www.seandorseydance.comA MESSAGE FROM SEAN DORSEY

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s performance. Tonight marks the North Carolina premiere of The Missing Generation as we continue our 20-city tour; it also marks the first time a transgender contemporary dance artist has been presented at ADF’s season! The Missing Generation gives voice to longtime survivors of the early AIDS epidemic; it is a love letter to a forgotten generation of survivors – those who witnessed and experienced the loss of part of an entire generation of gay/bi and transgender people to AIDS in the 1980s and 1990s. Our culture has largely turned its back on this generation of survivors. I want us to turn and look at you now.I devoted 2 years to this project – a full year building the score by recording interviews with transgender and queer longtime survivors of the early epidemic,

Page 4: SEAN DORSEY DANCE - a · PDF filePatricia Jones, Gert McMullin, Jimmy Mack, Evelyn Martinez, Joseth Minor, Tyra A. Ross, Sage Rivera, Sarah Schulman, Ron Swanda and those who chose

and then another year in the studio working with my dancers and composers. What you will hear tonight are actual excerpts of these interviews: real voices telling their real-life stories. My deepest gratitude to all of the people I interviewed ... I extend this deep gratitude to all the survivors who shared their lives and stories with me through this project: your lives, your activism, and your love made OUR lives today possible. THIS PROJECT WAS IMMENSE – over the course of 2 years I:- recorded 25 oral history interviews in 6 cities across the US- listened through these 75 hours of oral history interviews (and transcripts) in order to write and edit a soundscore based on these interviews and my own writing- worked with a team of 4 composers to create original music for each section- spent over 500 hours writing, editing, and drafting the soundscore- worked for 100 hours in the sound recording studio to record the final soundscore. There is an urgency to doing this project now: during my lifetime, we will see the passing of the last survivors who experienced the early AIDS epidemic first-hand. We must capture and share and preserve these stories and histories before they are lost forever. As a transperson, I am also passionate about documenting and sharing transgender experiences of early AIDS: despite being decimated by the early epidemic, transwomen have been all but forgotten in most AIDS histories and narratives. After the show, please stay and talk with us – this show is an invitation to connect and grieve and heal and hold each other. Thank you for coming! -- Sean Dorsey

EMILY PAULSON (Technical Director / Stage Manager) is a Stage Manager and Stagehand with IATSE Local 107. She is blessed to work with Sean Dorsey Dance and the Fresh Meat Family since 2012. As Stage Manager and Technical Director her goal is to create a supported, safe, consistent, and loving atmosphere for the dancers, so that they can experience and transmit the dance to the audience. Bringing Sean's and all of the collaborators' visions to life across the country has been an educational adventure and a mind-blowing experience. It is an honor to bring this important piece to the people and to have a part in sharing American history. The added bonus of touring with such talented, diverse and lovely friends feeds Emily's soul. Thank you to Sean and Shawna, and all of the dancers for all that you do!
