A transformation that will significantly improve the lives of Hawaii’s animals is underway. With a new 55-year lease granted by the City & County of Honolulu, the Hawaiian Humane Society’s future in Moiliili is secure and construction on our redesigned campus recently began. The project to improve the health and welfare of animals includes an updated veterinary clinic and admissions center and new adoption pavilions for cats and dogs. “These improvements will have a significant impact on both animal and human experiences at our busy Moiliili campus,” says Pamela Burns, President & CEO.
The project design is the culmination of input from animal sheltering and design experts from across the nation and was guided by what animals see, smell and feel in order to reduce stress, encourage more natural behaviors and ultimately result in more positive outcomes. The goal is
to create comfortable environments that address an animal’s behavioral, psychological and socialization needs.
The new veterinary clinic will expand the existing 160-square foot surgery suite to more than 1,000 square feet, increasing operational efficiency and effectiveness. The Humane Society’s surgery room was originally
designed to accommodate 1,000 sterilizations annually. Currently, veterinarians perform more than 8,000 sterilizations a year in a room
that’s about the size of a walk-in closet.
The design of the admissions center incorporates peaceful areas for animals to relax and adjust to a new environment, reducing stress and illness. The admissions center also includes an exam room so that health evaluations can be performed upon
arrival. Cats arriving for sterilization surgery will have their own dedicated space designed to meet their specific needs.
New indoor-outdoor adoption areas are designed to enable dogs to socialize while providing private spaces for rest. The improved layout will make sanitation more efficient, allowing staff more time to interact with the animals. Cats awaiting adoption will enjoy expanded housing areas with three-story accommodations and vertical spaces for climbing and exploring.
The Humane Society’s doors will remain open throughout the construction. “We anticipate all programs and services to remain fully operational during this time, so please continue to visit us,” says Burns. For more information, visit HawaiianHumane.org.
These dog runs are the
original kennels built in 1942
and will be redesigned to encourage positive
behaviors and increase
happiness.

An animal charity like no otherIn my view, these are the important points that distinguish the Hawaiian Humane Society from other animal organizations near and far.
We’re Local & Independent. We’re a local nonprofit that helps local animals and local people. 100% of your donations stay in Hawaii.
The term “Humane Society” has been incorporated into the names of organizations across the nation. Yet each is separate and unrelated. Most people on Oahu think that we are either a chapter of a national organization or they are unsure if there is an affiliation. About 25 percent think we’re a government agency. Neither is true. That’s why your support matters so much to us. We rely on your donations to fund our mission.
Our History & Experience. We’re the second oldest charity in Hawaii and have been rescuing and protecting animals since 1883. The Hawaiian Humane Society is one of the nation’s oldest humane societies and the only one to have royalty as a founding member—King Kalakaua. Before the Hawaiian Humane Society was established, animal abuse was commonplace; horses were beaten and overworked, dogs were abused and feathers plucked from live chickens. The Society was founded to protect the most vulnerable in our community: animals, orphaned children, unwed mothers and the mentally ill. We transitioned in the 1930s to focus solely on the humane treatment of animals and the human-animal bond.
Our Programs are Comprehensive. We offer more than 30 programs and services that include sheltering, rescue and protection as well as education,
advocacy, prevention and intervention. Keeping the bond between pets and their
people strong prevents homeless animals,
cruelty and abandonment. No other organization in Hawaii rehomes, reunites and rescues as many animals as we do. We stand alone as Oahu’s only open admission shelter that welcomes all animals, no animal is ever turned away.
Our People Are Our Greatest Asset. We have assembled a talented team of 75 compassionate professionals supported by more than 600 volunteers. Our staff members are experts in their fields, including animal care, shelter medicine, finance and community programs. Our experts are leading the animal welfare movement in Hawaii, ensuring that we follow best practices in all areas, use donations wisely and are financially sound and responsible as a nonprofit, mission-driven organization.
Mahalo for all the ways you support the Hawaiian Humane Society. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, October 11 for PetWalk, our annual charity walk to celebrate the human-animal bond and the special relationship we share with animals.

Kaitlin Hao-Magno, who was selected as a Hawaiian Humane Society Pause4Paws student contest winner, is an animal advocate in her school’s neighborhood, helping to manage colonies of street cats through the Cat-Dog-TreeHuggers club at Kamehameha Schools.
“Living in Waianae, I see many animals in need,” said Kaitlin, co-president of the Cat-Dog-TreeHuggers club. “I love that I am able to motivate my fellow classmates to get them involved in activities that can help benefit the community.”
“Peer to peer teaching is one of the most effective tools to increase education and change behaviors,” says Bonnie Oda, Humane Society’s education partnerships manager. “This is how we create social change.”
Kaitlin attended the Humane Society’s Teens4Animals Summer Experience to learn about animal welfare, get hands-on animal training and lead community outreach projects. This further inspired her to help animals. After high school, Kaitlin’s plan is to attend a college in California to earn her Veterinary Technician degree.
“The program at the Hawaiian Humane Society has really helped me believe in myself and shown me that I am capable of doing things if I put my mind to it,” said Kaitlin.

Welcome new board member and officers
Ginny Tiu, newly
elected Chair of the Board of Directors.
Every year for more than a century the Hawaiian Humane Society has been challenged with how to move its mission forward - how to rally more to its cause and improve the welfare of animals that are both owned, homeless, domestic and wild.
From July 2014 to June 2015, the Society made great strides towards building a better future for animals that included the conclusion of a capital campaign and securing a gift of land for a West Oahu campus where services are so desperately needed.
All of these accomplishments are in addition to its work as Oahu’s safety net for animals. In fiscal year 2015, the Society celebrated more than 7,400 adoptions, reunited more than 2,300 missing pets with their owners and sterilized nearly 7,900 animals. The work to rescue, reunite and rehome animals is an enormous undertaking in light of more than 23,000 arrivals. The hands-on animal care work required was supported by more 1,500 volunteers
who stepped in to carry the mission forward alongside 75 staff members. Volunteers also helped expand the Humane Society’s foster program by caring for animals who were too young, injured, ill or in need of socialization before adoption.
“We are a continuously improving organization,” said Humane Society President & CEO Pamela Burns. “We are always looking toward the future needs of animals and making thoughtful decisions to move our mission forward.”
One of the issues that the Humane Society took on last fiscal year was a prohibition on wild animals for entertainment – a timely ambition as the community recognized the 20th anniversary of the escape and shooting of performing
elephant Tyke. It also championed a bill at the legislature that gives restaurant owners the right to allow dogs in their establishments.

Hawaiian Humane Society has launched a three-month campaign to educate the public about the importance of pet identification. Last year, nearly 5,000 people reported having lost their pet or found someone’s animal. While more than 2,300 missing pets were reunited last year by the Humane Society, that number could have been higher if pets had ID. A collar with a tag with a telephone number and a microchip are all it takes.
Microchips never get lost. Get cats or dogs microchipped at the Humane Society for $15, which includes registration in Oahu’s microchip database. No appointment is required. Walk-ins are welcome every day between noon and 4 pm at the Adoptions Center.
Microchips used for pet identification are about the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is injected just under the skin between the shoulder blades and lasts for life. Each microchip contains a unique number that will identify a pet’s owner, if they have kept their information up to
date with the Humane Society. Call 356-2200 to update microchip record contact information today.
Dog license is legal ownership. A City & County of Honolulu dog
license is legal proof of ownership. City & County of Honolulu law requires that all dogs, four months
or older, have and wear a county-issued license tag. A tag can be purchased at any Satellite City Hall or at Hawaiian Humane Society. All updates to dog licenses can be completed at any Satellite City Hall.
The Hawaiian Humane Society is Oahu’s official lost and found. If a pet is lost, be sure to file a lost and found report at the Humane Society or online at HawaiianHumane.org.
Take the “ID Me” quiz and be entered to win a $100 gift certificate. Go to HawaiianHumane.org for more information.

This summer boasted record-breaking heat. While people can cool down with shave ice, a hat and the ability to perspire, dogs are not so lucky. A scorching summer can easily and quickly lead to pet heatstroke, which is dangerous and potentially deadly.
Outdoor activities such as hiking, jogging and playing fetch are amongst the most common causes of heat exhaustion. Signs of overheating include excessive panting, dark or bright red tongue and gums or staggering. If a pet is exhibiting any of these signs, get him to a shady spot as soon as
possible and place cool water on his chest, belly and feet until he can get veterinary care.
Another cause of heatstroke for pets is leaving them in the car. Leaving a pet in a parked car – even for 10 minutes – could prove fatal.
According to a study published in Pediatrics journal, in-car temperatures can reach 123
degrees in one hour on an 80 degree day. Call 911 if a pet is in danger. Take down a license plate number to try and track down the owner if the car is parked at a store.
Help pets beat the Hawaiian heat
The competition was fur-rocious and the votes were flying in this year’s Pets in Paradise calendar contest. The variety of photos made this year’s contest especially adorable: goggle-eyed cats on the beach, dogs exploring waterfalls and even a bird celebrating Christmas. In July, three winners were selected.
Ebby was the first winner, with more than 5,000 votes. “Ebby came all the way from Germany to find her home here in Hawaii,” said her owner, Carol Asai-Sato. “She loves to be with her family, and enjoys daily walks to
the park. She finds the perfect way to enjoy some shade on a beautiful sunny Hawaiian day.”
The next winner, Sweetie, is an adorable green-eyed rescue cat adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society. Some of her favorite activities include spending time snuggling on her favorite recliner with her guardian, Rev. Larry Gardner, who visited The Humane Society’s Cat House every week. This green-eyed beauty loves to eat and meows happily while Rev. Gardner fills her bowl.
Giovanni, who was found abandoned at a beach park as a 2-week-old puppy, also placed in the top 3. His owner, Jasmine Fujiwara, nursed him back to health and into the spunky pup he is today. The 11-month-old terrier mix is a ball of energy that loves to play with both people and animals. Giovanni attends puppy classes at petco and enjoys cuddling with his favorite teddy bear.
More than 100 photos were entered and more than $30,000 was raised for homeless friends at the Hawaiian Humane Society. Visit HawaiianHumane.org to purchase a calendar starting November 1.

Love is ageless: Seniors for Seniors creates new friends
Helpful tips for food safety
All animals that are healthy and friendly can be great companions no matter their age.
The benefits that come with age are many: house trained, an established personality, a fully developed immune system, a longer attention span and easier to train than puppies.
The Epure ohana of Kailua noticed their senior dog Emma had been grieving the loss of their dog Penny, who had recently passed. The family decided to visit the Hawaiian Humane Society to take advantage of the Seniors for Seniors program and adopted 10-year-old Buddy to lift Emma’s spirits and serve as a well-suited companion. They instantly bonded.
“Buddy and Emma do everything together, from going on walks to napping,” said Chikako Epure. “He is very affectionate and proves that love is ageless.”
For furry family members, parties can often mean that temptations abound. A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times more intense than humans and that can make food irresistible. Floral centerpieces and gastronomical delights coupled with your busy schedule can sometimes spell trouble. With a bit of planning and thoughtfulness, pets can have fun and stay safe during any soiree. Turkey, steak and other foods that people love can cause gastrointestinal distress in canine and feline friends and chocolates can be fatal to dogs. It is always a good idea to keep trash closed up tight, and never give your cat or dog food with bones. Well-intentioned owners may want to feed their dogs fatty foods but it can cause a potentially deadly inflammation of the pancreas. Avoid table scraps and large quantities of a new food, as this can cause diarrhea or vomiting.
Common florals found in arrangements, such as baby’s breath and hydrangeas, are toxic to both dogs and cats. Lilies are highly toxic to cats. Call a veterinarian or search online to find a list of plants to avoid. With any get-together, pets may get stressed. To minimize the effects of excitement, close off a quiet room away from the noise. Provide adequate food and water, and a litter box for felines. Some extra attention can go a long way. A gentle massage for the cat or a quiet stroll with the dog may offer some soothing moments for both animals and people.
After beingin our care for 4 months, Buddy, a
spunky10-year-old, found a family to call his own
through the Seniorsfor Seniors program.

The Hawaiian Humane Society’s rescue and response team handles thousands of cases every year where animals are in distress. Sometimes animals are abandoned. At times, animals are lost and can’t find their way home. In other situations, they are victims of cruelty and neglect.
The Society’s humane investigators are able to help so many in need due to their training that includes compassionate professionalism. It’s a skill that is also used by first responders and health care professionals that helps them to succeed in their role as caregivers without becoming personally involved with those they rescue. Yet at times, there’s that one special case that tugs at the heart so persistently, getting personal just can’t be avoided.
In May, Humane Investigator Kevin Nakagami headed to Waianae to investigate a report of animal cruelty. As he approached the property, he found a severely emaciated dog named Nalu chained outside. This wasn’t just a skinny dog. Nalu was so thin he was literally starving to death at 30 pounds, which is half his ideal weight of 65 pounds. The Humane
Society’s veterinary staff later discovered he was infested with ticks causing anemia, missing much of his hair and had sores on his body. He also suffered from heart worms and his skin had blackened.
Officer Nakagami counseled the owner about the care and nutrition that Nalu required to be a healthy and happy pet. After much discussion, the owner realized that Nalu deserved a better life and gave Nalu to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Officer Nakagami found his thoughts kept wandering back to Nalu and that look of hope that filled the dog’s large brown eyes when he was carried away from such suffering. The officer learned that Nalu’s health issues were many and complicated, including deadly heartworms, and that he might not make it through. For several nights, visiting with Nalu in his kennel at the Humane Society became a part of Officer Nakagami’s routine. And with each visit, Nalu
would perk up, wag his tail and lay at Officer Nakagami’s
feet with a look of joy. Nalu had fallen in love with his rescuer and the feelings were mutual.
Officer Nakagami fostered
Nalu for a month to rest and heal. Nalu is now back on his feet, at his ideal weight and enjoys a life he never imagined was possible. Nalu was adopted by his rescuer and the two have formed an unbreakable bond.
