Shot 1

The extreme close up shot, gives a sense of mystery and creates an enigma to the audience as they are left to wonder what the importance of the book is and why it is being used.

The way in which the font appears to be shaking, gives the illusion of instability, something that is old and broken, leaving the audience unsure of the events that lie ahead.

The colour pallet within the shot is that of a sepia tone, giving it a warm yet drab effect, indicating to the audience from the start that this is a thriller.

Shot 2

The hands suggest the gruesome nature of the film, the audience then get an idea on how dreadful the events are that lie ahead.

The lighting within this shot highlights the sinister and grotesque hands portrayed on the screen.

Once again, there is the use of the shaky font, with the inevitable sense that something within the film is unsure. In this case, the knowing of who is the cold blooded murderer.

The title of the film is bold and large, however changes shape to keep the audience engaged.

There is a ghost like shadow within the background of the shot, indicate the connotations of ghosts in which relate to the murders in the film. This giving the opening an eerie sense of mystery.

The number ‘7’ replacing the letter ‘V’ not only represents the title of the film ‘Seven’, but also the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ in which is the main driving force behind the film as this is how the murderer kills each of his victims according to each deadly sin.

Shot 4Within this shot, the audience is left to wonder who it is crossing out the words from what appears to be a newspaper cut out, and why it is they are crossing out these particular words. They are left to consider what significance this will have within the film.

The dark, sinister theme continues throughout this shot, as once again there is an obvious sense of mystery, due to the dark shadow on part of the shot.

The audience instinctively will think about what the implications of this particular newspaper article will be and what relevance this will have as the film progresses.

The close up shot once again creates an enigma to the audience as it is yet unknown to them what these pictures are and why they are being cut up.

The lighting within the shot highlights what could be a crucial part to the film. The audience is left to once again feel a sense of mystery within this shot.

Within this shot there is what appears to be a male hand writing down something in which the audience is left to wonder it is that is being written down and who it is who is writing it. Could it be the protagonist itself or an investigator?

Once again, there is a ghost like shadow as the character progresses to write. This is seen throughout the opening, indicating the connotations of a ghost, following the sense of mystery in which is seen throughout.

The sepia tone is continued throughout the opening, continuing the dull effect that indicates to the audience that it is a thriller.

The shadow seen behind the page is the clear focus of this particular shot, giving the audience a sense of the unknown as to whose hand this may be and what it is they may be writing and most importantly, what significance this will have as the thriller progresses.

The lighting in this shot is particularly important as this is what gives the focus on the mysterious hand, highlighting it to the audience. This shot is also the brightest shot, which is evidently unconventional of the opening as the sinister hand is what conveys the mystery in this shot rather than the color pallet or lighting.

The lighting in this shot is particularly interesting as the entire shot is black apart from the spotlight in which indicates a mysterious face being crossed out with a marker pen.

The lighting could have been used in such a way to convey the dark mysteriousness of this particular shot and the thriller overall.

This particular shot only appears briefly within the opening, suggesting the mystery and secrecy behind this hand-written shot.

The audience are left to wonder what this piece of writing signifies and what the word itself means and what this has to do with the thriller itself.

The hand-writing is noticeably messy therefore this could indicate the anxiety and worry behind the person who wrote it, leaving us to suspect the protagonist himself.
