Sea Breeze • If you were at the beach and you felt a drop in the

temperature that would be a sea breeze. This occurs when a cool breeze blows off of the water.

• This usually occurs on warm, sunny days usually in the spring time or in the summer, when the temperature of the land is higher than the temperature of the water.

Sea Breeze• The suns energy begins to warm the land faster

than the water.• Later in the day, the temperature of the land

increases while the temperature of the water remains the same temperature.

Sea Breeze • The cold air from the sea meets the warm air from

the land and it creates a shallow cold front.• It also creates cumulus clouds and if the air is

unstable and humid, then it will create cumulonimbus clouds.

Land Breeze • Land Breeze is a type of wind that blows from the

land to the ocean. Sometimes there is a temperature difference between the land surface and the ocean, and the winds will move offshore.

• Land Breeze usually occurs at night. During the day the sun will heat the land. At night the water will retain more of its heat than the land.

• Water has a high heat capacity.

Land Breeze • A night the temperature of the land cools without

the insolation from the sun. Heat is rapidly radiated back into the air surrounding it. The water along the shore will be warmer than the land creating the movement of air.

• The movement of the win is from the differences in air pressure over the land and the ocean.

• Warm are is less dense and it rises. Cool air is more dense and sinks.

Land Breeze • As the temperature of the land cools, the warm air

rises and makes a small area of high pressure near the land.
