H O W W E T E S T — A N D W H Y ScubaLab is the gear-testing arm of Scuba Diving magazine, and the only product-testing agency that exists solely to serve recreational divers. ScubaLab conducts impartial evaluations of dive gear using both objective test measures of performance and in-water ergonomic evaluation by test divers. We test so divers can have specifc, impartial and detailed factual information when they’re buying dive gear.

TEST PROTOCOLS

Our methods of testing depend on the type of gear we’re evaluating. For critical gear such as regulators, BCs and computers, we conduct our most detailed evaluations consisting of two parts: an objective test and an ergonomic test.

OBJECTIVE TESTING

The objective test is designed to capture measurable performance data with repeatable results. For example, we put regulators on

the ANSTI breathing machine at Dive Lab, a commercial testing facility in Florida, where they are run through a series of carefully con-trolled dive simulations that measure the efort required to move precisely metered volumes of gas at increasing depths and breathing rates.

We test dive computers at the USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, where they are run together through a series of four simulations designed to replicate a full day of diving, while we record no-decompression limits and other data to compare how relatively liberal or conservative their algorithms are. BCs are subjected to in-water tests including fow-rate control, where we determine whether the BC’s valves can dump air fast enough to keep up with a power infator that’s stuck open.

ERGONOMIC TESTING

Ergonomic tests are conducted by teams of test divers who use slates and waterproof test sheets during the test dive to assign numeric scores for a series of specifc evaluation points designed to gauge the comfort, performance and prac-ticality of the gear. For example, when we test regulators, divers provide written comments and scores in more than a dozen categories, including ease and dryness of breathing in nor-mal head-down and face-up positions, bubble interference and breathing-knob adjustment.

AWARDS

ScubaLab Testers’ Choice awards are selected based on top numeric scores in each category tested. Best Buy designations also may be made at ScubaLab’s discretion based on a combination of performance and price.

While test procedures necessarily vary greatly from one type of gear to another, the aim of all ScubaLab tests — whether regula-tors, masks or snorkels — is to evaluate gear in a way that provides readers with unbiased, factual and useful information about gear so they can make informed purchasing decisions. For each test, we also describe in detail how it was conducted, and the specifc objective and ergonomic points that were scored.

Out of the BoxWith fi ns, there’s a lot to consider before you buy. Here are some things to keep in mind.

FULL-FOOTS VS.

OPEN-HEELS

Full-foot fi ns are

much lighter than

comparable open-heel

fi ns. They also create

less drag because

there aren’t any

dangling straps. They

tend to have shorter,

more-fl exible blades,

making them easier to

kick underwater.

Because full-foots are

designed to slip over

a bare foot, you don’t

have to wear a spongy

neoprene bootie.

This enables the foot

pocket to grip the foot

fi rmly and completely,

allowing for more-

effi cient transfer of

energy from foot to

fi n blade.

Getting a perfect

fi t in a full-foot fi n is

critical because the

foot pocket can’t be

adjusted. If it’s too

small, the foot pocket

will crush your toes;

too large, and it will

fl y off your foot when

you kick.

Finally, because you

aren’t wearing booties,

your feet have no

protection with a full-

foot fi n. This can cause

problems when you

remove the fi n to climb

a boat ladder or trek

across a rocky beach.

While exceptions are

numerous, in warm-

water destinations

— where divers wear

less gear — full-foot

fi ns tend to be popular;

in cold-water locales,

open-heel fi ns

are preferred.

SPLITS VS. PADDLES

Split fi ns slice through

the water with minimal

resistance, because

rather than pushing

against the water

with brute force, their

fl exible blades —

when engaged in an

up-tempo fl utter kick

— actually generate

lift along with a jet-

propulsion effect,

similar to a boat’s

propeller. The faster

the propeller turns, the

more propulsion is

generated. In other

words, with split fi ns,

power comes from the

speed of a diver’s kick

rather than the force

of the kick. However,

due to the principles

of the design, the best

kick for a split fi n is a

narrow, rapid-fl utter

kick. Not all divers

like to employ this

kind of kicking action.

For them, a paddle

fi n is probably the

better choice.

Traditional paddle

fi ns tend to have stiff

blades that require

more leg muscle to get

them moving, and are

designed for divers who

want lots of feedback

from their kick.

How to Care for

Your Wetsuit

After a day of diving, try to

avoid putting

your wetsuit in

the sun or in the

trunk of a hot

car. And never

wash in a wash-

ing machine.

Instead, soak

your wetsuit in

a tub of cold

or lukewarm

fresh water

(hot water can

cause the suit

to lose some

fl exibility) with a

mild solution of

baking soda or

wetsuit sham-

poo (never use

bleach). Give it

an occasional

agitating swish

like the motion

of a washing

machine. Soak

for about

30 minutes, and

then turn the

suit inside out

and let soak for

an additional

30 minutes.

During the soak, scrub

zippers and

Velcro patches

with a tooth-

brush. Work the

zipper car up

and down the

track to break

loose any dirt.

Pull the wet-suit from the

tub and give it a

thorough rinse

with a hose,

inside and out.

Inspect for tears, espe-

cially along the

seams. If nec-

essary, resew

the nylon with

heavy polyester

thread or repair

the neoprene

with wetsuit

cement. Check

the zipper for

broken teeth.

Turn the wet-suit inside out,

and then hang it

on a fat hanger

(standard nar-

row hangers

will crease the

shoulders) out

of direct sun-

light. When dry,

turn it right-side

out and repeat.

Once completely dry, lubricate

the zippers and

store back on

the fat hanger,

or fold it loosely

on its own shelf,

preferably with

some crumpled

newspaper or

old T-shirts

stuffed inside

to give it some

form. Make

sure not to lay

heavy gear on

top, because

that will create

dents or crush

the neoprene.

Camera Housing

➜ MAINTE-

housing starts

before you go

diving. At the

start of a trip,

remove the

sealing O-ring

from its groove,

and apply a

small amount

of the supplied

O-ring grease.

➜ IT’S

IMPORTANT

TO CHECK the

O-ring for any

debris that

might interfere

with creating

a seal. Do this

while applying

a light coating

of grease to

the O-ring, and

every time you

open and close

your housing.

➜ KEEP YOUR

of the sun to

prevent camera

fogging. The

best sunscreen

is a damp towel

— if you’re out

in the hot sun,

just place the

towel over your

keep a couple

of desiccants in
