INTRODUCING THE

�is series o�ers high quality and engaging literature to conductors of developing musicians, particularly at the middle and high school levels. Because of the relatively late addition of the string orchestra as a performing ensemble, transcriptions and arrangements of works from the classical canon will be a focus of the series so that students can gain experience performing these works in an ensemble setting, though well-crafted original works by contemporary composers are also included. Di�culty is rated from Grade 1–5, ranging from limited position changes to technical expectations typical of beginning collegiate players. Many works include an optional piano accompaniment in order to facilitate rehearsals and to ll out the texture in ensembles that lack balanced sections.

A sophisticated, wide-ranging musical mind is at work here. Several of the movements are ruminations on music history. The Duo opens with an homage to Ravel and ends with an homage to James Brown. The Scherzo of the cello suite is an homage to Copland. The Suite for Viola (Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue and Postlude) refers to Bach’s dance suites for solo strings. The Suite for Violin is full of the sorts of gestures found in the string quartets of Bartók, whose long shadow looms over almost everything on this disc. Though many allusions are highly speci�c and some of the sections are frankly modeled on historical precedents, Hagen is not merely aping or appropriating. He is responding, perhaps in the languages of other composers, but in his own voice and dialect. Three works for strings by noted composer David Conte are featured on this recording. Professor of Composition and Chair of the Composition Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, David Conte serves on the faculty of the European American Musical Alliance in Paris, the board of the American Composers Forum and as Composer in Residence with Cappella SF as well. A graduate of Bowling Green State University and Cornell, Conte studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, where he was one of her last students. He has composed more than 80 works, including six operas and has received commissions and performances of his music from many noted performing ensembles in the United States. In recent years, he has turned his attention to instrumental music and this recording of three of these represent his longest and most ambitious essays in this form. The performances by distinguished new music performers in San Francisco reveal dramatic and lyrical melodies.

Dabke is the string orchestra setting of the third movement of composer Kareem Roustom’s A Voice Exclaiming, originally scored for triple string quartet in a 2013 commission for the Kronos Quartet and Community MusicWorks players. Dabke is an Arab communal folkloric line dance typically performed at joyous occasions. Highly rhythmic and coloristic, the movement is based on a six beat dabke rhythm called sudaasi. Also transcribed by the composer for wind ensemble, the score is dedicated to the memory of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.

Vaughan Williams’ chorale prelude on the 19th-century Welsh hymntune “Rhosymedre” is well known in instrumental settings for organ, orchestra, concert band, and various chamber ensembles and solo instruments. The composer contrasts the steady simplicity of the hymntune, stated in longer values, with an elegant �ligree of countermelodies and contrapuntal voices. While studying at the American Academy in Rome from 1922 to 1925 on the �rst Damrosch Fellowship, Randall Thompson, fascinated with Kenneth Grahame’s delightful 1908 children’s story The Wind in the Willows, wrote two works based on chapters from it. One is a three-movement string quartet written under the in�uence of composers including Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella and the most recent European music he heard in Rome and at International Festivals he attended. Along with his �ve choral Odes of Horace, written at ap-proximately the same time, this work provides us a signi�cant glimpse of Thompson as a composer of chamber music during his formative creative years. Includes score and parts.
