according to R. B. Brumrted, permit director of theOffice of Marine Mammals and Endangered Species.National Marine Fisheries Service.

Dr. Dale Scwtiindaman, the senior staff veterinarianof the Animal Care staff of the Department of Agri-culture's Veterinary Services, says his agency will gainjurisdiction over all sea lions when the new law goesinto effect, probably about the first of the year. Theagency will also supervise whales, dolphins, sea ottersmanatees and polar bears.

"We would advise them (the Central Park Zoo) notto get them," he said. "This is pretty strong evidencethey willfully violated the act."

Meanwhile, pool keeper Joseph Smimmo, scoffs atthe Federal authorities and notes that the Zoo's re-maining seal, Missie has lived there for 16 years • doesshe look that old, he asks.

the poisoning of JUDY, the Baby African Elephant, part of the PAUL KAYE Hollywood Elephant herd. The elephant became suddenly ill and died, the dayafter Halloween at the Charleston, S.C. Fair whichran Oct. 26 thru Nov. 4th. An autopsy revealed tra-ces of toxic poisoning (believed to be strychnine)and deliberate poisoning is suspected. The other twoelephants did not become ill. In the southeast corner of Indiana, almost into Ken-tucky, is the small city of Evansville, home of the Hadi Shrine Temple, one of the finest Shrine organiza-tions in the country. Each year this Temple and allthe men involved, work very hard to make theirShrine Circus a super-success, and their personaltreatment of performers is without equal - anywhere. If an act comes away from this engagement unhappythen something is wrong with the act. The Shrinerscannot do enough to make everyone comfortable andcontent. For instance, on opening night, a Grand Tur-key Dinner is held at the Temple for everyone on theshow, and on Saturday night, after the 3rd show, abar is set up for a few "unwinding drinks"! And thenon Sunday, between shows, the wives of the Hadi Funsters layout a sensational spread of food. Meanwhile, throughout the run, there are cookies, sandwiches, coffee and-cold drinks, available for all personnelfree of charge. This food is provided by the Funstersthemselves. It seems a bit unfair to single out just afew for public tribute; however, there are so manyinvolved it is impossible to name them all in such abhef space. So here's a big Thank You from all of usto the entire Shrine Committee m general, and in particular to Or. William Standrmg (Acts' Chairman) andhis assistant Joe Vezzoso, and to Harvey Johnson(Aremc Chairman) and his assistant Wayne Howard, plus a very special thanks to the Funsters and thenwives.

JOHN H. McCONNELL, who is writing a book onthe Hannefords, to be published sometime next sum-mer, became interested in his subject through his fas-cination for the late KAY F RANCIS whose death up-set the writer very much. It was her death, actually, that was the initial motivation for his book which willspan seven generations of Hannefords dating to the1700's. George DaDeppo is doing the art work. Wewish Mr. McConnell well with his project.

MAGIC ODYSSEYby "Circus Joe" Valenciano

This year in exciting new Magic-Illusion Show hasentered the scene. The production is entitled "MagicOdyssey". The show is headed up by Alexandra &Sebastian Adrian!. It is a unique kind of magical re-vue, combining Magic, Razzle Dazzle Musical-Discowith plenty of flash and beautiful wardrobe. Theperformers are all smiles and friendly which adds tothe enjoyment of the show.

The show carries its own four piece musical group, consisting of two guitars, keyboards and a drummer. With all their speakers, amps and equipment set upin the background, plus a colorful arrangement oflighting, it appears to be a really modem up-to-dateshow.

The troupe does all sorts of magic with the Discobeat. They do several illusions, including sawing amember of the audience in half. This must be athriller, especially for the participant.

They do about two 45 minute shows at each date, with each one being different. A special feature ofthe show is "Alexandra The Great & Co." the firstlady illusionist, assisted by two smooth "disco"dancing young men, Dana Zomes and Arthur Sto-

HAROLD DUNN's miniature circus was featured atthe Ringling Museum and was the subject of an articlein the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on Nov. 26th.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cul-tural Organization recently adopted a "Universal De-claration of the Rights of Animals."

The UNESCO's declaration starts with a remark fromthe Jefferson assertion that "all animals are bom withan equal claim on life and the same rights to exist-ence."

It then continues by defining the duty that thoserights imply. For example, "No animal shall be ex-ploited for the amusement of man" and "scenesof violence involving animals shall be banned fromthe cinema and television."

The decoration overlooks the fact that most animalswhich suffer premature death are eaten by peoplefor food. But it does say that "any act involving masskilling of wild animals is genocide."

Christmas is just around the corner and we here inCalifornia are trying to brush away the dark andgloomy clouds that have hung overhead for the pastseveral weeks. There's a feeling of sadness that justwon't go away and so the holidays are going to bepretty quiet.

We wonder how many more things can happen todefy the imagination. This is sure the wild and woo-ly west, where television's fiction takes a back seatto the real, every day events.

People everywhere must think we Californian'shave gone completely mad. It's not really true. Wehave a few strange people among us, but for themost part the people are good and kind • the typeyou'd want to have living next door.

Before the ink on the headlines about Guyana

and the People's Temple had set, San Francisco'sMayor and a Supervisor were shot. What must theworld think of us now?

Just the other day someone said with all this tra-gedy the world must be coming to an end. It mightbe, but we hope not.

People tend to shape their own destiny, but hereof late it seems obvious they are doing a very badjob of it. Maybe in time things will improve.

The shock of it all is beyond explanation. Some912 people are dead because someone persuadedthem to drink cyanide. A mayor and a supervisorare dead, apparently because one of their fellowmembers couldn't have his own way. Life seems tomean very little and that thin line between sanityand insanity becomes thinner - it's scary.

We have certainly strayed far, far away from theteachings of Jesus and his words "love thy neigh-bor."

Let's hope this Christmas will bring us back tolife as it should be lived, where all men are bro-thers. Where once again we can walk about un-afraid and live in peace and harmony.

Merry Christmas everyone I

HUSTON'S HALLUCINATIONSby Tom Currier

After far too long a time, Roy Huston has returnedwith his full evening illusion show to the stage. "Hustem's Hallucinations" bowed in 1965, one of thefirst big illusion shows to emerge since the dissolu-tion of the railroad illusion shows of the past. "Hu-ston's Hallucinations" played Rapid City (Nov 18)under the sponsorship of the National Federationof the Blind and Mt. Holly Productions. Dates inSioux Falls, and Aberdeen followed. The show runs about two hours and has two varietyspots, rola-bola and juggling, both handled expertlyby Pat and Gwen Oavison. the rest of the show isjammed with illusions • 14 in all, all unusual in ap-pearance and orginal in presentation. The show's opening builds from flower productionsto a duck production and vanish, and climaxeswith Huston's now-famous drum illusion. From alarge steel drum, he produces first 200 feet of silkstreamers, then a girl-clown. The curtain that open-ed to a nearly bare stage closes on a spectacular, colorful disarray. After this strong beginning, nothing can stop Hus-ton. He does a comic-Egyptian "Girl Without A

Middle," the ever popular "Temple of Benares" and"The Lightbulbs through the Girl." Then he intro-duces the rola-bola spots, invites audience partici-pation in the "Headchopper" and closes with theclassic "Sawing-in-Half."As a performer, Huston posseses considerable show-manship and grace. He knows how to pace his pre-sentation so as to squeeze the maximum effect fromit. Furthermore, he is aided and abetted by a strongmusical force - Richard A. Rosio at the organ andFred Blacksmith on drums. Mr. Rosio plays power-fully; he has a very full sound and an almost uncan-ny ability to pick up cues.Alter a ten minute intermission, the curtains openon two devil girls, complete with capes and horns, who produce Huston from a mummy case. Thesedevils assist him in his spirit cabinet effect and inthe "cremation", during which he bums up one ofhis devils with soaring flames.Pat Oavison does his juggling turn - a real crowdpleaser - and the show closes with the aerial vanishand terrestrial re-appearance of Huston's main fe-male assistant, Susan Hussey. When I went backstage to congratulate Huston, Iwas amazed by the multitude of red crates - 40 ofthem • all numbered and named. The show fits in-to a one ton truck and a pick-up, both loaded tocapacity. While the substance of the show was impeccablyorganized and presented, there are some flaws. Thelight cues were occasionally slow, and at one pointthe spotlight shone on the bare stage floor. Thesame is true of the curtain cues - Huston uses tra-vellers after each illusion, and the stagehands weretoo often slow in re-opening it. These rough spotscould be smoothed out by the addition of a full-time stage and lighting director."Huston's Hallucinations" could be one of the

.strongest of the illusion-show line-ups on the roadtoday.
