USDA Forest Service, Research Ecologist, Lauren Pile will share past and current research investigating different approaches to natural resource management in an era anthropogenic change. Highlights will include multi-species mortality following drought in California, tree invasion and management in the southeastern US, and novel approaches to forest management. This seminar will take place Friday, September 20 at 12:00 p.m. in PFEN 120. Save the date! FNR Seminar: Thinking outside the box: Natural resource management in an era of increasing complexity

As climatic, biotic, social, and economic influences alter environments and natural resource objectives, land managers increasingly face greater complexity and novel conditions that challenge natural resource management. USDA Forest Service, Research Ecologist, Lauren Pile will share past and current research investigating different approaches to natural resource management in an era anthropogenic change. Highlights will include multi-species mortality following drought in California, tree invasion and management in the southeastern US, and novel approaches to forest management. WHAT’S HAPPENING Land O’Lakes President and CEO to speak at Purdue The Department of Agricultural Economics invites you to join us for “A Conversation with Beth Ford,” TODAY, September 17th from 9:00am to 10:30am in Fowler Hall. During the session we will explore how Land O'Lakes positions itself within the value chain of agriculture to create a more sustainable planet while also maintaining and improving efficiency. Time will be also be set aside for audience questions. The event is free and open to the public. 2019 Agricultural Research Awards Seminar Ian Kaplan is the 2019 Agricultural Research Award recipient. Please join the Department of Entomology for the award presentation and seminar on, “Do generalists triumph in a specialized world? My career as an opportunistic academic,” September 30 at 3:00 in PFEN 241. A reception will follow in Leopold’s Landing.

Leadership Development Certificate Program (LDCP) Call-Out Learn about this certificate program offered by the College of Ag at the call-outs on Tuesday, September 24 & Wednesday, September 25 at 5:30pm in AGAD 128. See more info on the flyer here. The College of Ag Fall 2019 Career Fair is Tuesday, October 1st. The College of Agriculture career fair will take place October 1 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the CREC. Several companies have signed up to attend. Visit the career fair page to see who’s coming. The day before the Career Fair, mark your calendars to attend the CoA Resume Blitz on Monday, September 30, 2019, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, held in AGAD 121 (the Student Commons). Company representatives will be on hand to critique your resume.

USDA Forest Service Presidential Management Fellows Program Unique among Federal agencies, the Forest Service (FS) cultivates future leaders through a comprehensive leadership development program largely run by the future leaders themselves. The FS recruits and hires new talent through the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program. PMFs are welcomed as future leaders and are provided with an extensive network of peers, direct engagement with agency leadership, challenging high-level assignments, and exposure to diverse parts of the Agency. Basic Wildland Firefighter Training S-130 Basic Firefighter, S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior,

L-180 Human Factors on the Fireline, IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command, and IS-700 Introduction to the National Incident Management System

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Purdue University, Forestry and Natural Resources, and Wildfire Management & Training Specialists will jointly host this training. The course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills to perform as a Firefighter Type II on suppression and prescribed fire. An optional Work Capacity Test (WCT) will be administered to individuals desiring to become fire suppression qualified and/or available for National Mobility (Red Card Certification). The instructional sections and field exercises that are incorporated into the course are taught to National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. New CD Version Approved: NWCG has developed a CD/DVD version of the Basic Wildland Firefighter Course. Students will be able to take S-190 “Introduction to Fire Behavior”, S-130 “Wildland Firefighter Training”, and L-180 “Human Factors on the Fireline” utilizing the self-paced CD. Once students have completed each unit of the CD and the associated challenge reviews and complete two (2) short online Incident Command System (ICS) courses they will be able to attend an 8-hour classroom/field module at the Wright Forestry Center. In order to successfully complete this CD version of the course a student must successfully complete all the modules, print a copy of all module completion certificates, bring copies of all certificates to turn in at the classroom/field module on 11/23. NOTE: The CD/DVD version is NOT Macintosh compatible. Target Audience

Department of Natural Resources Personnel – current Departmental policy requires that all personnel participating in prescribed fire and/or suppression fire successfully complete Basic Wildland Firefighter Training. Students desiring to become suppression qualified will be required to complete the Work Capacity Test.

Purdue University Students – students that plan on seeking employment within federal or state natural resource agencies should consider this course. Getting Red Card Certification for wildland firefighting will improve chances for summer and full-time employment. This course is nationally certified and with the successful completion of the WCT will entitle you to be included in the IDNR, Division of Forestry database for potential call up during a fire emergency.

Rural and Volunteer Firefighters – this course develops the knowledge and skills that will aid in the effectiveness and efficiency of fighting wildland fire in the various fuel types in Indiana.

Private individuals working as consultants (foresters or wildlife biologists) or those desiring to become part of the Indiana DNR national mobility response team.

Dates: November 23rd, 2019 (7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Internships are available to current college/university students and recent graduates. Internships are unpaid, but provide numerous non-monetary rewards.
