This issue we look back on some highly successful events and occasions that took place during last season, including the Lord Street Celebrates event over the Jubilee weekend and the Olympic World record achieved by Sefton schools. This autumn get ready for a laugh with the Southport Comedy Festival; once again comedians will be taking over the town and venues near you! November brings the 6th Sefton Celebrates Writing Festival - this year we will be taking events right across the borough in preparation for The Atkinson opening in April 2013. The 2012 Sefton Writing Festival will be organised in partnership with Writing on the Wall who

have been organising and promoting writing and literature events in Liverpool since 2000. We are delighted that they will be directing this the 6th week-long celebration of the written word across Sefton. We are also delighted to launch the 2012 Sefton Writing Competition, information on how to take part is inside on page 15. Don’t forget to read the book reviews from Broadhursts of Southport on pages 20 - 21, they have kindly included a reader offer for the titles they have reviewed. Just take your copy into the bookshop on 5-7 Market Street and take advantage of the special offer. This brochure is brought to you by Sefton Arts & Cultural Services. When the Chief Constable of Manchester curtailed the late night licensing of clubs and pubs in Manchester in the late 1960’s, Manchester’s loss in international jazz promotion became Southport’s gain.

From the summer of 1971, The Floral Hall, for a short and, for jazz fans, glorious Southport Indian Summer, staged concerts by the likes of the now legendary Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich Orchestras, The Oscar Peterson Trio and The Modern Jazz Quartet.

After Southport Arts Centre’s T’other Bar’ closed, and the weekly jazz nights at the Hesketh Arms, Churchtown ceased - jazz in Southport was on the decline. ‘Southport Melodic Jazz’ was hatched in 1991 with a gig at Martin Mere. The next ten years saw a gradually increasing frequency and quality of promotions at the Scarisbrick Hotel as we learned the ropes. Kenny Baker, Tommy Whittle and Digby Fairweather were often

heard jamming it with very good local musicians like Vince Newton, Norman Fisk and Norman Bolton. A new era began for Southport Melodic Jazz when we were invited by Tim Timmerman to move to The Royal Clifton Hotel.

After forming a not-for-profit private limited company, electing a board, and setting off to visit every jazz festival and like minded club we could find, to really learn the business and make the contacts with musicians, media and fellow promoters, we started monthly Sunday gigs at The Royal Clifton, and our membership list began.

In 2005 we launched the first ‘Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend’ festival in February and our first ‘sell out’ festival occurred in 2009 and we’ve since carried on that way. Our 9th festival looms in February 2013; and we now promote more than 30 individual 2-hour concerts each year at The Royal Clifton Hotel - attracting visitors from all over the UK and beyond and internationally feted musicians, as well as encouraging young emerging stars and new music. Not bad for a club run by volunteers!

The SMJC has been managed from self-generated funds and has made the Royal Clifton Hotel one of the UK’s top jazz venues outside of London. With this in mind; we look forward with

great excitement to the opening of The Atkinson in April next year. It will be the beginning of a new era in the cultural life of Southport and with Southport well and truly on the UK jazz map, the doors are wide open for more jazz at The Atkinson.

To mark the Olympic Torch Relay heading through the borough on June 1, a total of 5,900 pupils from more than 46 Sefton schools took part in the world’s biggest human Olympic logo formation.

This figure is unconfirmed until being verified by Guinness. The huge group formed the Olympic Rings logo on Crosby beach wearing t-shirts matching the famous yellow, black, red, green and blue hoops which was watched by thousands of people on the Promenade. Pupils had to stand in the formation for more than 10

minutes and the amazing feat is now being verified with Guinness as a new world record. The world record attempt also received extensive media coverage shown across the UK and beyond.

The formation smashed the previous world record set earlier this month in Bath when 2,234 people formed the five Olympic

rings in Royal Victoria Park. The event was organised by Sefton Council and formed the end to a day of celebration as the torch relay travelled through the streets of Sefton watched by thousands of residents and visitors. Leader of Sefton Council, Cllr Peter Dowd, was at the event. He said:

“To watch a world record being broken on Crosby beach was truly amazing.

“Once in formation, it was a spectacular sight with the Antony Gormley statues in the background along with the famous Sefton coastline.

“The world record attempt and the Olympic Torch relay has really

put Sefton on the national map during a time of real celebration across the whole of the country.

“Special thanks goes to all the schools involved and the likes of Merseyrail, Merseyside Police, the RNLI lifeguard service, all the volunteers and our other partner agencies who made this special feat happen.”

The weekend began with local schools performing dance and music to welcome the arrival of the Olympic torch to Southport and although the typical British

summertime weather meant the cancellation of Sunday’s activities, the remaining three days of programming were heavily supported and much appreciated. Performances included Indian Dance, music from Southport Strings, the Mersey Rigger folk band and over 50 voices from a community choir. Arts and crafts workshops for children and adults were run throughout the four days and an exhibition of paintings in support of McMillan Cancer Care proved to be a major attraction.

The Lord Street Celebrates programme was created by Sefton Arts in partnership with Southport Contemporary Arts and a wide range of local community groups and organisations.

A Monster Callsby Patrick NessR.R.P £8.99 Broadhursts price £7.99

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, illustrated by Jim Kay is an extraordinary story about coming to terms with loss. It has been awarded the 2012 Carnegie Medal and the 2012 Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration, the first time in the Awards’ 75 year history that one book has won both prizes. Rachel Levy, Chair of Judges called it - “An exquisite piece

of writing. It is a beautifully economical, structurally brilliant and lyrically descriptive account of a challenging episode in one child’s life.”

Conor, 13, is facing the loss of his mother to cancer - he’s being bullied at school - his grandmother is cold and disapproving - his dreams are nightmares and then: ‘The monster showed up at midnight. As they do.’

It is the monster from his dreams, something ancient, something wild and he wants the truth. This novel will haunt you, it is profoundly sad yet blackly comic and powerfully angry - with exceptional illustrations.

It was inspired by an idea by award- winning author Siobhan Dowd, whose death by cancer prevented her writing it herself. It is highly recommended for adults and children from 12 up.

Literature and writing is a large part of the Sefton Arts programme, and as part of the Sefton Celebrates Writing initiative Formby Books will review two books every issue of SeftON. This issue we offer the children’s

book, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and adult’s novel Jamrach’s Menagerie by Joanne Harris.

We hope that it will encourage people to engage with all forms of literature as the club introduces you to books and authors that you may, or may not, have considered reading.

Formby Books bookshop have kindly agreed to review two books per issue, one children/teenage and one adult. A 20% discount will apply to all books reviewed within the new SeftON magazine (subject to availability).www.formbybooks.co.uk

Alternatively if you would like to review a book and have your review included online at the Sefton Arts website, email us at the above address with your contact details, the book you would like to review and why.

Jaffy decides to join Tim on a 3 year whaling expedition with the ultimate goal of finding and capturing a Kimodo Dragon. What ensues is a dramatic and arduous journey that shakes the bonds of friendship and loyalty.

A riveting read that keeps us gripped Jamrach’s Menagerie is not for the faint hearted. Birch pulls no punches as the ships crew are tossed around an unforgiving sea. A remarkable achievement a must read.
