Wonderful Indonesia

The Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world comprising 13,466 large and small tropical islands fringed with white sandy beaches, many still uninhabited and a number even still unnamed. Straddling the equator, situated between the continents of Asia and Australia and between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, it is as wide as the United States from San Francisco to New York, equaling the distance between London and Moscow. Indonesia has a total population of more than 215 million people from more than 200 ethnic groups. The national language is Bahasa Indonesia.

Among the most well-known islands are Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan (formerly Borneo), Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), the Maluku Islands (or better known as Moluccas, the original Spice Islands) and Papua. Then, there is Bali “the world's best island resort” with its enchanting culture, beaches, dynamic dances and music. But Indonesia still has many unexplored islands with grand mountain views, green rainforests to trek through, rolling waves to surf and deep blue pristine seas to dive in where one can swim with dugongs, dolphins and large manta rays.

Because of its location and geology, Indonesia is blessed with the most diverse landscape, from fertile rice lands in Java and Bali to the luxuriant rainforests in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, from the savannah grasslands in Nusa Tenggara islands to snow-capped peaks in West Papua.

Indonesia’s wildlife ranges including the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard, Orangutan, Java rhino, Sulawesi Anoa, and birds with exquisite plumage like the cockatoo and the bird of paradise. This country is also the habitat of the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, wild orchids, amazing variety of spices, aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit trees. Underwater, scientists have found in North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth fish, a “living fossil” fish, predating the dinosaurs living some 400 million years ago, while whales migrate yearly through these waters from the South Pole. Here are hundreds of species of colorful coral and tropical fish to admire.

Culturally, Indonesia fascinates with its rich diversity of ancient temples, music, ranging from the traditional to modern pop, dances, rituals and ways of life, changing from island to island, from region to region. Yet everywhere the visitor feels welcomed with that warm, gracious innate friendliness of the Indonesian people that is not easily forgotten.

General Information

Time Zone

Indonesia has three time-zones—Western Indonesia Time which is GMT +7 (covering Sumatra, Java, Madura, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan), Central Indonesia Time which is GMT +8 (covering East and South Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara) and the last is Eastern Indonesia Time which is GMT +9 (covering Maluku and Irian Jaya). The capital Jakarta is GMT + 7 or 16 hours ahead of US Pacific Standard Time.

Banking Hours

Standard banking hours are from 8 AM to 3 PM from Monday to Friday. However, several banks open their branches in hotels (and some in malls) longer than office hour; a few are open on Saturdays so you might want to check first. Jakarta has several international banks, even though you can also exchange currencies in some hotel cashiers and official money changers.

Currency

The Indonesia Rupiah is also called IDR. Information of daily exchange rate can be found in newspapers or from the net. Some Indonesia banks provide this on their websites. IDR and US$ are the most acceptable currencies. Most tourism resorts have money changer facilities. When you are traveling to remote areas it is advisable to exchange your money and clear your check. Credit cards are only acceptable in big hotels, restaurants, shops and traveling agencies.

Electricity

Electric power supply is 220 volts in all regions. So be careful with your 110-volt electronic equipment. The sockets will only fit with two pins rounded-tip plugs (technically known as Type C, E, and F) or use adaptors. Most hotels and many restaurants in large cities provide internet connections or free Wi-Fi.

The National Monument or simply Monas is a 433 ft (132 meter) tower in the centre of Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta, symbolizing the fight for Indonesia. Monas is the official national monument of the Republic of Indonesia, built to commemorate the struggle for Indonesian independence. The construction began in 1961 under the direction of President Soekarno.

Once satisfied with observing the relief you can get to the base of the monument which is at 3 meters below ground level. At the base of the monument, there is the National History Museum which contains 51 dioramas showing the history of Indonesia since the days of pre-history to the New Order regime. The top of the monument we can see a panoramic view of Jakarta; we can use binoculars for a closer look. From the top of the Monas, visitors can enjoy spectacular views across the city.

Jakarta Old Town

Jakarta Old Town a.k.a Old Batavia, or locally referred to as “Kota Tua Jakarta”, was the downtown area of the capital long time ago. The Old Town of Jakarta still has exactly the same town planning as the town VOC built in 1650. Kota Tua

Bogor Botanical Garden is located in Bogor city and spread about 87 hectares with the impressive out-of-town Bogor Presidential Palace fronting it and soaring Mt. Salak at its background and boasts over 400 species of palm trees, 5,000 trees gathered from around the tropical world, and an orchid house containing 3,000 varieties. Records show that the Bogor Botanical Gardens harbors 3,504 plant species, 1,273 genus in 199 families.

The Gardens are said to have been initiated by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who 1811-1816 became Governor General of the East Indies during the interim reign of the British over the archipelago. With the help of botanists from London’s famed Kew Gardens, Raffles first laid out a small garden. However, the Gardens were officially established by the Dutch in 1817 under the directorship of CGC Reinhardt. A memorial to Raffles’ wife still stands in the Gardens. The Bogor Gardens today function as an ex situ conservation site, a research center for taxonomy and plant utilization. In horticulture the Gardens study adaptation, planting and propagation of plants and develop the science of plant growing.

The Gardens are open daily to visitors. There are paved walkways for visitors to stroll at leisure to admire the variety of old, gnarled trees, walk under the canopy of their foliage and listen to the river rushing over large boulders. On Sundays and public holidays, the Gardens are usually very crowded.
