing to help steer the course for the next year. Led by Claudia Sam-mis, the Board streamlined operational processes and engaged more guild members in committees. Tall shoes to fill.

Thanks to their work, the Board now meets for an hour once a month with specific agendas and clear requests for ac-tion. Working beside them, I’ve made new friends and gleaned keen insights into the meaningful work our guild under-takes.

I’m looking forward to carrying forward the Guild’s vision and goals with the new Board: Judi Brown, First Vice Pres-ident; Colleen Johnson, Treasurer; Bonnie Tomsheck, Secretary; Tina Magill, Communications (interim until position filled); Noreen Nance, Membership; Allison Barrett, Activities; Pamela Read, Programs; Rita Jacques, Quilt Show, and all of the Coordinator Committee Chairs. Please visit our website to see the full list of names under ‘MPQG Business, Board and Committees’ at http://www.mpqg.org/business/board.

We’re still looking for volunteers to fill three open positions: Second Vice President, Communications, and Community Outreach. You can find their duties described on the website at http://www.mpqg.org/business/board and we hope you’ll consider joining in the fun.

We have an exciting line up of speakers this year, and this month we gather to tie charity quilts, with heartfelt thanks to Terann Carr for bringing us all together to give to those in need. At the same meeting, we’ll also share our “treasures” during the September Flea Market – I know I’m going through my stash of fabric and books, how about you? And we head to the Monterey County Fair to see all of the quilts and buy tickets for our raffle quilt – truly this is a season of bounty!

Everywhere I’ve lived and traveled, I’ve found that quilters create welcoming communities that forge strong relation-ships. Over the coming year, I’m looking forward to getting to know more of you as we inspire each other and share our love of fabric and thread.

Cheers, Nora

It is renewal time again. Dues are due by 8/31/15 for the 2015/2016 year. They are $35, the same as last year.

If you are currently receiving the newsletter via USPS, you will continue to do so unless you indicate on the renewal form that you would like to receive the newsletter via email. Membership directories will be available for pickup at the October, November and December meetings. You can also OPT to receive the directory via USPS for an additional $1. Just add it to your membership dues. You can also OPT to NOT receive a hard copy of the directory as it is soooo easy to access through our website, MPQG.org. Indicate that you do not require a hard copy on the renewal form. Dues can be mailed directly to me. My address is on the renewal form. Or you can drop them off at the September guild meeting.

Renewal forms can be accessed on the website, MPQG.org, or at the August meeting. You will be listed in the directory only if I receive your renewal by September 15th.

Passages: Genie SantiniBy Claudia Sammis, [email protected], 831-333-9133

With sadness, we note the passing of long time MPQG member, Genie Santini. Always ener-getic, she served in many guild positions with creativity and enthusiasm. Most recently, she was Fund Raising Coordinator and a member of the Board. At the same time, she handled the monthly mailing of the MPQG newsletter, often with her sister-in-law, over a pot of tea.

Her last quilting projects were for her two toddler grandchildren.

She was active in activities in our area and conscien-tiously kept historical records of the area that had been passed down through her family. For many years, she taught school in Monterey County. Genie leaves her husband, Al, sons Zac and Ben Lazare, and their families

... and her many friends at MPQG.

Genie's daughter-in-law, Heather, wrote a lovely piece about her for the Cedar Street Times www.cedar-streettimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/08-21-15-web.pdf.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Pacific Grove Friends of the Library.

Do you love to learn and make different blocks and share these with your guild? Do you want a chance to win all blocks made by members that month?

We are rekindling the Block of the Month (BOM) program to give you those opportunities. The BOM is for you to learn new skills and share your experiences and to encourage newer quilters to try something new.

GuidelinesLook for the BOM Design Board at the monthly Guild Meeting. Place your block(s) there, and get a chance to win all blocks made. If there are many blocks, we’ll draw a second name.

Stash Busting - You get to use fabrics from your stash. We supply the pattern each month. You pick-up the written pattern at the General Meeting or look for them at www.mpqg.org or in the newsletter.

Win Just the Blocks You Want - Here’s the best part, if you aren’t in love with the block pattern, you can still make it, but don’t put your name in to win them that month.

Points and How It Works - For every one block turned in, you will receive one point. Once you have five points, you can put your name in the drawing pot to win all BOM. When you win the BOM, your points are debited the number of blocks that you won. E.g., If you had 12 credits, and you win 10 blocks, you still have two credits. In addition, you can also ‘pay back’: e.g., you win nine blocks with only your first five credits, you will need to make four blocks in the future to get your balance back to zero.

Then you will need to build up your points to five before you are eligible to put your name in the drawing pot again.

You can turn in up to five blocks per month. Each of them should follow the pattern but be unique.

This may sound kind of strict but but we think this system encourages members to participate and share. And we are going to try to give you fun, some challenging and some easy blocks. And best, we will keep track of your points.

If you have any questions on this program, please see us at the BOM table at the monthly Guild Meetings.

Here is the link for the September 2015 pattern What's In Your Mason Jar? It is also included on the next page.

5 Pines & Needles, September 2015

For September, we are thinking harvest, canning jars, and then back to school. Perhaps you store other things in large Mason Jars? A fun and fast block for stash busting, practicing accurate cutting and sew and flip corners.

Materials Needed for an 8 ½” Block

• Jar: Check your stash for fun fabrics to put in your jar: objects, food, flowers, bugs, fish etc.• One piece needed: 5 ½”x6 ¼”• Background: Use low volume (subtle) prints or tone on tone in a light color. Two 2”x6 ¼”strips, two 2”x3” rectan-

gles, one 1 ¼”x3 ½” strip, two 1 ½” squares (= corners of the jar).• Shelf: Black print One 1 ¼”x8 1/’2 strip• Jar Lid: Use a print or solid to contrast your jar contents: One 1 ¼”x 3½” strip

Instructions

• Sew the corners of the jar using the “snowball” method: • On the wrong side of the 1 ½” background fabric square, draw a diagonal line in the center from corner to

corner. • Place each square right side down in top 2 corners of the jar (right sides of fabrics together as shown in pic

on the right). • Sew on the drawn line, trim corner with ¼” seam, fold back and press in your favorite method. Then, sew

together the lid piece to the background 3½”x1¼” piece on the 3½” side. • Now sew one 2”x3” rectangles on each side of the lid/background piece.

• Sew the 2”x6 ¼” background strips on each side of the jar. • Add lid piece to the top of jar, and black strip shelf to the bottom. • Your block should be 8 ½” square.

Admire your handy work.

Make one or several of these blocks (each should be different, please) and bring to the September 14 meeting to start collecting points to win all BOM made by guild members. five points/blocks will get you to enter your name into the drawing pot. See specific BOM guidelines on how to collect points at: http://www.mpqg.org/activities/block_of_the_month/.

New Exhibits at San Jose Museum of Quilts and TextilesBy Claudia Sammis, [email protected], 831-333-9133

Found/Made

San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles' Upcoming Exhibition opened July 11 and runs through November 1, 2015.

Found/Made is an exploration of exchanges between quilt making and art making. Art and quilts push the boundaries of traditional quiltmaking with repurposed fabrics, unusual materials and innovative techniques.

"These objects were represented in the vestiges of an earlier time. They enthralled and intrigued me, and I was hooked." - Roderick Kiracofe, guest curator

Recycled, Up-Cycled, Re-Purposed Clothing Design: A Slow Fashion Movement FiberSpace

July 11 – September 6, 2015 - Fast fashion, while its economic value is powerful, pollutes the environment with toxic wastes as well as mountains of discarded clothing, and fosters unsafe and unethical manufacturing practices. This exhibit illustrates an alternative to fast fashion. It showcases a collaborative collection of clothing and accessories produced locally by six California artists, using slow fashion methodologies. Come and celebrate the work of designers and artists Darcy Fowkes, Margot Silk Forrest, Destiny Carter, Jill Pillot, Angela Elsey, and Marirose Jelicich, and enjoy their unique creations.

Dear Terann,

I am so sorry that I missed you again! I love seeing you!

Thank you to you and to everyone at the Quilters’ Guild! We so appreciate your thoughtfulness and talents in pro-viding these beautiful quilts for our families. The families themselves see the quilt as a little “extra pampering” in a very stressful time, as well as a lifetime memento!

Please extend a huge thank you from every staff member in the Intermediate Intensive Care Nursery here at CHOMP. Your gifts are appreciated more than you will ever know!

Thank you again, Zosia

It's Grant Time!By Judi Brown, [email protected] 831-595-1478

Request deadline December 1st

From August to the first of December is the time to think seriously about grants for our youth. Do you have a group in elementary, Junior High or High school who could benefit from a guild grant for a fabric related activity? Perhaps a pro-gram in math or art which uses quilting as a class project to learn the concepts. Or a community group such as scouts or 4H or a college program that you are passionate about.

Last year we were able to help seven youth programs with our Christmas Basket Event in December.

This is a wonderful outreach that our guild has participated in for many years.

You’ll find the grant request in the newsletter on page 10. Do help the orga-nization you have in mind by helping them fill in the blanks. The teachers and directors for these organizations are usually so busy that a helping hand to fill out the request is much appreciated.

Thanks! Back Porch FabricsBy Claudia Sammis, [email protected], 831-333-9133

Celebrating 19 years in PG

August was the anniversary month for Back Porch Fabrics of Pacific Grove. Gail Abeloe, the owner, is very generous to the guild in many ways and August was no exception. Gail donat-ed 19 gift packets which were raffled as a fund raiser for MPQG at our August 3th meeting. The winners received a gift certificate, a pattern and a selection of fat quarters to use with the pattern -- nice! Thank you! from all of us.

Tiana Duart Seeks Fair VolunteersBy Claudia Sammis, [email protected], 831-333-9133

The MPQG Halloween Quilt is finished and should attract a lot attention since Halloween is the 2nd favorite holiday after Christmas (says the retail industry).

What do you do? (1) Sit at a table and sell raffle tickets for the MPQG raffle quilt; (2) Chat about the challenge quilts and have guests vote for their favorite; (3) Answer questions about quilting and MPQG; and ... (4) Have fun! Here are the shift times that are available as of 8/4/15.
