T he M ath C orner Probably the most common question that students ask themselves during math classis When am I ever going to need to know this in real life?Perhaps you dont need advanced calculus to calculate how much you need to payfor your groceries, but simple math will always come in handy ineveryday life.

A lot of people lack a mathematical interest and bang their heads against the wallwhen asked to nd x. However, math is a great tool to use in everyday life.

Math really is all around us: paying your bills, nding the best electricity company, going grocery shopping and nding the most affordable product are just a few ex-amples of when simple math is needed in everyday life.

As Jack Black brilliantly says inSchool of Rock, Math is a wonderful thing. Mathis a really cool thing. Even if you nd math incredibly useless and boring, both inside and outside of school, you can always use youmathematical knowledge to solve math puzzles!

Riddle:Three friends went to buy a clock and they contributed $20 each for the $60 clockLater, the shopkeeper discovered that it was only $50 and sent a servant to return t$10. The servant was unable to divide 10 among the 3, so he kept $4 for himselfgave them each $2.

    Now each friends expenditure is $18 only (18*3=54 ). The friends spent $54 and $are with the servant.Total = 54+4 = 58.Where did the $2 go?

Why did the DP2s choose IB? What memories are they taking with them whenthey leave IB? How did the programme changed them as

individuals? Would they would recomend it to other students?Read on to fnd out!

by Faduma Abdi & Van Mai Phuong

I chose IB because Mrs Ahlmn and Mrs Ahlmstrm came tomy school one day and spoke about the programme. I wasinterested and my parents encouraged me to apply.

What I remember the most about the IB is one of the rst daysof PreDP when we went to Edsbergs Manor just to bond. Irealised how different the IB would be compared to thenational programme and I decided that it was worth thestruggle.

IB has allowed me to pursue my interests, allowed me to believe in myself and allowed me to stand up for myself. It haschanged me into a more compassionate, caring and, honestly, clever human being.

The IB has been such a struggle and I have been pulling myhair and screaming, but I do not regret a single moment of it. Iwould not only recommend the IB, but I would make as many people as possible apply just because the it is worth it.

I chose IB because I wanted to continue to study in Englishand the IB seemed, at the time, like the best option!

What I remember about IB are stress, fear and panic.

IB has allowed me to become more aware of everything, especially global issues and politics. Also, I have become moreopen-minded and less intimidated about giving presentations before an audience.

I would recomend IB to those who understand it and whoaccept it for what it is.

I chose the IB because I have always liked English a lotand I wanted to study abroad after high school. I alsowanted a rather broad education, which IB has given me. An experience that is not study related that I rememberwas when we went to Siar with the year ahead of ourclass. Other than that, I de nitely remember the processof the EE: dif cult as hell, but very satisfying in the end!

I think I have another way of looking at things now. I tryto see more than what is on the surface, which Ivealways had a problem with. I think it is easier to seethings from other perspectives now.

I would recommend IB to those who are dedicated and

hard working. If you are a slacker, IB will be almostunbearable, but if you want a thorough education andwant to develop as a person then apply for IB.

Yet, what better opportunity to do something unusual when you are free and have thetime? What about taking some dancing lessons? How about learning to play a musicalinstrument? Think about the excitement and adrenaline rush that comes with the feelingof accomplishing something that you did not know you could do. Travelling, camping, skydiving and sur ng are just a few of the adventures available for the daring person.

If you have no plans for the summer holidays, consider the time as an opportunity to dosome CAS. Doing CAS during the summer not only gives you the chance to try out newand wonderful adventures, but you can master a new skill or discover a new hobby.
