The Des Moines Playhouse is a pivitol revitalization project in the Roosevelt neighborhood. The BNIM addition gave a new public face to the building, which bolstered its presence and role as a historic cultural arbiter. This project won an AIA Kansas award in 2014. These drawings were part of the submission.

As a LEED Gold building, it was important for me to highlight the energy performance aspects of the project, including both passive and active strategies. Environmental stewardship and occupant comfort were of utmost importance to the designers and client throughout the process.

Above: Particular attention was paid to the south lobby area in terms of occupant comfort. My drawings aim to express the optimization of the exterior louvers, the stormwater management system, and radiant heating and cooling in this pre-function space.
Left: Inside the auditorium, supply air is delivered low in order to increase comfort where the occupants are. This greatly increases the efficiency of the HVAC system. The drawing also illustrates the swiveling chairs on each tier that promote a more collaborative environment.

This project was an in-depth precedent study of a local Iowa barn that resulted in a scale model, a series of section-elevation drawings, and a full-scale structural detail.
The exploded nature of our model allows the viewer to analyze the barn as a kit of parts, which is integral to the discussion of material construction and assembly as it relates to our American agrarian past.
The sides of the model base are constructed from whitewashed original barn wood and the drawings were done using carpenter’s pencils and charcoal. The model itself is made of basswood.

Design inspiration comes from many places and for this project we drew from nature. Particularly, studying and distilling processes nature has perfected as they relate to comfort and survival in extreme environments. The project program is a remote research station in the Arizona Sonoran Desert. Tempering the extreme conditions was paramount, as was striving for self-sufficiency.

Close attention was paid to materials and methods relating to construction and eventually, deconstruction. The rammed earth walls are of the site, and will someday be returned to the site. They also greatly aid in thermal performance. Cut (Loose Fill) = Compacted Walls Formwork = Roof Panels

Peterson Recreation AreaAmes, IA
Building two fishing docks for the Story County Conservation and Parks Dept meant agreeing on certain design aesthetics early on in the process. Our class split into two groups to design and construct each dock off site and then launch the docks on site after setting six foundation piers - in only eight weeks.
I co-led one team and was involved heavily in the design and construction processes. I also was part of the five-man team that set the foundations and launched the docks.
These projects were recently accepted for publication across the state of Iowa as good examples of ‘citizen architecture’. They will also be submitted in the future for various design awards.

I B U I L T A B I K E
My design inspiration comes from many places, including my non-architecture related hobbies. I am continually intrigued by the world of automotive and motorcycle design. Two years ago I re-built this 1978 Honda with the help of my father. The design work was handled by myself, and the custom fabrication and finishing was completed by the two of us.

The majority of my photography is focused on architectural subjects. Now and then I shoot subjects that are not buildings.
All of these images were taken by myself in the past year or so. Some of them were taken as part of an architectural photography class, any editing was done in Adobe Photoshop.

BNIM Architects - Des Moines, IA - July 2014 thru August 2014• Spent six weeks working in various capacities. Most of my work was focused on creating design awards drawings for two projects. One project, including my drawings, won an AIA Kansas award.• Worked on teams developing designs for residential and educational buildings, interiors, and sites.
Video Guidance - Bloomington, MN - June 2011 thru August 2013• Held positions as Operations Assistant, Implementation Technician, and Pre-Sale Designer.• Worked on job sites integrating and testing video conferencing equipment.• Also worked in Customer Service fielding calls and helping customers work through problems with their conferencing equipment.• Built complete models in SketchUp of fully-integrated rooms for customers to view pre-sale.
Mitchell & Associates Construction - Burnsville, MN - January thru April 2011• Worked as part of a construction team to build a 1,200 sq. ft. addition on an existing home.• Experience with a variety of construction tools as well as knowledge of means and methods.• Watched and learned how to plan, manage, and execute the various stages of construction from the foundation to the finishes. Saw firsthand how plans and drawings are realized as built structures.
Leadership
Peer MentorThe past two years I have mentored freshman design students as part of a peer mentor program at Iowa State. This is something that is important to me, after six years in design school I enjoy being able to give back and help younger students the same way I was mentored when I was a freshman.
Teaching AssistantI have been fortunate enough to be a teaching assistant every semester during graduate school. I’ve assisted in various sophomore and junior/senior level architectural theory and history classes, which have allowed me to work with students in a leadership role, and also learn more about the topics.
